You Will Have an Updated Mass Effect 3 Ending to Complain About Starting This Tuesday

The much ballyhooed "extended cut" will bring you more extrapolation on that ending you may or may not have forgotten you ever hated in the first place.

Something something Indoctrination Theory something something.
Something something Indoctrination Theory something something.

When was the last time you actually heard anyone complain about Mass Effect 3's ending? A month ago? Two months ago? While the rage from various segments of the Internet over what was perceived to be everything from a mere cop-out to an out-and-out slaughtering of a fiction some people were apparently extremely invested in was hot and heavy at the outset, it's not a subject people have talked too much about in recent weeks. It almost makes you wonder if BioWare might have been better suited just, I don't know, maybe riding the heat wave out before eventually, quietly just moving onto something else?

Instead, BioWare decided to go with this "extended cut" DLC, which will launch for free on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this Tuesday. This is the new-ish ending that will "expand upon the events at the end of Mass Effect 3" through "additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes." It will also "rekindle the burning fires of hatred throughout the Internet anew, as message board posters scramble to debate whether or not the new ending solves any of the perceived problems with the original, or just cocks up the works even worse than before." Okay, so BioWare didn't say that last part, but the subtext was there.

Not being too terribly invested in the adventures of Commander Shepard myself beyond a basic, casual enjoyment of the series, I've never quite understood the uproar over the ending. I mean, was it a great one? No, not really. Was it a bit careless, all things considered? Yeah, probably. Did it ruin any and all enjoyment I had of the series to date? Not really. But I'm not the sort to generally get too up-in-arms over these sorts of things, so I realize that my viewpoint may be skewed.

Still, I can't help but wonder exactly how much good this new ending will do. It's not a new ending, as many wanted, which basically just assures that the conversation which all but died a month or two ago is just going to get heated all over again. I guess we'll all see come this Tuesday.

i just want to know 1 example of what is so wrong with the ending to this game. a well thought out complaint all i have honestly heard is OMFG it ended and i dont like that.

at least they ended the story unlike some games like halo were they just keep making up random shit because it makes money really there is plenty of halo fan boys that would buy halo 10 the flash game for $100 bucks a pop.

all im saying is the ending is smart if you catch every word and detail.

this new free DLC ending will just be a a way to hold everyone's hand so everyone gets it

They would have been better off not doing this. I had done a good job forgetting about Magic Space Baby's Illogical Emporium. This just reminded me of how awful that whole mess was...

in a game about choices that matter, the ending was so generic as to make all your decisions meaningless.

Will it help Mass Effect 2 not feel irrelevant from the entire series despite being the best game? Probably not, so I'm not too worried about it.

@Shaanyboi: No it was mostly the finishing blow on a disappointing game. The game is good, but very disappointing.

I'm not going to argue against that the game wasn't what it should've been. Yeah, some of the mission structure was pretty disappointing, etc. But people act like it's this fucking abomination, and it murdered their mothers or something. Like... fucking really?

But at the same time, the majority of people on the internet can't critique for shit. Either something is "fucking incredible" or "the worst thing ever". Like nothing is allowed to be "okay", or "it's alright".

Already deleted the game, not wasting more bandwidth to get a slightly altered ending.

Never got around to playing 3, watched the ending on youtube to see what the fuss was about and I don't understand what's so wrong about it. I could see people being frustrated because their choices don't have enough impact, but what good does this DLC do?

You haven't seen A Logical Breakdown of Why the Mass Effect 3 Ending Makes No Sense?

There's plenty of famous youtube videos out there also explaining why, from a storytelling craft point of view, it blows. I'm sure people will link them.

Disclaimer: I don't endorse everything said in that document, or the youtube videos I mentioned. Just enough to make me hate the ending myself.

Why does Alex feel the need to turn every single news article he writes into a joke, along with making the title sarcastic. Its never funny. I'm not hating on the guy, it just makes him seem like a bad writer and a bad journalist, which I know he isn't.

I really enjoy Mass Effect 3, and I'm excited for this. Everything beside the somewhat meh fetch quests and the fact the ending didn't really feel like it concluded to anything important from a "Shepard's journey" standpoint, were fantastic to me.

dont even care anymore.

I expect this to be the sentiment. We're so far out now that people will just shrug and move on.

Bioware needed to realize that the damage had been done and that the whole thing would go away in time. But now they're picking at scabs.

