Kirby's Epic Yarn Coming To A Wii Near You

Smack dudes with your yarn.

Even Nintendo is getting into the reboot game. But as you'll notice, Kirby Epic Yarn won't require the blessing or consultation of a Tier-1 Operator.

Nintendo has announced a new Kirby title slated for release this Fall, and as you may have gathered from the name, it sports an interesting twist for the Kirby series both visually and functionally.

The game's world is composed of vibrant pieces of cloth and textured fabrics that are stitched together by colorful yarns and threads. But this playful presentation is as charming as it is utilitarian. In the brief E3 demo shown during Nintendo's press conference, we observed Kirby pulling pieces of yarn embedded in the environment in order to reveal a secret passageway. Kirby will also be able to use his own pink yarn to shape shift into a car, a submarine, a blimp, and even a UFO.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is a Wii-exclusive title. It will incorporate two-player campaign-based co-op and feature numerous collectibles in its levels.

Kirby sucks enemies in, he doesn't lasso them.  I like the style though.  Definitely interested.

I like it.  My first thought was "Like Paper Mario, but Kirby, and Yarn, and not an RPG."

This is pure awesomeness and I say that as someone who holds no fond attachment to any of Nintendo's stable of characters.  I grew up before Nintendo was around as a game company and after they were I was firmly in the Sega then PC camp.  This game looks sweet thought.  Really really unique.  A pleasant surprise in a year were E3 surprises seem to be in short supply.

I like the style of the game, but that isn't kirby. You could literally put any character in his place and have the exact same game. Nothing about that trailer made it inherently Kirby.

Interesting to see where they got the idea for this game.

I'm stoked about all the side-scrolling goodness we've been seeing. For a while there I thought side-scrollers were a dying breed, but between Shadow Complex, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2's side-scrolling segments and now Rayman: Origins, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn, it looks like they're alive and well. It makes me really, really happy.

Actually now that you mention it, I completely agree. I don't see why they couldn't make this a new IP. It seems like they feel every new product has to be tied to an existing franchise...

My problem with Nintendo. They shouldn't feel so afraid to do something new. Their stuff sells.

See, consoles like the xbox and playstation 3 need to use their graphical capabilities for more experiences like this. If this can be done on the wii, I die happy imagining what something like this could be on one of the truly powerful consoles.

I hate it too, and I'd rather they would givfe it to some new characters (like what they should have done to star fox adventures) but this isn't a nintendo-exclusive practice. Look at the Raving Rabbids series, which had to live with "Rayman" on the front end of it for three or four games. Or capcom with Resident Evil 4 and on, or Square Enix with final fantasy spinoff after spinoff. This is part of the videogame culture, and indeed all of media.

True. As long as we have small-minded people only looking for something with a name attached to it, they'll be catering to those people to maximize profits. Or, in the unfortunate case of some video games, at least make back the money they spent. Again though, I think Nintendo is one of those rare companies that can afford to branch off and try something new and still get people buying it.

@Landon: Well, I do like Kirby, but the old-style game formula is pretty much played out by now. There's probably things they could do to revitalize it, but they haven't in quite some time. Canvas Curse was awesome because it was such a different game that happened to be pretty dang cool and fun in its own right.
