Sources: The Upgraded PlayStation 4 is Codenamed NEO, Contains Upgraded CPU, GPU, RAM

Though the NEO will offer greater visual fidelity than the original PS4, Sony is taking measures not to split their user base in two.

It is not confirmed whether or not the NEO can stop bullets. I'm sorry for this very easy joke, it's been a long day.
It is not confirmed whether or not the NEO can stop bullets. I'm sorry for this very easy joke, it's been a long day.

Earlier this year, rumors began to fly that Sony would release an upgraded version of the PlayStation 4, a console often called the PS4.5 or the PS4K by fans and press. Today, multiple sources have confirmed for us details of the project, which is internally referred to as the NEO. No price was provided, but previous reports indicate that the NEO would sell at $399. At time of publishing, Sony has not returned our request for comment, but we will update this story if the company responds.

The NEO will feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory. The documents we've received note that the HDD in the NEO is the same as that in the original PlayStation 4, but it's not clear if that means in terms of capacity or connection speed. Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.

Original PS4NEO
CPU8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
GPUAMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHzImproved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz
Memory8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

Games running in NEO mode will be able to use the hardware upgrades (and an additional 512 MiB in the memory budget) to offer increased and more stable frame rate and higher visual fidelity, at least when those games run at 1080p on HDTVs. The NEO will also support 4K image output, but games themselves are not required to be 4K native.

In the documents we’ve received, Sony offers suggestions for reaching 4K/UltraHD resolutions for NEO mode game builds, but they're also giving developers a degree of freedom with how to approach this. 4K TV owners should expect the NEO to upscale games to fit the format, but one place Sony is unwilling to bend is on frame rate. Throughout the documents, Sony repeatedly reminds developers that the frame rate of games in NEO Mode must meet or exceed the frame rate of the game on the original PS4 system.

Sadly, I doubt that the NEO will be anywhere near as cute as this.
Sadly, I doubt that the NEO will be anywhere near as cute as this.

The NEO will not supplant the current PS4, but will exist alongside of it and use the same user environment. The PS4 and NEO will use the same PSN store, connect to the same online communities, and offer the same user experience, so expect to see the same cross media bar that you’re used to. Players will be able to retain all of the purchases they made on the PS4.

Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4. That said, so long as both systems have the same feature, the NEO can run an improved version. A local co-op game that features four players on the base PS4 could offer an eight player co-op mode on the NEO, for instance. But again, don't expect those differences to transfer to online modes.

PS4 Base and NEO versions of a game will also need to have parity with regard to peripheral support. So don’t expect NEO Games to have exclusive VR modes. Sony makes no mention of PlayStation VR in the docs we've seen, so it's hard to know what that means for the persistent rumors that this upgraded PS4 will be able to support PSVR without the "breakout box" that the headset ships with. That said, so long as the NEO's upgrades apply to PSVR games, developers should be able to get even more performance out of Sony's VR headset.

Fallout 4 is one game of many that could benefit from the NEO... if Bethesda is willing to put in the work.
Fallout 4 is one game of many that could benefit from the NEO... if Bethesda is willing to put in the work.

Though every PS4 game released as of October of this year will need to support both the original PS4 and the NEO, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Neo will release in October. Additionally, games released in the late September window will require a day one patch that updates them to NEO standards. The documents we’ve received explicitly note that devs are allowed to launch NEO-ready games before the NEO itself releases.

Games released previous to the NEO can take advantage of this hardware upgrade, but only if developers decide to patch their titles. That isn’t too surprising: This was never going to be a magical “upgrade” device. I'm curious to see if any developers will take advantage of the NEO to improve previous PS4 releases. (I would certainly appreciate it if Bethesda would give the NEO-treatment to Fallout 4).

All of this is pretty well in line with early reports and rumors. A recent Digital Foundry report outlined the likely limits of an upgraded PS4, and the info we've received from sources seems in line with those findings.

I'm happy that Sony will take steps to keep the PS4 and NEO users connected, and that they are setting strict guidelines for developers. There's a chance that will help to keep the user base unified despite new hardware entering the market. This could be a hard sell to those users who only recently purchased a PS4 if there isn't an upgrade path made available to them. At the same time, this could pave the way to drop the original PS4 price even further, offering cheaper access to a really solid console. In any case, I'm hopeful that Sony can make this work. Expect more details to emerge over the coming weeks.

Do you think base PS4 will get token features while the true feature set is given to the Neo, circumventing the stipulation that you can't give Neo games special features?

Initially there won't be a lot of incentive to develop a NEO mode until more consoles have been sold. It's not a complete userbase cutoff but there will be a rift.

SCOOPS!
I would pick this up for sure if they offer a upgrade path/ trade in option for regular PS4, something like a 200$ off type deal or something like that. If not, I will just wait a while then pick one up for sure.

Curious. If they're going to force that devs can't offer games exclusive to it, won't any gains only be marginal? Better load times and maybe less texture pop-in? Does this set the stage for -another- iteration two years from now?

I don't see how this will be much of a boost if devs can't design specifically for it. I wonder how much of a difference this will really make. Seems like less of an upgrade than even the New 3DS vs 3DS.

