Nintendo Unveils the Wii U, Leaves the World In a State of Bewilderment

New controller technology offers tablet-like functions, third-party support heavily touted.

Say this for Nintendo: they're rarely predictable.

This morning's E3 2011 Nintendo press conference promised to unveil the console maker's next generation of hardware, and Nintendo did not disappoint. Instead, it mostly confused, bewildered, and at times, very much impressed.

Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.
Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.

Let's start with the name, which had been the subject of much bandying by various industry pundits. Everything from just "The Nintendo" to far more ludicrous options had been tossed around, but the near-universal agreement that the Wii branding would be ditched turned out to be a falsehood. The Wii U is the new system, and Reggie used the name unveiling to make a few alliterative talking points regarding "unity" and "utopia" among players.

The console is designed to cater to both the hardcore audience that Nintendo seemingly all but abandoned when the Wii was first introduced, and the casual-minded players who flocked to the Wii in its early days. But just what the hell is this thing, anyway?

Nearly all of the presentation was dedicated to the new controller technology, a slick-looking, tablet-inspired device with two circle sticks, a d-pad, the usual suite of buttons, a gyroscope, a built-in camera, and what have you. However, the big draw is the built-in screen, a 6.2 inch touch-sensitive screen that can emulate at least some version of the graphics you'll see on your TV screen.

Though the demo at the conference didn't do much to explain this, there is actually a Wii U box that hooks up to your TV, which works in proper HD. It's backward compatible with all existing Wii games, and apparently supports existing Wii hardware too.

This is the box. Yes, there is a box.
This is the box. Yes, there is a box.

One of the more intriguing things about the new controller device is that it actually lets you keep playing your games if you decide to do something else with your TV. Whatever game you're playing via the TV will automatically switch to the controller screen should you decide to start watching something else on television.

Nintendo's big thing was to demonstrate the number of different uses for the tech, which included everything from video chat, to stylus drawing, and a variety of motion/video-based controls. However, this was done largely at the expense of new game announcements. Reggie himself only touted one new game in development--a new Lego title from TT Games--but a video featuring several third-party developers and publishers including a slate of game announcements, including Darksiders II, Assassin's Creed, a new Tekken game, Metro Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, and more. EA's John Riccitiello even vaguely described the "possibility" of a Battlefield game appearing on the system, as Battlefield 3 footage played behind him. However, he stopped short of an actual announcement.

Nintendo is not showing any full games at E3, but rather is sticking to "game demos," which sound more like tech demo-ish proofs of concept. Regardless, we'll definitely be getting our hands on this strange, fascinating new device during the show. Look for more in the near future.

THere's NO SUCH THING as a bad controller or interface. THe problem comes when developers try to shoehorn old game ideas onto a new controller.

Remember this badboy?

Anyways, I've always knows Nintendo to come up with original names for their systems. Jumping on the "same name with a bit of a change" bandwagon signals nothing good to me.

Never been a Nintendo fan, never had one of their consoles but for some strange reason this is actually making me curious... I think it's mostly because of the flash with the screen moving back and forth and the sweet way of using the tablet as an inventory. It does look pretty slick, it's just too bad it looks super uncomfortable to handle. Will be keeping an eye on this one for sure though.

So allow me to sum up the criticism thus far: blah blah blah specs, blah blah blah graphics, blah blah blah Kung Pow.

I highly doubt Sony or Microsoft's next console will be able to heavily overpower the WiiU in terms of graphics without having to cost and arm and a leg, which, if the Playstation 3 and Wii taught us anything, it's that economically feasible pricing trumps pure power. The WiiU will likely not have much more of a head start than Microsoft did with the 360, and nobody was predicting doom and gloom then, despite it not being the most powerful console to market.

NES -> Super NES

And while I do think that WiiU is the dumbest name for a product since the Wii, the name should not be considered indicative of the quality of the console. It might seem like another gimmick, but you gotta admit the concept is pretty amazing and original.

Regardless, when you tear away all the novelty all that is going to matter will be the quality of the games that will be released on this thing.

