BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

Welcome to GB, Patrick~

As for ideas... I think a weekly round-up video on, say, Friday, would be great and might catch some of the things you guys miss on the podcast or news that happen to occur right after you post it.

Knee jerk response when I read this:

  • Awesome. Loved that guy on feedback, and I hope they get him on some bombcasts.
  • He knows his stuff.
  • Every one that works at Whiskey seems to put on some weight, and holy fuck does Pat need some meat on his bones. I have seen tooth picks that dwarf that guy.

EDIT: I would like to see a short little daily video, or podcast. If you folks could keep it kind of consistent it would be nice to have something on GB to look forward too daily. I miss that about the ER's. Knowing that every day I logged on there would be something new to watch.

If it's going to be text, it's got to be original. The stuff that Nicholson usually post's is the same lame news crap that IGN and Kotaku have and kind of just spams the main page.

I would welcome more VIDEO, whether it be daily or a weekly thing. A small news podcast could be cool too. As long as nothing will be taken away from the BombCast.

Anyways, welcome Patrick!

Welcome Patrick!

I'm torn between the weekly news wrap-up and the daily podcast. Maybe a daily podcast with the Friday pod wrapping up the biggest news bits of the week at the end.

Klepek is awesome.  I'm psyched to hear he's headed to join Giant Bomb.  He's definitely one of my most respected games journalists out there.  Here's to awesome future news coverage!

" As new goes, I like things dry. Most gaming sites seem to go for either forwarding press releases or loading their "news" with obnoxious attempts at personality. When it comes to video games, there are very few sources for intelligent, reliable news. Despite numerous "news" sections, there's a distinct absence of genuine journalism.Text is the best format for serious news; audio and video add limitations and have few benefits. The current format is fine. Depending on the number of volumes, it might be worth having a topical organization scheme (e.g., Business, Studies, Releases, etc.). Given a single news editor, I suspect that there probably won't be sufficient volume for demarcation, though. "
Agree with this completely. Blogs turned into this to differentiate themselves from traditional print, boring journalism. Now, the vast majority is just snark. This is the case with sports blogs, as well. So seeing hard news with some personality that's not overbearing would be great. Thankfully, that's right up Klepick's alley, so this is pretty much the perfect hire.

Wow! Patrick has been everywhere in the past 5 years! From MTV, 1UP, G4tv.com, EGMi, and now Giantbomb?! All I can say is: Welcome to the Giantbomb team, Patrick!
Personally, I think the video game industry has been full of shit for the past few years now. And there's no signs of stopping the PR vomit that is plaguing our hobby. I'm tired of hyperbole dictating the sales of games through spin from the other gaming news sites, or the lack of detail of upcoming games. Briefly touching on a title of an upcoming game that is scheduled to come out on a later date isn't considered reporting.

What we want, as gamers, is a "no-bullshit-assessment" of what is coming out without the fluff, and without personal spin or opinions. Just give it to us straight! The integrity of reviews, on the other hand, have especially been destroyed because of hyperbole. A good example of that is Homefront. The game sucked, and everyone knows it, thus the high return rate of the game itself. But for whatever reason, (most likely a financial decision) the other gaming sites declared it a decent game and gave it a good score, ultimately defeating the purpose of reviews.

As for improvements of Giantbomb, I would like to see a video weekly wrap-up, flourished with a release date schedule graphic in the back-ground, detailing what game(s) will be coming out for the next week or so throughout the year.

The content from Giantbomb, both past and present, is reliable reporting and fun to watch. The opinions, or what have you, is left on the podcasts - where it should be.

Keep on keeping on, Giantbomb! We love you.

I think a weekly audio wrap up, some interesting long form articles and once in a while a video feature piece with interviews, etc. would be an ideal way to cover news. It would bring something different to GB than what the other blogs provide. Daily posts would be nice too, plus the occasional hot scoop. Looking forward to more content, no matter how you guys decide to take it.

The only way I could see a video news wrap-up being entertaining is if it was roundtable style, not just one guy talking to a camera. Also, features, features, and more features.

