So, do we, as an Internet, owe Michael Pachter an apology for doubting him?We should send him a dollar. Those ties don't iron themselves.
Call of Duty Elite
Concept »
Elite was an out-of-game service that allows Call of Duty players to "connect, compete, and improve."
Can A Website Make You Better At Headshots?
Weird, is anybody really that interested to find out how well their friends are doing? I can't remember the last time I even looked at a leaderboard, let alone bungie.net
I wasn't really inclined to get CODMW3 before and this hasn't budged me...
Also this guy was incredibly funny, as in funny stupid not funny har har.
The narrator of the promo vid is fucking awesome. Can he please please please be a big part of the final game???
That video is like a terrible machinima and gamestop ad
Of the comparison to Netflix at 7.99 holds they aren't getting my money for years worth of this it would cost roughly 95 bucks. COD map packs if they release 3 in a year would just be $45.
The free stuff sounds interesting there making a new centralized hub good for them but how will they get people to pay for it.
Youtube exists for watching machinima and gameplay video
The appstore already has loads of stat tracking apps for call of duty
The game gives you stats about maps and weapons
What is the point of this! This is a waste of time! Yes I have signed up for the Beta! Poor Beach Head
Worth pointing out that battlefield 2 did this way back in 2005 pretty perfectly. They even released the info to the public so that a bunch of different stat sites emerged that used your data in different ways.
Here's some clarification about this service if anyone still has some questions
The most important thing for me "COD Elite is NOT going to sell players competitive advantages with microtransactions"
For anyone who missed the Wall Street Journal article that broke this news (how telling is it that Activision's dealings are being reported first by business publications and not gaming ones?), the supposedly "comparable" service that Elite's price will be based on is Netflix, at $8/month.
Anyone with more than 4 brain cells can obviously figure out that those services are not actually comparable...
As I said in the forum thread yesterday, it's probably irrational but this doesn't sit well with me in terms of its potential to shape the direction of the wider industry. Then again, if it causes a bunch of Internet drama I could see EA/DICE capitalizing on that drama the same way they did with BC2 and dedicated servers - offering a similar service for free to further drum up the CoD 'vs' Battlefield ridiculousness.
Would it be possible for Activision to offer selling "leveling up" bonuses or buying access to weapons earlier? So far, it looks like a no on that front, but I do agree with you that that type of information may be kept under wraps for now.
And credit goes where it's due: Michael Pachter has been predicting a Call of Duty subscription service for a while now. Everyone loves to give him shit when he's wrong, but here he called it.Were there really a lot of people that disagreed with him though? I think everyone expected it at some point after Kotick came out and said they were interested in making more money off of COD.
...until they realize that no one is subscribing and try to get people to lay money down.

It's about freakin' time COD caught up to everything Bungie is doing. Since I'll be buying MW3 for Campaign and Spec-Ops mode and will simply play MP from time to time for the lulz, I won't be buying this, but I have to say, that video was pretty damn funny.

This is going to be a huge success. For the average, stoned COD player they'll love the idea of this, despite the fact that Bungie already does this for free with Halo.
It just occurred to me that they may try to charge for this on PC as well. And THAT is funny, since steam does all these announced things for free so far other than map packs (and depending on developer, those are free as well), and stat tracking is available in some form for most good FPSes for free already.
OK so off topic from the Elite thing...that was the best video ever made from any game. It was amazing! And the MW3 thing at the end was great. But on to the Elite thing. I think that since it's completely optional, and not a subscription to PLAY THE GAME like we though..it may actually work. We'll see how much they want for it first
Remember the days when you could buy a game and own all of it forever? Hell, you didn't even have to buy it. 'Borrow' your friend's copy and forget to give it back and you got the entire experience. I love the additional content but I need to start making more money if I want to keep up.
As someone who plays Black Ops way too much (Rank 50, Prestige 15)...I have no interest in this service at all. This isn't worth paying for.
Jesus, did they make that logo with elements 3? That is hideously ugly...
Besides that, this just seems like a total rip off. As someone who has friends that are pretty good at most games I've ever wanted to get into and I can just spend a few hours playing with them to pick up the important skills I need through tutoring, which would be a million times more personalized and effective and I'd get a hell of a lot more enjoyment playing with the guys vs reading how I'm bad at head shots or that I need to shoot, THEN sight in. And somehow I doubt it'll even get so in depth as to be able to tell that last one.
Won't personally sign up for this, but curious to hear how the final product ends up. I like the CoD games, but I never play enough multiplayer to make this worthwhile.
Thank god companies like Valve exist, so there's still not bad companies making dumb decisions to charge customers for something that should be free.Yeah those hats are totally worth it.
I get it that they are trying to expand their whole "group" communication by adding this feature but didn't Halo already do this?Plus it was a free service along with that they had theather mode which I don't see why it took COD so long to jump on that train doesn't seem like a hard feature to include.I wish they would focus on something new instead of what their competetitors already accomplished.Next thing their include will be destructible enviroments and drivable vehicles jajaja that would be funny.
IT'S LIKE ORGANIZED SPORTS IF ORGANIZED SPORTS HAD ORGANIZED SPORTS
I like how the narrator in the video gets spawn-killed a whole lot. Lets everyone know how quality a game this is.
