Nintendo Unveils the Wii U, Leaves the World In a State of Bewilderment

New controller technology offers tablet-like functions, third-party support heavily touted.

Say this for Nintendo: they're rarely predictable.

This morning's E3 2011 Nintendo press conference promised to unveil the console maker's next generation of hardware, and Nintendo did not disappoint. Instead, it mostly confused, bewildered, and at times, very much impressed.

Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.
Games will support unique displays via the screen when you're playing on the TV, or transfer gameplay directly to the screen.

Let's start with the name, which had been the subject of much bandying by various industry pundits. Everything from just "The Nintendo" to far more ludicrous options had been tossed around, but the near-universal agreement that the Wii branding would be ditched turned out to be a falsehood. The Wii U is the new system, and Reggie used the name unveiling to make a few alliterative talking points regarding "unity" and "utopia" among players.

The console is designed to cater to both the hardcore audience that Nintendo seemingly all but abandoned when the Wii was first introduced, and the casual-minded players who flocked to the Wii in its early days. But just what the hell is this thing, anyway?

Nearly all of the presentation was dedicated to the new controller technology, a slick-looking, tablet-inspired device with two circle sticks, a d-pad, the usual suite of buttons, a gyroscope, a built-in camera, and what have you. However, the big draw is the built-in screen, a 6.2 inch touch-sensitive screen that can emulate at least some version of the graphics you'll see on your TV screen.

Though the demo at the conference didn't do much to explain this, there is actually a Wii U box that hooks up to your TV, which works in proper HD. It's backward compatible with all existing Wii games, and apparently supports existing Wii hardware too.

This is the box. Yes, there is a box.
This is the box. Yes, there is a box.

One of the more intriguing things about the new controller device is that it actually lets you keep playing your games if you decide to do something else with your TV. Whatever game you're playing via the TV will automatically switch to the controller screen should you decide to start watching something else on television.

Nintendo's big thing was to demonstrate the number of different uses for the tech, which included everything from video chat, to stylus drawing, and a variety of motion/video-based controls. However, this was done largely at the expense of new game announcements. Reggie himself only touted one new game in development--a new Lego title from TT Games--but a video featuring several third-party developers and publishers including a slate of game announcements, including Darksiders II, Assassin's Creed, a new Tekken game, Metro Last Light, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, and more. EA's John Riccitiello even vaguely described the "possibility" of a Battlefield game appearing on the system, as Battlefield 3 footage played behind him. However, he stopped short of an actual announcement.

Nintendo is not showing any full games at E3, but rather is sticking to "game demos," which sound more like tech demo-ish proofs of concept. Regardless, we'll definitely be getting our hands on this strange, fascinating new device during the show. Look for more in the near future.

Just when I had hopes that Nintendo would pull itself back from the brink, they offer this shit. Seriously, what the hell are they smoking over there?
I'm not really sure what you mean by that, the Wii made them a ton of money and this will too. Plus now we're hopefully gonna have Wii ports of all the Multiplatform games that don't suck and maybe even introduce new touch screen support for inventory screens etc. Plus they announced some cool 3DS stuff and confirmed new Zelda release this holiday. What's the problem?

I don't get how anyone can see this as boring, what the fuck were you expecting!? It pretty much lived up to every piece of leaked info.

Personally when Nintendo was hyping the Revolution as being a brand new way to control games, I instantly pictured touch screen controller, because they had just released the DS and I thought that would be a natural pairing of innovations.

Then it turned out to be condom wands, but I'm glad to see they finally came around to my original idea :smug:

@SockLobster: What they are doing are not helping their reputation with gamers.

All they seem to do now is sell gimmick products.
This one will probably go over well with the causal crowd, assuming it doesn't cost a bomb thanks to it's controller, but does nothing for gamers. Developers can't seem to be bother either, there doesn't appear to be anything there for them.

Compare the PSV, the developers love it to bits and have been saying so since it was announced, now they have a shit load of games lined up.

Wii U? Silence ...

Well, best of luck to them.
They are selling "a tablet in the controller" as the hook, they are going head to head with Apple's iPad 2 for the causal crowd - and personally I think Apple has an edge there in name recognition; the Wii didn't build their brand much, since most people threw it in the closet when the novelty wore off.

It's been revealed that Wii U supports 1080p using HDMI, internal flash, and both SD and USB.  I get that they don't want to kill sales this year, but not putting the specs out there and not mentioning that there IS a console box in addition to the controller to me was a big mistake.  I'm intrigued but that's about all I can say as of yet.

Well the question is "what is a gimmick?"

I would argue that it'st he other developers who are into gimmicks. They sell you the same product year after year with a tiny twist in the gameplay system and call it new.

What Nintendo does only seems like a gimmick because the rest of the industry is too rigid in it's operations these days to step outside their comfort zone of printing money for one second and utilize the new concepts that Nintendo proposes. Nintendo doesn't make gimmicks, it innovates. The problem is, innovation isn't in style. Repeated success is.