But will it be compatible with Gamecube stuff?
(or I'll simply replug my GC...)
And will we be able to transfer saves/profiles/etc.. from Wii to Wee-eww?

I am glad this thing will have use with my current wii games but I am bummed as to no longer playing my gamecube games on this magnificent machine. There probably going to make us download them to the console from the store site.

I'm not really sure what you mean by that, the Wii made them a ton of money and this will too. Plus now we're hopefully gonna have Wii ports of all the Multiplatform games that don't suck and maybe even introduce new touch screen support for inventory screens etc. Plus they announced some cool 3DS stuff and confirmed new Zelda release this holiday. What's the problem?
You're excited about a slew of game ports, to a new console whose power is probably only equal to the 360 and PS3? The Wii had some good ideas, but it went way too far in a casual gaming direction, and this new controller doesn't look to change that. The Wii had a long list of problems, but it's not altogether clear that Nintendo recognizes this. And now we have a new controller with a screen. It's a step backward. Maybe it will work for them, but good controllers don't require you to take your eyes off the TV to use them. I'm completely unconvinced that this controller will be useful at all. Dual screens works on a handheld because both screens are right in front of you. It strikes me as incredibly silly.

And I'm talking about the Wii U, not the 3DS. And wow, a new Zelda--another example of how Nintendo's priorities are screwy. It's biggest problem with the Wii was third party support and its over-reliance on old franchises.

First of all, this is without a doubt the dumbest console name yet. Secondly, Nintendo has a lot of convincing to do here. That tablet/controller looks really uncomfortable to hold.

@FMinus: The brink of complete and utter stupidity. There is a reason that developers make the kinds of games they do: they sell. And despite all the complaints about developers shitting out titles every year, those complaints are silent in comparison to the sounds of cash registers every time a new franchise comes out on the other consoles. Wii has virtually no third party support. We have to ask ourselves why the Wii has this problem, and the answer seems fairly obvious at this point: all the things that make the Wii's controls unique and different make good games virtually impossible to develop. Otherwise, we'd see them. But we don't see good third party games on the Wii, at least not in any substantial numbers.

Will the Wii U change that? Will it solve that problem? I doubt it. Basically, Nintendo has doubled down on stupid. I have no doubt you can do cool things with this console. But does it add anything unique to the gaming experience? Or is it, like the Wii has turned out to be for so many of us, something that is cool for a few minutes that seems like it could offer depth, but instead turns out to be an incredibly shallow mess. I would love a Wii that at least tried to meet the demands of modern gamers, but it doesn't look like the Wii U will be that. This has been the problem for Nintendo: being unique does not make something useful.

At this point Nintendo could have made a console with double the specs of the Ps3, works with the 360 controller, and dispenses blow jobs and people would still find something to complain about because it's Nintendo.

I LOL´ed so hard that I almost pissed my pants.

True very true.

I am actually very excited about this as long as there is not as much shovelware on the system

What I don't understand is Nintendo's push to third party support by citing Arkham City, Battlefield 3 etc. By the time the thing launches these releases would be irrelevant.

Potentially if it launches holiday 2012 we could conceivably be seeing the next move from MS and Sony as little as a year after (a 2013 holiday launch doesn't seem that unlikely, does it?). This would put the Wii U in the same problem for third party support since everyone will be looking to develop at the level of 360/PS3 successors. Really not sure if they've picked the right time to make this move.

Very fitting they used Darksiders II as the core entry title as that game has been touted as "Zelda" for big kids, I had a chuckle. It looks cool, but wait till release date next E3 when Sony or Microsoft could show you ultra real in-game graphics, with their on cooler version of these controls. I think the luster on this fancy new device will wear very quickly. PSVita's pricing shows me Sony now means business, I think they may even beat Microsoft to market!

I'm intrigued from a tech standpoint. I doubt I will get one of these (I don't even have a Wii) though. Any of the "hardcore" games that will come out on this will also probably come out on 360, a console I already own.