I enjoyed the original ending but wished for a bit more clarification on a couple things so I imagine this will work out just fine for me. But it's not going to do a damn thing to people who hate the ending, and the people who merely disliked it are probably kind of over the game.

When Shepard finally confronts the maker of the Reapers, he asks why it destroys everything in the universe ever so many thousands of years. The answer he is given is: Machines will always rise up to destroy their creators, so we're going to make machines to destroy everything so that doesn't happen.

As a player, you are not allowed to question or press this hypocrisy of logic. Shepard simply accepts that this is the way things are. The ending might as well have been "Because God made it that way".

After that you have your choice of 3 different endings, all of which you can see running at the same time on youtube, all of which do pretty much the same exact thing.

You have to replay the last two missions. If you don't have a save before the last two missions, I think you're screwed.

There will be a segment of people who enjoy it. This will likely be the majority and you will hear very little from it. There will be a segment of people who don't enjoy it for various reasons they will likely articulate succinctly and well. This will likely be a large segment and you will hear very little from it. There will be a segment of people for whom no ending was ever going to be good enough, let alone any ending extension. The will likely throw around impossible ideas that are beyond the realm of feasibility, and the internet will CHOKE ON THEIR POST COUNTS.

You win, Undeadpool. I applaud you.

I have absolutely no interest in any opinion expressed by any of blizzards official forums, I'd rather have a discussion with a pit of rabid dogs. And User-reviews have and always will be the biggest goddamn joke of all.

Back on topic, sort of, it's better to extend that same mentality to the cacophony over at the Bioware Social.

If the ending of Game of Thrones (née A Song of Ice and Fire) were changed for the TV show to something that made no internal sense and offered no resolution, people would be upset. They would get over it, but it would ruin the enjoyment of the franchise for many people. I don't see how this is different, or why people should be derided for having this attitude about video games. Mass Effect is a franchise, after all.

It's this dismissive attitude that easily allows people to segregate video games into the "it's just for kids" art ghetto, were we've already stuck animation.

Yes, I know the ASoIaF books aren't finished, so there is no ending to ruin yet, and it's entirely likely that Martin will write a crap ending all by his lonesome that the TV show might well fix. It's just an analogy. Also, shut up.

Game was disappointing, the ending was terrible. I doubt this will solve all the logical inconsistencies. But more than that is the press reaction to fan outcry. Way to be bunch of condescending jerks and not even try to pretend to comprehend what people's issues with the ending were.

I think the condescension is sadly warranted. Sure there were a few genuinely good arguments among the grievances, positions that you could disagree with and still respect... but for the most part it all sounded like an army of angry seven year olds.

Look it up on Youtube. People have done 20 minute, even up to an hour and a half, explaining every detail that was bad. From Casey Hudson saying you would not have an ending in which you picked ABC (thats exactly what it was) to the completely ridiculous Reaper motivations. They're killing people to save them from synthetics. Synthetics killing human to save humans from being killed by synthetics. It really is amazing how bad the ending is when it's closely looked at.

I don't really understand why most people that hated the ending are now subjected to a label as "same old internet hates something so they're clearly crazy!" Is it really that hard to believe that people actually loved this franchise and were upset about an ending that ruined most of their enjoyment of he franchise as a whole? I never signed up for a petition or anything like that, but I wasn't happy with the ending or the game as a whole. I guess I'm one of the few that can control my anger well, but it seems unfair for our concern to be swept under the rug as another case of the internet being dumb. Perhaps I'm upset about how this article is written. Anyway, I'll check this dlc ending out, but it won't fix any of the other issues that Mass Effect 3 had which aren't the ending.

Because there is a difference between saying "I didn't think the ending was good, you guys really dropped the ball on that one, and i'm unlikely to buy your next game." to suing the company, harassing writers on twitter, reporting it to the BBB and the overall amazing vitriol that was getting spewed left and right.

You kind of forget that it quieted down because they announced they were working on this DLC, Alex. No sense continuing to cause a stink when things are going your way, right? Everyone opted to just wait and see.

Edit: Of course, any post by Bioware on facebook is still about 30-50% comments about the ending, and Bioware still has comments on their blog turned off. So that's a thing.

Even as a Mass Effect fan, I don't really care anymore. Enough time has passed and enough complaints have been made that I have just moved on. It may have sucked but any complaints of mine about the ending have kinda cooled off in the months since
