Sony Grabs Homeland Security Official to Oversee Security

Following the hacking of 100 million accounts, Sony's staffing up.

It seems like an eternity ago that every story on this site was about PlayStation Network, but the world has calmed since, and fears over mass fraud never seemed to surface.

Reuters is reporting that Sony's next step is to beef up internal oversight, and has picked up Philip Reitinger, former director of the US National Cyber Security Center at Homeland Security.

Sony recently announced more than three million users have registered PSN accounts since the attack, which started in April. More than 100 million accounts were affected, and by affected, I mean had their passwords exposed. The whole thing also affected Sony's bottom line; Sony reportedly lost more than $170 million during the ordeal.

Nothing is going to make me put my CC details back on a Sony console. If I ever buy anything from PSN again it will be using pre-paid cards.

That's the safest way to be online, yet people forget about these things because it's too much of a hassle to load money onto. Excuse me, but if protecting your identity or financial security is too much hassle we're better off being poor and homeless.

I'm just glad it's all over now. My birthday was within the first week of PSN being down, and my copy of LBP2 was kinda sorta useless. Cave men didn't have these problems. Cave men fought dinosaurs. (This comment has no historically accurate value)

Exactly how I'm approaching it. This seems like a PR stunt to me more than anything else.

Well for an free online service PSN was always vulnerable. It did seem a very long time until Sony pulled up its sleeves to sort out the situation. I will always keep my faith with sony providing a free online service amongst this money hungry climate is a rare thing these days.

Lol great, now Sony will be able to prevent 20% of all hacks, just like the TSA passes 20% of their internal security audits. I feel safer already.
