I tried. And I was able to avoid all spoilers for Bioshock until the day I would pick it back up again.

I played it in 2010. I played only up to the dentist level and I thought the gameplay was mediocre at best; no matter how much I wanted to explore the world and experience the twist, I just didn't find it fun enough to pull myself through. That was also partly because of my huge shooter fatigue I have that carried on until now and still going (I haven't even finished Syndicate, Singularity, and Black Ops 2). But I swore one day I would pick it back up to get to the famous plot twist. I deliberately avoided reading anything about Bioshock. (Also doing so for Infinite) Well, even meeting Andrew Ryan was enough a spoiler for me, which the scene of course showed up in many gaming's top 10 lists that I have read. I really wanted to experience it myself. I was able to keep that up for 2 years...

And then Brad just casually spout it out loud in this week's bombcast. It sounded really dumb without context, but still, that thought is going to be on my mind when I ever try to play Bioshock again. Even if the thing he was talking about clearly would lead to a spoiler, I really didn't expect he would say it. He did.

I just recently reinstalled Bioshock just so to go through it and play Infinite. Now I don't know how many more years would it take for me to want to pick Bioshock up again...

What Brad isn't the famous plot twist. Though it's kind of tough to believe that you've been able to avoid THE twist for this long.

There was quite a lot of build up to the point where they basically talk about the ending. It was easy to see it coming unless you were half paying attention.

Speaking of which... Bioshock 1 and 2 (together) are 5 bucks on Gamefly. I bought it then realized I can't put them on Steam and have to use some Gamefly client to play them... that sucks.

I'm currently playing through it for the first time but I didn't really mind the spoilers. You (and I) can still experience it for yourself, the "oh shit wasn't expecting that" is hardly all there is to it.

i don't mean to be snobby about it- but on a video game enthusiast website...one would think you'd have played one of the landmark releases of this (just about finished) gen. i mean, i suppose it's only 5 years. BUT FIVE YEARS. that's a whole hardware-life-cycle by traditional standards.

i mean, there are plenty of landmark games i've missed as well. but i'm not surprised when i'm aware of most of the major plot points by the time i get to them. can't fight osmosis forever.

I'd say it's your own bloody fault, it's an old game now, plus you could tell Brad was winding up to bringing up the twist. It's probably the best twist of this generation, you can't really hold off bringing it up.

Eh, if you choose not to play a game for half a decade after it was released then you've pretty much spoiled it for yourself.

I didn't play through Bioshock 1 or 2 until after I'd played Infinite. I was fully aware of the various plot twists in those games and it didn't really hurt the experience (the crappy combat in 1 and the shitty writing in 2 did more to shape my opinions.)

Bioshock's a good and important game and alI, but it's not that great of a twist.

And it's not always bad to play a game while knowing a twist. Bioshock Infinite for example... a lot of those voxphone recordings make little to no sense in the context you have while playing the game through the first time. But once you know the ending they have way more meaning and they feel worth listening to as opposed to feeling like I'm just picking these things up to get an achievement because I don't understand what they are saying right now.

I'm in the same boat, totally blacked out about Bioshock, except as soon as they started talking about the first one I just fast forwarded like 10 minutes of the cast. Trying to stay in the dark about stuff that is so popular for so long requires a lot of work, you gotta be on your toes man!

I get the impression some people in the thread think that once a game has been out for a while, anyone who has any business caring about the plot should have already played it. If you said the same thing about films you'd be called an idiot (more often). I think it's unreasonable to expect spoiler-free discussion on a game that's a few years old, especially when discussing a sequel. Then again it's good etiquette to let people know you are about to divulge potential spoilers, regardless of the length of time that has passed since release.

Eh... Brad spoiled BioShock for me too, but it's been out for a long time, so I don't mind. It was more annoying that Patrick wanted Jeff to spoil a game that was barely out. Might not be a great game, but still not cool to want to spoil a new game. Good on Jeff for refusing.

What Brad "spoiled" on the bombcast wasn't the twist. He talked about some plot points that happen, but not the actual important part of the story.

I never finished Bioshock because it's a shitty game in my opinion. I heard Brad's spoiler and I still don't know what happened at the end of Bioshock because it's a shit game.

In the end it turns out Bioshock is just a parable for the Falklands War.

I've taken the stance of pretty much not caring if I notice a spoiler for a video game. I'll still enjoy the game if it really is a good game even knowing something about the story.