The sad thing is that newer gamers don't even realize how low the industry has sunk and how varied games and genre's used to be compared to what we get now.

Very cool ideas and in ideas these look pretty cool BUT.....

TO BIG! can not see the average Joe getting into it in real live. The ideas are great but I can not see it working, I could be wrong but there is more to this to why I think it wont be a hit....

This will have better graphics but there seems no word on Blu Ray. Looks to be DVD still and No new Online improvement information. I am sure it will come but Nintendo can not do online.

The PS3 is only just finally being tapped into in terms of its raw power. Games are now only just starting to look and run better then the 360 and I can see a year or so left in the console.
The 360 is still showing off amazing looking games and E3 this year has proven some great looking games yet again BUT! it is starting to show its age a little and I can see E3 2012 showing off the next console.

To that when E3 hits Nintendo will be showing off a bit more polished version of their console and games. BUT Xbox whatever will be there.
I just know this will be a bigger leap in power and graphics and offer more kinnect integration and grunt and maybe something else BUT will be again for hardcore gamers as well and will just be a beast and we will all go "HOLY CRAP, that looks awesome!" for games being shown.

I just get the feeling that the Wii U Will by then look already dated before or just after it's release.
It may look cool now but it is being compared to 360 and PS3 still and for Nintendo that is a BAD thing!
If it just looks decent compared to these then its going to really struggle in the next gen console wars to what this is being tipped as.

The graphics will be better but what they are showing is comunication between the controller and the console with heavy data.
- You have The controller actions and movements being processed.
- You have it streaming data to a TV AND the hand-held and Will need to for two player stuff as well.
- When the tv is off the console will stream over the air the data for the game to the handheld.
- You have it working with other wii devices
- It needs to be tight as hell as any lag will peeve people off.

In terms of developing for games:
- You have motion control on your game but what happens if someone goes controller LCD only? You then need to also develop controller only controls.
- Similar to above you are using the controller LCD for an inventory or map for your game or Screen to Screen gameplay but then someone goes controller only. You need to build something for that into your game.
This and other considerations such as working with wii remotes, new controller etc make this seem an annoying thing to code.
Developers will, 1st party companies will but it does not seem too appealing.

Overall I got the feeling Nintendo were selling this thing to developers not gamers, I even felt hint's of begging to be honest. I could hear "Please make games on this" from them.

I've got an idea. You know how mums and moms around the world already have trouble telling whether their kid has a PS2 or a 360 or a Wii? Well, let's release a whole new console. Let's give it a similar name to the last one. And let's make it look nearly identical to it as well. Let's also release a similar launch game lineup! It'll streamline gift giving for years!

"You want comfort, but you also want something new.  You want me to fuck your girlfriend, but you also want me to give you a high-five.  Contridiction?  I don't think so.  It's all just part of Nintendo's plan to bring you, and your girlfriend, a deeper... and wider experience."

Seriously, if I walked in on Reggie screwing my GF, that's all he would have to say.  I wouldn't even be mad at her.  How can you say no to this guy?

High-five Reggie!

I think this is an awesome idea and proves that Nintendo continues to set trends and innovate.  While the competition plays catch up with motion controls half a decade into their "lifespan" Nintendo says "whatev" and moves on to the next thing.

Regardless of what you think about their device, you can't deny that Nintendo was and continues to be the the industry leader.  Not just financially, either.

If you really think about it, the only system Nintendo had that was considered a failure, or a dull spark, was the Gamecube.  A system that completely lacked any innovation whatsoever.

I personally think this thing is really cool and look forward to all of the neat implementations developers come up with for it.  Also, kudos to Nintendo for focusing on how this changes the way we play, rather than just waving their hardware specs like some kind of e-peen.

I can see this being incredible with developers being innovative, but I can also see this being pretty bland if developers decide not to develop for it properly.

In the end, Nintendo made me exclaim "HOLY SHIT" when I saw this thing. Definitely a unique thing, and definitely some boundless possibilities in how you could create games for it.

@DevilishSix: I'm thinking the price won't be too killer.  Most devices with screens on them are also something else.  Like a smartphone packed with tons of other expensive crap like a cpu/gpu, large quantities of RAM, internal memory, etc, etc...

This is basically a touch screen (which really isn't very expensive as long as it's not something like SuperAMOLED+, normal LCD screens that size are fairly cheap) wrapped in a plastic case with buttons, a serviceable camera and some kind of radio communications.  I bet it retails for less than $80 dollars.

For sure. Improving the  ergonometry i s always good.  This however, does seem a bit backwards. Like you say... It kinda seems worse than the NES controller (at least for an extended period of time).

The controller at first glimpse was a little hard for my head to get around but given proper examination of where buttons and sticks were placed and what buttons were on the back I'm more hopeful. The z triggers look appropriately placed to where the sticks are so hopefully that leans to comfortable controls in shooters. The zelda real time tech demo while not an official game did look really good so I'm excited for what could come out of Nintendo's studios. No first party AAA franchises announced but next year's E3 will be much better for Nintendo.

