Treyarch Is All Call Of Duty, All The Time

At least it'll be even easier to predict what the developer is doing from here on.

Unless Activision gives Treyarch the green light to drop a grouchy and unkempt Peter Parker or Tony Hawk in the middle of a campaign during a period of armed hostility, it appears as if we won't see the developer give Spider-Man, or really any other not-Call-of-Duty series like Tony Hawk, another go. In a recent conversation with CVG, Treyarch boss Mark Lamia confirmed that the studio is a "100-percent Call of Duty Studio."

"Treyarch is a 100-percent Call of Duty studio--and it has been for a long time now, long before any of [the Infinity Ward] events occurred," Lamia said.

No Caption Provided
The events Lamia are referring to are the dismissal of Infinity Ward president Jason West and company CEO Vince Zampella, as well as, assumedly, the subsequent departures of several members of the studio that built the Modern Warfare series. Zampella and West have since founded Respawn Entertainment.

"We focused all of our efforts on creating the best Call of Duty game we possibly can and what that meant is not working on anything else," Lamia continued. "We are a multiple team studio and focusing on Call of Duty and Call of Duty gameplay meant focusing all of our teams on that."

Treyarch is currently developing Call of Duty: Black Ops, a FPS title that has flame-spewing shotguns. Jeff recently got a chance to check out the game. You can read his impressions here. Spoiler, though: it sounds radical.

Do you think Treyarch should be all Call of Duty, all the time? Or would you rather it be able to develop whatever it wanted, whenever? Tell us in the comments and on the boards!

Wasn't Spiderman 2: The game actually a good game though?

And if I recall, the Treyarch CoD games were awful. CoD3 was bad, but World At War was worse.

Treyarch has yet to develop a call of duty game with originality. They generally take the gameplay concepts of the previous installment and elaborate in the same direction. So as long as treyarch is able to start creating groundbreaking call of duty games and pick up for infinity wards slack then I guess I wouldnt mind if Treyarch was 100% call of duty. However I personally dont think that Treyarch is a AAA game studio so I doubt this will happen

World at War was AWESOME. You haters shut your faces. They do well with what they are given, its hard living under the iron, money grabbing, fist of Activision. Give them a break.

"Them" would be Activison, not Treyarch.

Prob one of the few who do actually enjoy Treyarch's versions of CoD. World at War was surprisingly engaging and played well. Shame they consider themselves a 100% COD company, as their James Bond title was also a fun game.

That really sucks that Activision has pretty much told everyone at Treyarch, "Hey, get used to Call of Duty because you're going to keep making this shit".

So my question is who is Treyarch's Treyarch? I mean Treyarch has always been the studio that Activision gets to work on the sequels that the original developer either couldn't or wouldn't do. If they are going 100% Call of Duty who is the studio that does the off-year Call of Duty games and who is the studio that picks up the sequels for other franchise?

I assume Treyarch isn't going to do yearly Call of Duty games, maybe I'm wrong but it seems like Activision understands it takes a two year cycle to make a good Call of Duty game. So is slegehammer the off-year game, do they do an off-year CoD that isn't an FPS? Is Raven picking up the slack? Are there going to be two alternating CoD teams in Treyarch?

As for other franchises, maybe they don't need one. I can't really think of another big Activison franchise that they want to pump sequels out for, Guitar Hero is in intensive care, Tony Hawk is pretty dead, Blizzard are in their own "When its done' bubble. If they kill CoD the Activision side of Activision Blizzard is going to be hurting, at least until the Bungie thing makes its way out and I think that will be a while and they can't pump that since Bungie owns it.

On a brighter note, I thin there is a decent chance of Black Ops being pretty solid. Treyarch has been getter better each time. Spider-man 2 is also one of my favorite PS2 games because they nailed that swing mechanic, every else was kind of shoddy but man that swing mechanic was awesome.

So when Activision said that that Infinity Ward (what's left of it) was still important, they lied?

I hope every other year when they don't put out a major Call of Duty that they put out Call of Duty Party featuring Mommy, Daddy, Billy and Sarah and everyone's favorite - Captain Price.

Do I think they should be? I don't think their business department cares what I think they should be doing.

Bit of a loaded question.

Treyarch staff are going to get burned out on Call of Duty if that's all they can make.  It seems Activision's hand corrupts anything it touches.  How long before employees start leaving the company?

Vince and Zampella left EA because they only worked on MoH games so they went to Activision to make CoD games. So then they got tired of doing that, wanted to do something else and Activision didn't want any of it so they left again. I can see the same happening again if all they're going to do is work on the same game over and over.

Since Infinity Ward has more or less gone down the shitter, I wouldn't be surprised that Treyarch would need to dedicate all their personnel to the Call of Duty franchise.

Treyarch is nothing more than an IP perpetuator completely incapable of fresh ideas. Giving them free will is as much of an option as shutting down the studio.
