Nintendo Unveils the Wii U, Leaves the World In a State of Bewilderment

New controller technology offers tablet-like functions, third-party support heavily touted.

Say this for Nintendo: they're rarely predictable.

This morning's E3 2011 Nintendo press conference promised to unveil the console maker's next generation of hardware, and Nintendo did not disappoint. Instead, it mostly confused, bewildered, and at times, very much impressed.

Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.
Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.

Let's start with the name, which had been the subject of much bandying by various industry pundits. Everything from just "The Nintendo" to far more ludicrous options had been tossed around, but the near-universal agreement that the Wii branding would be ditched turned out to be a falsehood. The Wii U is the new system, and Reggie used the name unveiling to make a few alliterative talking points regarding "unity" and "utopia" among players.

The console is designed to cater to both the hardcore audience that Nintendo seemingly all but abandoned when the Wii was first introduced, and the casual-minded players who flocked to the Wii in its early days. But just what the hell is this thing, anyway?

Nearly all of the presentation was dedicated to the new controller technology, a slick-looking, tablet-inspired device with two circle sticks, a d-pad, the usual suite of buttons, a gyroscope, a built-in camera, and what have you. However, the big draw is the built-in screen, a 6.2 inch touch-sensitive screen that can emulate at least some version of the graphics you'll see on your TV screen.

Though the demo at the conference didn't do much to explain this, there is actually a Wii U box that hooks up to your TV, which works in proper HD. It's backward compatible with all existing Wii games, and apparently supports existing Wii hardware too.

This is the box. Yes, there is a box.
This is the box. Yes, there is a box.

One of the more intriguing things about the new controller device is that it actually lets you keep playing your games if you decide to do something else with your TV. Whatever game you're playing via the TV will automatically switch to the controller screen should you decide to start watching something else on television.

Nintendo's big thing was to demonstrate the number of different uses for the tech, which included everything from video chat, to stylus drawing, and a variety of motion/video-based controls. However, this was done largely at the expense of new game announcements. Reggie himself only touted one new game in development--a new Lego title from TT Games--but a video featuring several third-party developers and publishers including a slate of game announcements, including Darksiders II, Assassin's Creed, a new Tekken game, Metro Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, and more. EA's John Riccitiello even vaguely described the "possibility" of a Battlefield game appearing on the system, as Battlefield 3 footage played behind him. However, he stopped short of an actual announcement.

Nintendo is not showing any full games at E3, but rather is sticking to "game demos," which sound more like tech demo-ish proofs of concept. Regardless, we'll definitely be getting our hands on this strange, fascinating new device during the show. Look for more in the near future.

That controller doesn't look very comfortable, but at least it's a controller instead of a TV remote. Step in the right direction.

The feature set looked cool, but the Wiimote also looked cool and look at how that turned out. I grew tired of waggling years ago. Only time will tell if people make good use of it or not.

After I stopped laughing at how dumb the name was, I kept waiting for them to show the actual console, they just had to mention it. It was shown in the background of some footage of people having a great time playing some no name game.

All of the games I'm interested in are available on other consoles I already own, so there is no reason to buy one.

They're not completely comparable but if I had to choose between the Vita and the Wii U. I would probably spend my cash on the Vita.

Now that I know what the heck they were talking about, I'm pretty interested. I'd like to hear more before I get excited though, like how the controller feels, some of the system specs, and above all else what games are going to be coming out for it. We really didn't get much of that in the conference.

let's say someone comes in to watch a ballgame, as in their example... so the game you're playing moves over to the controller's screen.  Now, what happens to the sub-screen you were using for the touchy stuff?  Does that get shuffled over to to your 3DS?
No, silly... you wait until 2 years after launch for the 'Wii U Vision Plus' which is a second screen attachment for your Wii U controller!

If it really is a year and a half away then the lack of games is less curious, still a little odd though I think. I missed them say that though.

The controler feels good people and when you use the touch screen for stuff like changing weapons quick and equiping items faster  you will change your tune when you start using it.

IT has plenty of hardcare game uses.

I would not be surprized if nintendo copies Sony idea and adds a back pannel touch pad to it before it comes out or makes one with it afterwards there is a lot of empty space on the back of it.

Afterwards, on G4, Reggie was interviewed. During the interview, Kessler basically was all "WHERE ARE THE GAAAAAAMES?" to which Reggie said this year was dedicated to people getting their head around the controller, and that next year is when they'll announce things like price, launch line-up. Somewhere in there, he said "This holiday is all 3DS and Wii [HA to that second on], next holiday is Wii U."

I like the idea of playing a Virtual Console title on the controller. Let's face it, some of those SNES/64 games look butt ugly on HDTV in 480p. If Wii games are compatible, it seems fair to assume VC downloads are transferable too. Here's hoping.

So, if this holiday season is about the Wii, what's being released? Skyward Sword, sure, but one title does not make a season.

