So we've been talking about site performance a bit lately and we've been kicking around some ideas on how to speed everything on the site up. We have already gone through and made a ton of performance tweaks with our sql queries across a lot of the major pages - and although we're not using memcached as aggressively as we could be, this isn't where we seeing a ton of our performance issues.

What we noticed is that the media on the site is the main performance dragging culprit. Since we serve a very robust site with a bunch of inline wiki editing tools, custom forums and image functionality there is a ton of site-specific CSS and Javascript powering everything..... these are the files that are needed for pages to render and these files are large. So, last night we completed phase I of our performance enhancement by adding a new step to our media deployment script. We're now crunching all of these large js/css files during deployment to our prod boxes.

We pushed GiantBomb last night and we immediately noticed a pretty significant improvement in performance here at the office.

Does the site seem faster to you?

A few days ago the site was dragging its heels to load for me. It was really slow and I think it went down a few times for not only me but others as well. Site seems a helluva lot faster today compared to what its been like this past few days.

Like Hamz, the site was a bit draggish for a few days.  It is much faster now, though.  Good job, coonce!

I haven't really noticed any difference, but that's probably more due to me not being very observant than there not being a change.

I have noticed the past couple of days that the site was becoming really slow and taking a while to load. Today it seems like pages load faster. Thanks for the update and the performance upgrade coonce..

I have noticed that today is much faster than it was yesterday. I always assumed it was just my dodgy internet connection, but I guess not. Good work all round.

Is that why my browser has been crashing lately?

I keed I keed but in all seriousness I do think that pages are loading a little faster.  Does it affect guides? Guides seem to be loading a lot quicker?  Could just be my imagination

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Also, the site seems faster than ever.

It does seem faster, but I'm having some problems with the image uploader, which I assume you just changed as well?
