Nintendo Unveils the Wii U, Leaves the World In a State of Bewilderment

New controller technology offers tablet-like functions, third-party support heavily touted.

Say this for Nintendo: they're rarely predictable.

This morning's E3 2011 Nintendo press conference promised to unveil the console maker's next generation of hardware, and Nintendo did not disappoint. Instead, it mostly confused, bewildered, and at times, very much impressed.

Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.
Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.

Let's start with the name, which had been the subject of much bandying by various industry pundits. Everything from just "The Nintendo" to far more ludicrous options had been tossed around, but the near-universal agreement that the Wii branding would be ditched turned out to be a falsehood. The Wii U is the new system, and Reggie used the name unveiling to make a few alliterative talking points regarding "unity" and "utopia" among players.

The console is designed to cater to both the hardcore audience that Nintendo seemingly all but abandoned when the Wii was first introduced, and the casual-minded players who flocked to the Wii in its early days. But just what the hell is this thing, anyway?

Nearly all of the presentation was dedicated to the new controller technology, a slick-looking, tablet-inspired device with two circle sticks, a d-pad, the usual suite of buttons, a gyroscope, a built-in camera, and what have you. However, the big draw is the built-in screen, a 6.2 inch touch-sensitive screen that can emulate at least some version of the graphics you'll see on your TV screen.

Though the demo at the conference didn't do much to explain this, there is actually a Wii U box that hooks up to your TV, which works in proper HD. It's backward compatible with all existing Wii games, and apparently supports existing Wii hardware too.

This is the box. Yes, there is a box.
This is the box. Yes, there is a box.

One of the more intriguing things about the new controller device is that it actually lets you keep playing your games if you decide to do something else with your TV. Whatever game you're playing via the TV will automatically switch to the controller screen should you decide to start watching something else on television.

Nintendo's big thing was to demonstrate the number of different uses for the tech, which included everything from video chat, to stylus drawing, and a variety of motion/video-based controls. However, this was done largely at the expense of new game announcements. Reggie himself only touted one new game in development--a new Lego title from TT Games--but a video featuring several third-party developers and publishers including a slate of game announcements, including Darksiders II, Assassin's Creed, a new Tekken game, Metro Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, and more. EA's John Riccitiello even vaguely described the "possibility" of a Battlefield game appearing on the system, as Battlefield 3 footage played behind him. However, he stopped short of an actual announcement.

Nintendo is not showing any full games at E3, but rather is sticking to "game demos," which sound more like tech demo-ish proofs of concept. Regardless, we'll definitely be getting our hands on this strange, fascinating new device during the show. Look for more in the near future.

The orchestrated Zelda homage in the beginning of Nintendo's conference was amazing. I think Zelda alone is enough to get my to buy any Zelda console.

I'm still extremely confused....is it a tablet? is it a handheld? is it a console? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE NINTENDO! Also, cryptic information with no details to functionality or hardware is annoying as hell.

@leejunfan83: How so? They said that the Wii U controller isn't a portable stand-alone device. How does that compete with the 3DS?

@Curious_George: Man just to see the game in it's fullest, just like Drew I love to play racing game with all of the hud turned off but it can be annoying. If I can have the important stuff on the controller that I can check at a glance! MAAAANNN!!

Or a FF game where I select commands on the controller and watch the action on the TV in it's fullest! :O

If it's like the original Wii and you can't buy one 2 years after launch cause of stock issues, my excitement for this thing will seriously deflate. My opinion is still split cause the concept is amazing but the the graphics didn't blow me away.

My take-away from that presser. This'll be another year my Wii sits on the shelf gathering dust with no new titles worth buying. Ah well...

PSV sounds like the same pitch as the PSP. The WiiU sounds like the same pitch as the Wii, get it at launch and after a year or two see it collect dust and only play the Nintendo developed games. I also love how they mentioned Super Smash Bros and got a crowd reaction. They didn't show any footage or even a logo, it was just a way to grab some interest from Nintendo fans. Anyway interested to see how this thing turns out but I'll temper my expectations, as I am with the Vita as well.

I'm really torn on this. The idea of a console capable of playing current gen games both on big-ass HD TV, on the controller for toilet breaks and also, hey, basically comes as a baked in tablet? It really makes sense in terms of it being a console for everyone; hell, if Nintendo had the media relationships of Microsoft or Sony, it could make a compelling set-top box.

But as others have mentioned, it is possible by the time it comes out that X-Box and Playstation will have announced or at least teased their next thing, which once again leaves Nintendo a step behind. Its great to announce that Darkstalkers 2 and Arkham City are going to be on your console at launch, but when your console launches a year and a half from now, those games are also old news.