If I could trade in my PS4 to Sony for a discounted price I would do it (maybe half the price of the main hardware). But I have a hard time justifying a new purchase of the same system at the same price. I guess I did it with the Xbox 360, and the PS3 really, but I had fewer financial responsibilities then. I have a harder time justifying it now.

It kinda irks me when people start talking about upgrade paths, you're not entitled to a new thing just because you bought the old thing. If they should worry about that then why release anything new at all, there will always be people who just bought the older thing, it doesn't mean you deserve to get the newer thing cheaper.

Also there is no way this will have anything to do with 4k, its still nowhere near powerful enough so don't get your hopes up. Games probably wont have more effects or be any prettier on one over the other, I'm guessing its about better frame rates because the current consoles are suffering for performance already and its still early in the cycle.

If there's a decent deal to exchange PS4's for an upgrade, I would consider getting this. If I just have to pay full price...not so much. At least all of this sounds completely reasonable, and doesn't seem like it will hurt the user base in any way.

Isn't this all kind of obvious? Were people expecting them to downgrade the hardware in the 4.5? Lol

Guess I need to wait to E3 cause this has put me off getting a ps4 any time soon due to the uncertainty. I can only imagine that people knowledgeable about games would probably just want the Neo from now on.

The repeated, strict requirements to support PS4/NEO parity are the most interesting thing, but I do wonder how long that sticks. Sony would be in a PR nightmare and fighting a huge purchasing base that bought the PS4 on promises that haven't yet been completely fulfilled in terms of big blockbuster releases. Hell, they still might be in that situation even with all they're trying to do not to shaft PS4 owners.

But you could easily see a year or two after release as the NEO base expands or they reach a tipping point of original versus new PS4 players that they ease the parity requirements and let some NEO-exclusive features or games move forward. Especially as developers push back or start focusing on pushing the NEO's hardware. As is you're basically requiring devs to do extra work to publish on Sony platform for little expected additional sales. It's hard to see how they maintain the PS4/NEO equal treatment through the expected life of the PS4.

I think it's a good move, personally as long as Sony does keep with their requirements that there aren't Neo-only games. I don't see how people who stick with their current PS4 and don't upgrade are losing anything. Just like you don't have to replace your phone every time a new model comes out, I see no reason you have to upgrade to the Neo immediately if it doesn't make sense for you. I like the idea of quicker iterations for those who want to be closer to the edge of tech.

I am still baffled by this whole thing, even if all games will be playable on both version it still splits the userbase in a way, with the ghetto lo fi versions vs the pretty high end version, people who bought a ps4 recently will be pissed, and rightly so, and the upgrade itself is pretty underwhelming and nowhere near able to run games at 4k with any setting over a pc equivalent of low graphical settings, it seems like a half assed step up instead of a proper playstation 5, it just seems like a shitty way for sony to squeeze more money from their loyal costumers.

@mcmax3000: I mean they would certainly run the risk of alienating current ps4 owners if you don't do this.

If there is a better ps4 that devs are taking advantage of with better framerate, graphics, load times, etc. Current ps4 owners would definitely want it.

Also, for the people hoping for a trade in program: There is no chance in this reality, or another for that matter, that Sony is gonna take your old ass PS4 and give you one of these new ones on the cheap. None.

This seems real weird but I guess they've already hit a wall. I was hoping for some kind of N64 expansion pack deal with some crazy docking base. At least they are committed to not wrecking the user base so good on them for that.

Great article Austin. Looks like there's a new scoops in town:

This isn't as bad as it sounded but I can still see the ps4.0 modes being really shitty.

I don't have a clue why Sony are doing this, stupid risk to take in a position of dominance unseen since the ps2 era.

@commieninja: i'm more upset about the frame rate improvements, I could care less about the visuals but I can't afford a good pc so i'm going to be stuck with bad framerate games because I already have a PS4 and refuse to buy a better one for full price. They say they are trying not to alienate people like me but I don't trust them enough to not just ship games that run like garbage on the original system. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

Nice get, Austin. This seems like the "right" way to do this, so long as no PS4 owner gets locked out. And it means the XBox will once again have to follow suit to keep pace with Sony.

@coolarman: I feel like any kind of upgrade price that current users that would get mad will feel is reasonable (I feel like I've seen $100 - $200 thrown around a lot since this news started hitting) is probably lower than what it will cost Sony to make these things, and I don't see Sony being in a position to sell a bunch of these things at a loss just to make people happy.

This is such a strange decision. It is kinda like the elite xbox 360 I guess or maybe the new 3DS (minus the new 3DS specific games) but for some reason this feels dirty. I hope that what they say is true and the millions of people who have the base PS4 (including my launch unit) still will be able to play everything and not be hampered but I am totally skeptical.

Games are constantly shipping broken as it is, so adding another SKU does not seem like an ideal situation for anyone. Also I worry about running into situation like Hyrule Warriors on 3DS (that game appears to be almost unplayable but even more so on the original 3DS). I sure hope this is not a total fuck up!

Why does the article repeatedly refer to Sony statements but Sony didn't comment for the article, shouldn't it be "sources" or "documents"?

Also, no way do they keep that parity clause for PSVR for very long.
