Old Consoles to Get Multiplayer-Only Version of Black Ops III
i actually just tried to play Advanced Warfare on PS3 yesterday only to find the game completely dead, not even a single TDM going on, so I kinda wonder how well a multiplayer only thing would do on that console at this point.
There are about 32k players on AW for PS3 at the moment. Almost 29k on 360. The percentage of those players who are hackers/cheaters is anyone's guess.
What modes are they playing? I can't find any "Current players" like the older games had, and I'm still getting "no games found" for every playlist but ranked matches. I tried both with wired and wireless Internet figuring something like that could mess something up, but it made no difference, and it did show "one potential match" in ranked, but which it couldn't join. Literally every other playlist says there aren't any matches going on.
Should definitely be cheaper, but people on older consoles should be thankful they're getting a game at all. I only own a PS3 and my expectation at this point is no new games will release for it.
@basketsnake: We fly high, no lie.
If there's anything new I learnt from this article, it's that there's a PS3/360 version of Black Ops III.

It's not like they removed the campaign to push people to buy new systems. Apparently they had limitations with the new campaign, these supposed poor people at least still get something new. Activision could have just scrapped the old generation versions.
@liquidsnakegfer9: How is wanting the full experience on the console they own being "entitled"? It's not like previous console owners are getting a big discount for half of the game not being there.
Honestly, they should have just canceled the PS3/360 versions. It's not like Activision cares what people think after they get their cash anyways. Especially since there are hilariously overpriced collector's editions for the current gen versions of BO3 (Including one that comes with a damn fridge) that will make up any they lose from not selling on the PS3/360.
I am a little surprised about the way they did this. I had actually always hoped that the multiplayer would be separate, but considering their track record, there is no way the publisher would sell it for less than sixty bucks. They never even brought that free to play CoD online over here...probably for that very reason (Money, obviously).
I'd buy that for $10.
I'm one of those weirdos who thinks CoD MP is a bit pants but can recognize and appreciate the entertainment value of a big dumb action spectacle. But I haven't bought a CoD since Modern Warfare since they don't go down in price until the next one's announced and makes the old one seem naff.
Dumping old tech is inevitably necessary for progress. You can't really criticize Activision for doing that. The question is if customers will agree with Activision that $50 for MP only, plus some old game they've probably already played, is a good value. I'd probably argue for future DLC to be included, rather than this old junk Activision found in the corner of the basement.
Shame EA didn't go this route with Battlefront.
Battlefields were traditionally MP only, but had the value to back it up. Not so convinced by Battlefront and its 12 maps exclusive to specific modes. Spreading out your stuffs across all these modes in an attempt to appeal to as many people as possible, I think might make some people less than content with the amount of maps playable in their preferred mode. Feels like EA's relying too much on the power of branding to sell this thing, in lieu of actual value. Of course I don't actually know yet. Just quite skeptical if the value will match the price.
It "is" what it "is", nothing to be overjoyed about, and yet you can't fault them too much for a sober decision about what to focus on.
Want to play a campaign? Go play CoD 4: Modern Warfare, it worth another run all these years later.
i would love if they´d sell a cheap singe player stand alone version (on ps4/xb1)
the campaigns are the only thing i usually play in cod. but i´ll never pay 60€ for that.
i usually rent or borrow them.
Last night at Toys-R-Us I saw a printed out sign that said "The Wii version of Skylanders Superchargers does not include the full game, only racing." I'm sure there will be a few of those signs around when this game launches.
Also, I'm not sure why people are interpreting this article as Jeff ripping on people with old consoles? He pointed out an assumption that he had (we all have those) and then posted some comments that proved his assumption wrong. It doesn't seem like a dig at people at all.