This looks incredible! Good move sticking with the Wii name, though its not to my personal tastes it will allow the casual gamers to recognise it easily and identify it as the machine they play just dance and wii sports on. Ive already gotten used to the goofy sounding Vita and im sure in a couple of days time the WiiU will sound completely normal too, its a good year to be a gamer! ^_^

Its still early but I'm still not sure how much fun a Touch screen controller will be.  When it comes to the original Wii most of the games on that machine I can't stand just because the Wand controls are just so annoying.  Nintendo might be a very innovative game company but maybe changing the way we control video games isn't what we need.

I hate to shit all over Nintendo's innovation but just give me a new Super Mario game every once in a while and I'm happy, but thats just me.

Man, Whatever,

man, whatever this is obviously being directed at a big problem that happens in many households. The system is for the children to play with, but right when they're about to use it, mom or dad or both for that matter end up sitting in the living room and using the god-damned television! So yeah, without actually having seen the conference, or whatever they're calling it. I think this is the main reason why Nintendo went full "rword.org"

edit: Oh look at that. Just watched the reveal trailer, yes it turns out I'm being redundant.

Wii U?  More like P U m i rite??  (Sorry... first thing that popped in my head)

So they're basically packaging a budget tablet with a budget current gen console (ie. no mention of a hdd, 1080p, etc.).  think it's pretty clear given Nintendo's MO that this thing is meant to ape the iPad + App Store juggernaut that's so changed what a profitable business model in the industry looks like nowadays.  It's actually kinda clever, have the box do the grunt work and stream to the tablet so you can cut cost there and then sell an essentially wifi-only tablet with Nintendo apps for say $400, still cheaper than a base iPad.  It's definitely not aimed at the hardcore gamer as they claim, but might appeal to the same mass casual audience as the Wii (aka It Prints Money), only this time with a "Tablet for Dummies" instead of a "Console for Dummies".  I'm severely disappointed as a gamer, but have to give them a "clever girl" for trying to stem the Apple tide before it's too late.

Nintendo: "Gaming is fun, and everyone should be able to enjoy it. People are afraid and confused by the complexity of modern controllers - hence, the Wiimote!"

Nintendo: "We have this new controller. It's all about the controller. We're only talking about the controller. It has thousands of buttons, cameras, touchpads and all sorts of stuff. It's 'infinitely complex.' The WiiU controller!"

To me, Nintendo's marketing, which had already annoyed me to no ends, has finally caught up to them. The annoyance has become self-contradictory, messy and wholly unfathomable.

I'm....confused, and not a little annoyed at this announcement. Not to take away from this idea or anything, but are Nintendo trying to kid themselves? I haven't touched my Wii (teehee) in over a year, and that's because there is no 3rd party support for it. that can keep me going in between the 1st party games that I actually want, but can't find. Now they're releasing this...thing? With promises of 3rd party devs lining up for a shot at it? Please! Does anyone recall the hype that surrounded devs when the DS was released? Or the Wii? Or the 3DS?

Sorry to bring down the fanfare, but I'll believe this amazing, life-changing console when I see it, and more than likely, within the space of a year, there will probably be close to 100 crappy 3rd party kids games, not worth the price of the packaging on the box, and two 1st party games that people will buy because they bought the damn console in the first place. Dammit Nintendo, stop jerking us around, give us innovation, but not at the price of a possible lack of 3rd party and exclusive support. I love Nintendo, but christ almighty, this was just bad form! /rant

Worse gimmick than the Wii...
and the PSmove and Kinect.....  oh wait......
All three of those things are gimmicks.  All are short term stabs at a control interface that it appears the core gaming audience has limited or zero interest in.  The reason why is that motion controls are inferior to simple button and analog stick control in just about every way.  Ultimately the best, most intuitive control interface will win out.  Motion controls will never be that.  Not until I can make precision finger twiddles that surpass button control sensitivity.
I disagree with what you're saying at it's root.

I think the biggest problem in the industry right now is that people don't understand controllers.

Controllers, historically and necessesarily, define the types of games that are made for them.

Gamers who aren't that old won't really understand this, but  the biggest reason that PC Games and Console games used to be so far apart was because Console games used controllers and PC games used keyboards. That meant that console games gave us the likes of Super Mario World while PCs couldn't, and PCs gave us games like Diablo, Star Craft, Mechwarrior 2, and Kings Quest where consoles could not. And, in many ways, still cannot.

THere's NO SUCH THING as a bad controller or interface. THe problem comes when developers try to shoehorn old game ideas onto a new controller.

The Wii Remote for example, is a great input device for games. THe problem is that developers keep trying to shoehorn analog gamepad button presses onto a controller that is meant for motion.  That's just poor game design.

Until developers stop trying to play every single thing they do safe, and start taking some risks, no one who tries to innovate gaming will ever succeed.
