The Best Possible News About Tekken 6: No Character Unlocks

Remember playing through every Tekken game ever released about 30 times? Yeah, no more of that.

See ya soon, you crotchety old bastard.
See ya soon, you crotchety old bastard.
Heihachi  be praised, Namco has seen the light!

There's a time-honored tradition among fighting games of forcing you to play through the arcade mode--against the boring AI, naturally--over and over ad nauseam to open up access to all the playable characters. Thankfully, it's a tradition Namco Bandai is finally casting off with Tekken 6, according to an interview on VideoGamer.com with director Katsuhiro Harada (saw this on 1UP). Good news; in my view, Tekken has generally been the most egregious offender in this category.

Why we locked the characters originally was that in the arcades, it was kind of to extend the life of the game by gradually unlocking characters. And also with the home versions as well, because you can rent games or whatever, it was to protect us against that.

That’s kind of outdated now though, especially with online play. If we were to have locked characters it would irritate a lot of people, to be playing against others online and to not have all the characters available. So I think it’s no longer useful.

'Tis music to mine ears, because, man, that is one outdated mechanic. I very grudgingly played through Street Fighter IV just enough times to get almost everyone, but I never did get around to unlocking Seth. There's no bigger bummer than getting a new fighting game and hopping online only to face characters you can't choose yourself, and I'm glad Namco's come around to that fact.

Gut check time: Who's still a Tekken fan around here? It's a big year for fighting games; is this your game? Here's a reminder of how it's shaping up.

I must admit much of the reason I play fighting games is to unlock stuff. I play until I've unlocked all characters, costumes, weapons or whatever and then I stop. I know that's not the way to play a fighting game, but I don't have the dedication to learn to play the game good enough to have any fun online anyway and unlocking things is what makes me play against the AI, the story in such games are not worth it...I don't know why I even play fighting games...I have DoA4, VF5, SC4, SSF2: HDTR I'm not going to get Tekken 6 as well...

That's good I guess, although I can see people complaining about how not unlocking characters will lessen the overall replay value expressed by some people.

For me that is an awesome thing. I hate having to unlock characters. I havent unlocked everyone in Street Fighter IV yet, I dont have the patience.

Yeah, props for that!

The only Tekken I enjoyed was 2 or 3(I thought the first one looked and played horrible), but then the memorizing of combos and air juggles stopped appealing to me on subsequent sequels.  It suddenly seemed stiff and artificial, compared to other 3D fighting games at the time. Seeing this, it seems there is still some of that stiffness and awkwardness in the fighting engine.

Im still interested in it, to see if I could enjoy it again, or to see if it has changed.

Unlocking characters was my favourite thing to do in fighting games. Oh well, it's still gonna be great.

This game could actually be quite awesome. I loved Tekken 5, even though I've always sucked at it.

Hmmm...I need to give this game a shot once it's out.  I've only had Tekken 4 but I played the shit out of it and had a ton of fun with it.  If nothing else, I'll have something to compare with SFIV to see which I like better.

Nice, I'm not really interested in Tekken but hopefully more fighting games do this.

I actually really like unlocking stuff, but it doesn't have to be characters. I understand that online fairness can be perceived as an issue when some people have a character unlocked where others don't. Still, this decision begs the question, 'Why play single player at all?'. Maybe that's the question the developers should be asking themselves. In an era where almost all console owners are online, should there be a single player mode at all? This question may seem dramatic, but what is the point in a single player mode without unlocks when a practice mode is usually present? Costume unlocks alone may not be enough, they certainly wouldn't be for me.

What strikes me as odd is that the introduction of unlockable weapons and equipment in online shooters such as CoD4 was generally very well received, yet this opposite announcement is also well received.

Looks like I'm of a dying breed of people who still like Tekken.  Nothing like some good stupid-fun fighting.
