There Is No "GL HF" In The "Global StarCraft II League"

$85,000 prizes every month? Bring me my pylons. I'm going to Korea!

Today, GomTV, the popular Korean video streaming service that broadcasts professional StarCraft matches online, announced the formation of the "Global StarCraft II League," a worldwide circuit that will bring the best Terran, Protoss, and Zerg players together in matches that will be streamed live over the Internet. Whether you're looking to take your Terran marine rush against Korea's finest Zerg players, or just watch high-level StarCraft II play, the newly formed GSL seems designed to fulfill both needs, providing an enjoyable StarCraft experience to players regardless of what they're looking for.

Here's how it goes down: Every month, the GSL will hold an open StarCraft II tournament to determine player placement within the upper or lower leagues of the circuit. Once placement has been allotted, the GSL begins its qualifying matches in earnest with daily StarCraft II matches streamed on GomTV. Those players who advance through the tournament will compete for a grand prize of 100,000,000 Korean won (around $85,000) as well as secured placement in future GSL tournaments.

You didn't hotkey your nexus, dude! Of course this was going to happen!
You didn't hotkey your nexus, dude! Of course this was going to happen!

As you can see, between the serious prize money and the various ways to participate or watch the matches, Korea and the GSL are not screwing around with its E-Sports. These are not friendly tournaments, and one look at the list of provided GSL rule set reveals just how serious this competition looks to be. Here's the list of infractions that will disqualify you from the tournament.

  • A friend notification appears during the game.
  • You received a message from a person during the game.
  • You chat (besides surrendering).
  • You act violently towards the players or the audience.
  • You fail to arrive 15 minutes before the game.
  • You take longer than 15 minutes to set up.

And the craziest regulation of all:

  •  GomTV can deny your participation if you are found unfit to be a gamer.

So, folks, given all the current StarCraft II fever centered around the game's release, are you guys interested in watching or participating in high level StarCraft play? And, more importantly, can you figure what kind of person is unfit to be a gamer? What would you have to do at a StarCraft tournament that would deem you unfit to game?

One hundred million won sounds like a load of money; a lot more money than it actually is. Though I guess that is still a lot of money to put up every month to pay people for playing video games better than other people.

They need a portrait picture to give to people who are unfit to be gamers that has Raynor wearing a dunce cap and he has a big frown.

@stalefishies: It's not at all, but if you make that every month it isn't all that bad, plus if you have 100,000 Won you can't live pretty well for a week so one hundred million is pretty good... As long as you only spend it in Korea

Showing up drunk maybe? Actually wouldn't that just make it a whole lot better?
I know I'd pay to see two professional SC players play each other whilst smashed.

The words "unfit" and "gamer" in the same sentence, but not in the way I would have expected lol.

Oh and not being able to chat during a game sounds too strict.  I can understand wanting to look professional and having no friend pop-ups, but what's the problem with a little taunting or whatever from the players?

It's the end results of how the rules in SC:BW tournaments changed over the years.

I agree. And back in the early days of korean SC:BW, progamers were allowed to chat with each other. It's kind of a bummer to see that slowly go away.

I think they mean playing in the tournament while not really being worthy of a spot in it based on skill.

I also guess all the message/friend request stuff is to combat cheating and throwing matches.

Is there a way to turn all that friend request messaging off? I thought the whole point of Bnet was that stuff is always going, but I guess I was wrong. I know you can set your status to away, but if a dude logs in it'll still pop up and disqualify you. Anyway it sounds cool. You have to take stuff like this seriously. Even knowing what build order an opponent is doing is enough to give you a huge advantage if you read their strats well enough. I can see why they wouldn't want messaging and stuff for that very reason.

What are you trying to say? $85 bucks lets you live pretty good for a week, but you'd need to make $85,000 a month, to be doing okay? Only in Korea? I don't get it...

The reason for the chatting and friend notification/message rules is because it will be broadcasted on tv they don't want people's names appearing who aren't playing, and they don't want someone to say something or receive a message that is obscene since they will be broadcasted live. There have been instances of stations being fined for that happening during live brood war events where progamers play on battle.net to show off.
