Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, lived in ancient India during the 6th to 5th centuries BCE. Despite being founded in the Indian subcontinent (South Asia), the religion is today far more widely practiced in Eastern and Southeastern Asia.
In Sid Meier's Civilization IV, the player can 'found' Buddhism by being the first nation to research the meditation technology.