considering the wii is basically a ps2 thats actaully pretty impressive they are still supporting it. must still make some money for them
@neozeon: Why in god's name would canceling the games altogether be a better solution? You'd rather get no game than a gimped game? That makes absolutely zero sense.
Overall this doesn't bother me. Sure it'd be sweeter if it was say $40, but any discount is appreciated, especially when you consider how many people have always payed $60 and only ever played multiplayer anyways. The new consoles have been out for two years now - I just appreciate the fact they bothered releasing an old version at all.
@fisk0: Yep. Although I'm sure out of all the companies Activision will be one of the ones along with EA that still hold on to putting out cross gen versions of nearly everything. I'm glad most studios are over that. I feel more often than not that has really held back some current gen releases.
@bradbrains: Yeah it's wild! I've actually heard the Wii version is fun, it's more like a Mario Kart game. I'm sure Toysrus must have had some complaints to make a sign about it. Ha-ha!
@nime: Sorry, I should have phrased that better. I meant that it seems pretty messed up of them to release half the game and only give a ten dollars discount. Seems like Activision spitting in the previous generation owner's face at that point.
It was a little harsh to say there shouldn't be anything at all. Guess the barely discount rubbed me the wrong way.
So the Multiplayer is worth $50 and the SP is worth $10? Can I just pay $10 and get the campaign on PS4?
Ditto.
I stopped buying COD after the first Black Ops because all I ever do is play campaign and it is seriously not worth it for 60 bucks. I told myself I'd wait until the newer ones come out and just play the old campaigns when they drop the price, but they never drop it far enough to make me feel good about the investment.
The original Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 are still $40 on Steam, and Blops 2 and Ghosts are both still $60!
And they very rarely go on sale (and when they do, it's not for that much)
COD campaigns for 10 bucks sure. Make it happen Activision !
No freaking kidding. The campaigns are the only thing I played in CoD anyway.

If they put out a compilation of just the Modern Warfare/Black Ops Campaigns at a correspondingly reasonable price, I'd snap stuff that right up.
I stopped buying CoDs after MW2 but I wouldn't mind playing through the stories I missed some time (rather than the alternative of passively watching them on video). This late on, the multiplayer components of those older outings would basically be pointless anyway.
I don't think anyone ever goes to a developer's forums to talk about how much they like a game. Also, having spent a fair amount of time looking at internet comments, I don't know if I'd trust anyone who ever writes anything on any website, ever.
Except this one, obviously. You're welcome.
Probably an unpopular view point but i'm kind of sick of all games i get on ps4/x1 not being as good as they could have been because people are still refusing to upgrade to the next set of consoles. This isnt a new idea, people have been upgrading their machines every generation for as long as i can remember so why its such a sticking point now i dont know. Just imagine how amazing Metal Gear could have been if it hadnt been stuck catering for last gen machines, could have been a bloody master piece!
"whats next old gen wont get a box?"
If it was any other series (except maybe annual sports game) it wouldnt even warrant a release. Teams that aren't as ridiculously big as CoD can't afford to try and shove games onto those old platforms. PS4/XBO adoption rates are way higher than PS3/360 cause back then we all had to buy HDTVs so the financial cost was much more than $400 for the system.

Oh, ok!

It is a masterpiece.

Long story short, this issue is caused by fragmentation in the player base due to differences in DLC ownership. People who have no DLC for the game, or only two out of the four packs, or who don't own the Atlas Gorge map, etc are going to have a hard time finding matches. It sucks but it's part of the business realities of Call of Duty. It would be cool if they just let everybody have all the maps once the new one comes out, but I don't see that happening :/

I have the season pass and to my knowledge have installed all the DLC's (though the game only lists them as purchased, there's no indication of if they're installed or not).
Combat readiness is the only mode that gets me into matches, but that's the mode that adds bots if it can't find enough players, and I don't think I have seen more than 3 or 4 players that behave humanlike in a match there either, and it still takes a good 6-7 minutes to even find a game.
I'm not one to enjoy the misery of others...but some part of me is still hoping to see bunch of complaning this week from people who'll be surprised to only find the multiplayer mode from their 360/PS3 copies. I'm assuming they are going to plant a very clear notification on the back of the physical box to avoid that.
@glottery: I think more last-gen users will be more frustrated with what the game looks like on their systems. There have been a few videos floating around of the Black Ops 3 multiplayer for the old consoles and it looks horrific. I haven't fired up an old Call of Duty game on a last-gen console in a long time but it looks much worse than I remember any of the other PS3/360 CoD games looking like before. Although this is ahead of release and things could hypothetically change maybe?
I think I read somewhere that it would also only run at 30 FPS compared to the regular 60 that the current-gen versions will run at.
So it turns out that the 360 version is a bit "lacking in fidelity", to put it mildly. It's especially noticeable in comparison to the original Black Ops that is bundled with the game.

To put it less mildly: It looks like it was ported by the fucking Tony Hawk 5 team.