To Nintendo's credit, they finally realized that the Wii's controller and half-gen-behind hardware made it virtually impossible for it be home to the biggest multi-platform titles of the past generation, so the new controller has all the inputs you need for any game that will be on the 360 or PS3 to be ported to it as well. I just can't help but see the horizon and think it all feels a touch too late to make a difference now; two year ago, this thing would have cemented Nintendo ruling the world.

I heard Reggie talking on G4 and he says it's running at 1080P.  I really curious to know what media it is using and how much, if any, internal storage it is.

So many questions, but I must admit I am more interested in this now than I was before the press conference.

Madden was the game that actually had me somewhat intrigued. All the practical use of the DS ports but it plays like the "real" ones. If they can ACTUALLY deliver a 3rd party experience that's as good as the Xbox and PS3 versions then I'd consider getting one. But that's going to require waiting for reviews to flood in of one game on each of the three systems. Right now its just a promise.

Wasn't expecting to be this disappointed.

  • They had the Wii U "console" in the videos, why didn't they show it properly?
  • The first ever images were of Wii-looking games, which confused a lot of people
  • All the proper core games shown were multi-platform titles
  • No actual live gameplay demo
  • No tech talk, no tech specs
  • Terrible name

From the GT.tv stream's chat one could easily spot the trend that people were confused as hell about if this was an actual console built into the controller, a controller for the Wii or a new controller for a new console (which is the right answer). Oh I can't wait to get more information, but right now I'm very cold on this.

2. It's 2006 all over again. I DON'T GET WHAT NINTENDO IS TRYING TO SELL US THEREFORE I SECRETLY HOPE THEY FAIL WHILE AT THE SAME TIME AM PRETTY SURE THEY MAY HAVE CREATED SOMETHING THAT WILL PRINT $$ FOR THEM FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.

See people I told you it was round there was Pictures of this thing handed out by nintendo before they showed it at the press con.

IT rounder than a wii  and about the same size it's a new console not a controler there is a SD card slot in the same place.

HDMI undecided  Componet cables  go up to 1080I   and most xbox 360  and ps3 games run at 720p or under nintendo has no IDEA if they need to bother  adding a port and to the cost.

Wiis and DSes are still selling and they seemed to have all but abandoned those platforms. No new games for existing systems were shown at all (except for the 3DS) and the only Wii game mentioned was Skyward Sword. The only new 3DS game announced was Luigi's Mansion 2.
That conference was weird. I don't really know how Nintendo's future is going to pan out here. This doesn't feel as revolutionary as the Wii did.

I cannot imagine playing Call of Duty let alone Mario or Zelda of the unweildy tablet, I suppose you coudl prop it up in your lap...but...really?

Also, why would Activision, EA, Ubi, or anyoen else feel good about this. They will have to set a team of dudes on EVERY title to figure out what to do with Nintendos special needs controller, "Err we have to put something on the screen? But something that worn't require re-coding very much?

I'll have to watch the whole press breifing I guess, but I think MS and Sony just let of a sigh of relief and 3rd party developers are syaing, "Jesus H Chop sticks!!! Could they have made this any less helpful for making ports of games from XB360 and PS3?"

First of all, I think the name is really bad. However it seems like there can be some really great applications for the touch screen on controller.

The first thing that came to mind is that it would be great for games where you would need to pause the action and go into an inventory screen. Instead of pausing and obscuring the screen with UI, it would just show right on the WiiU touchscreen at all times and in real time you could switch weapons, drink potions, or use items.

Or... a top down view of a battle field could be displayed and you could issue movement commands to squad mates via the touch interface.

I just hope that those third-party developers fully jump on board and start innovating.

So you're playing a game on this thing, and you're playing a game on your big screen whist using the touch screen to do whatever-the-hell touchscreen stuff the game supports (map, or item inventory or whatever) and let's say someone comes in to watch a ballgame, as in their example... so the game you're playing moves over to the controller's screen.  Now, what happens to the sub-screen you were using for the touchy stuff?  Does that get shuffled over to to your 3DS?

They're appealing to both the hardcore and causal gamer with this. They're effing geniuses.

I can't find any footage of that video of the bird flying through that Japanese-style blossom garden environment. If that's what the WiiU is capable of in terms of graphical horsepower... ohmy.

Or you could just put the same thing on both of the screens. There's no need to use the second screen if you're just doing a quick and dirty port of your game, it just adds functionality for those that feel compelled to use it. If anything, the WiiU will be easier to port to because it has a control scheme built into is primary controller that has parity with the other two controllers.

Oh and games do not change automatic  you still have to change it  to  controler mode your self what are you smoking Alex Navarro ?

There is no way for it to tell when you change video mode on your TV most TV still send a signal out the port when ever the TV is on anyway or it's one way only it wont work.

and the controler is very light weight.