Klepeck is a good guy. I've enjoyed listening to him since the 1Up Show era. Glad he's on board and hope to hear from him in the podcast from time to time.

Oh, and I would love to get more "fresh" news.  I know why it is this way and its not a big deal, but it  can be annoying when I want Giant Bomb to me my go to place and I feel I have to check news at the other blogs (which I would prefer to never go to Kotaku again, but thats my problem) and then come to Giant Bomb for everything else.

I am personally really pleased about this news because the one area where Giant Bomb has always lacked (but since Brad Nicholson not quite as much) is news.

I don't know what I would like from Giant Bomb in the future in terms of content, but where GB has excelled in past is in the use original formats, like the Quick-look. Here in Australia, one of the biggest radio stations is called Triple J, and each day at 5:30 they have a show called Hack. It lasts 30 minutes and it is a summation of the daily news, with opinions from both sides of the stories via guests. They usually run down the headlines, then will go into depth about one or two stories having experts, or people directly affect by the events at hand on the show. Then listeners call up and share their opinions too.
A show like this may be too production heavy for GB to do on a daily basis, but may perhaps work on a weekly schedule. Combining knowledge and opinion makes for both entertaining and insightful news, which seems to lacking these days in the world of video games.

I'm looking forward to having him on board! My only request is that news is given in an organized manner. As many people have stated, when GiantBomb is hit with a sudden rush of new videos, articles and other content it becomes more difficult to sort through it than it should be.

Awesome, I think a short weekly video segment would be cool sort of like the ILM.  Unless there is not enough news that matters on a weekly basis to warrant it.  Also through out the week as new stuff comes out he could do it in text format or when big stories break do a Just In video segment.  Just my 2 cents.

If I can file a single complaint against Brad Nicholson's way of doing things, it's that he's usually several hours too slow.

I should point out that this is not a Brad Nicholson issue, but an internal one. Blame me, not him. We look at all stories before they run and, without a dedicated news person, we had to fit that in alongside everything else we were doing. As a result, sometimes stuff would run like 8 hours after Brad filed it. This will be one of the immediate things we can fix now.

@Jeff:  Does he get to wear the news hat, or is he not ready for such a responsibility?

But seriously, I'm a huge fan of the video content and maybe something along the lines of Comic Vine's weekly news wrap up, might be the way to go. Because on news weeks like these one, a lot of stories were getting posted, so alot gets kicked off the main page and buried.

But, please, keep dropping your suggestions in here. I'll be reading. That's all I'm going to be doing tomorrow.

Again, thanks. I'm mildly freaking out.
"

As someone who technically can get away with calling himself a newsman in another media, gotta say you killed it on the Activision/West/Zampella story. Really excited to see what you bring to GB!

As to Jeff's question regarding how to deliver the news, I find myself torn. The thought of, say, a 20-minute to half-hour podcast that is just straight-up news is actually very interesting, but only if it has a bed of typewriter sounds that is always behind it.

Really though, trying to do something different just for the sake of trying to do something different may not be all that productive. I'm sure you folks will figure something out, but GB bringing more original news stories the old fashioned way is well enough for me.

I think that all of the methods for conveying news that you mentioned could work well. One possible way to do things would be to write up text stories and then make a video at the end of the week recapping the news for people who may have missed it for some reason or another during the week. A daily podcast would be super cool, but I feel like that isn't the most efficient way to do it.

I would gladly just take text stories though. It seems like the most professional approach to news, and I enjoy reading news stories. I feel like we don't get to do that as much any more.

On behalf of all Patricks, I formally welcome Patrick Klepek to Giant Bomb!

As for how the news should be handled, I think that a weekly video wrap up would be awesome but maybe not the most feasible. The other option, that I think should happen regardless of a video should be some sort of a ticker or text box that displays/links to the days/weeks top news stories.

I also fully support putting Patrick in some crazy segments like the ones with Tested. He seems like the kind of person I would like to see squirm... and cue evil laugh.

Sweet GB is growing soon we will take over the world!

I think you should add a side collum with the news and also do a weekly news video about the top news like Comic Vine does.