Honestly, the biggest problem for me is that Nintendo's entire strategy right now is reliant on fads; 3D and now tablets.

At least when the Wii came out the concept of motion gaming was new, they were the pioneers... now they're trying to play catchup not only to Microsoft and Sony, but they're trying to play Apple's game too.

As someone who owns a PS3, 360 and Wii, and was looking for either Sony or Nintendo to sell me on a handheld this conference it's hard to side with Nintendo right now. The value proposition for the Vita is higher than the 3DS to me, and I see Wii U as holding pace with the current get for 12-18 months from release and then being outpaced by more powerful consoles.

I want to like the console more than I do, but the Wii was cheap enough to basically make it a 1st party console. I just don't see how this can hit that same price point to where just 1st party games will be worth it.

The hardcore games were from other console.  And this one is a year and a half way?  Why wouldn't I already be buying a 360/PS3 at probably a much lower cost for those games?

I'm not 100% sure yet, but after looking at the pics of the Nintendos button config and messing around on a Xbox360 controller, the fact that the buttons are directly underneath the right stick kinda scream "Uncomfortable" to me. Everytime I try to 'pretend' hit buttons underneath the stick I have to raise my right palm off the controller. Having the buttoins to the upper right just seems much more intuitive to me, you just flick your thumb to the right and since it's already at an angle your thumb just naturally goes to the buttons. I can't imagine playing a FPS and having to hit a face button to jump everytime. Yech.

I don't even know what to think of having the sticks both high and at the same level yet either. Hmm, might be my Xbox360 muscle memory talking though, can't wait to hear some impressions of the feel of it.

I'm impressed for the first time by Nintendo in years.
Granted, wii (Like what I did there?) still don't know Jack about it.
I want to know who's the official Name Maker for Nintendo so I can slap him or her silly.
They finally (from what I can tell) make a console cool enough for an awesome name and they come up with WII-U?
I would have even settled for, "The Console worthy of our time and effort after selling a joke load of ridiculous plastic paper weights who's actual aforementioned console was funded by tricking people into buying mediocre complacent technology: New Nintendo Console."  (Phew)    :p
Now, if that thing can actually do everything they claim it can do?
Holy free Holy, you thought the original PS3 was expensive?
Of course they could just be jerking us around and when they actually release it, it ends up being three Gamecubes taped together, not two. That would just be sad.
It's official, I'm naming it the NNC.
Now excuse me while i look for my Sticky Notes.

@golguin: The problem is that they didn't actually show off the console...

Friend of mine and me actually thought nintendo's new console is gonna be a tablet when they first showed it off. I don't know why but they are too busy making it sound all "marketing like" that people don't even get the basic concept of it.

So i blame the presentation for people getting all confused/angry about it.

How do the screens transfer is what I'm wondering. I doubt that thing has much tech in it aside from the screen, so is it using some kinda wireless screen signal or something?

The roofs are gonna blow off when they reveal this for 200 dollars for the console (but the controllers are 50-70 bucks).

Ok this is what I think so far, they showcased the controller which was the main focus for now, there is a box which means you can play it on TV and judging by the demo video of the bird they can make great looking things on it.

So now you people are complaining about "fads"?  Seriously, are you EVER willing to accept anything other then the standard controller.  First people whined about how gimmicky the Wiimote was but now Sony has a rip off and MS introduced another gimmick control device.  Now you're all complaining because the controller incorporates a tablet design?

Thank goodness I'm a multiplat gamer that can actually see HUGE potential in this and not some ignorant, stupid fanboy who finds any reason to jab at another company for creating something different.

Do you find DS and 3DS owners bashing the Vita for the back panel touch plates?  Or how about marking the Vita as another glorified tablet handheld?

Grow up.

I feel like Nintendo invited me over to take a dip in their hottub, gave me a warm welcome at the door, handed me a glass of champagne, followed me out to the tub, watched me climb in, waited for me to get comfortable, then dumped a big bucket of ice water into the tub with me.

I feel disoriented, hurt, angry, sad, betrayed.  I thought maybe this might be the first Nintendo console I would buy since the N64...  but no.  No games, weird uncomfortable looking controller, dubious ability to keep up with future advancements in game design (no indication this thing is any more powerful than current gen 360/PS3).  No sale Nintendo.

Suggested less awkward ways to refer to this contraption:

will anyone want to play the games on the controller screen though that's the thing, it's not even HD .. it's just as Jeff says if you have a big ass TV why would you want to play a game on a much smaller screen,
i don't know how many people have their gaming systems in the living rooms where parents come in to want to watch TV instead.. i would have thought they would have them in the bedrooms or those that have them in living room are adults themselves so they choose either gaming or TV so the whole point of carring on the game on the controller screen seems pointless to me and no real reason for it.. unless i'm missing something.
