if you can deal with the well documented quirks of the dead rising series you should have a good time with it.

Dead Rising is for men.  You have to play it like a man.  Are you prepared for this?  If not, never look at or think about Dead Rising ever again.

The halfway point. An inherent appreciation of this game's specific gameplay style, characters, subject matter, and so on may play as big a role in your enjoyment as the actual quality of the game.

As you can see by the explanation of the rating, some might find it fun and some might not. Personally I love it, it's an oddly satisfying game.  The quirks don't break the games and the psychopaths, while hard, arn't frustratingly annoying.

If you really want an answer to that question play Case 0, if you like that then youll love Dead Rising 2.  Personally i love the game and i am currently having a lot of fun working through it, sure its a little on the unforgiving side but ironically thats part of its charm.

A good idea would be to try the game out first, preferably 1 hour or 2 at a friends house or something. So you can get a feel of the Dead Rising controls and all that.

I found the first one a chore and I bought this one with the hope that they fixed the issues - some of them they did but I am starting to get buyers regret.

Ugh... People now days are spoiled by the game rankings.

If you like zombies and like the idea of the game and see a grade of 3/5 (6/10), then you should buy the game and support their work. A 6/10 is above average, it's qualified as a "Good" game. I think you should reconsider it if it got a 4/10 or something.

Precisely what I was thinking too.
I enjoyed the game before they reviewed it and I knew I was going to enjoy it as soon as I pre-ordered it.

If you like this kind of game, give it a chance. I have no clue if you'll like it or not but in my opinion it's a enjoyable game.

if you like zombies and if you liked DR 1 than yes you should buy this. If you never played DR 1 but enjoy some of the weirdness that come with japanese publishes games then yes buy it. If you enjoy being hardcore about your video games and being punished for not doing things right then guess what this game is for you :)

For me, it seems way to much like a carbon copy of the first one to warrant a $60 purchase.  It also might have something to do with me having played a shitload of Dead Rising recently and not really wanting to play something so similar just yet.  Either way, it's up to you.  Do you absolutely love everything about the original game and want more of the same?  Then get this.  Otherwise, there's a shitload of other stuff coming out soon that is a better use of your money, including one that also takes place in a messed up version of Vegas.

Did you actually read it though? Jeff kind of endorses the game with a lot of conditions attached to it. He does explain what kind of person will enjoy this. I think if you aren't too fussed about just failing the story then ignoring it to go out, kill zombies, explore and level up you'll be fine. If you want to just play it from start to end then no.

If you loved the first Dead RIsing go for it.  Otherwise, I'd give it a pass.  I initially liked the first game but got burned out of it quickly.  The shitty save system and open sandbox world giving me too much to do distracted me easily, and had me not following the story at all. Never had the desire to pick it up again, so probably won't ever play the sequel which looks to be more of the same. I prefer the Left 4 Dead series.

It's fucked up that game reviewing has got to a point where a game can be called 'actually awesome' in the blurb and then 3-starred.  I totally understand and appreciate why Jeff has felt obliged to score it like that, it's just fucked that this is how it works.  'Divisive' is not the same as 'mediocre', but that's how it comes across with the current approach.  A divisive game should be evidenced by a healthy spread in review scores from different sources, not by each individual reviewer giving it a mediocre score - this is why we have ended up with games all homogenizing towards the same point.

Game reviewing shouldn't be a science.  If a reviewer finds a game "awesome" despite the problems, then they should be free to score it as such, rather than having to second-guess what their audience as a whole will think about it.  We've ended up with a scoring system which - whilst giving an appropriate reflection of what the audience as a whole might think of it - isn't useful to any individual within the audience (such as the OP) and doesn't even accurately reflect the reviewer's own opinion of the game.  Game reviews need to get back to being exclusively about what the reviewer thinks, not what the reviewer thinks the mythical average audience member will think.  The byline should mean something.

If you believe you can look past the 'issues' and still find it awesome - as Jeff did - then of course you should buy it.

Should you buy it for 39 bucks with a few coins of change?
Could you buy this game while it only gets 3 stars?
Should you buy this game when Kingdom Hearts gets no more than 2 stars.

I think games should be rated on a technical scale, for things like graphics and sound and control, but also be given another rating for the overall enjoyability of the game.  While it complicate the decision for some, I think it accurately reflects that some games have a low production quality but end up being excellent games.

That being said, as one of the first responders to this thread already wrote, if you don't mind the quirks of the Dead Rising games, you will thoroughly enjoy this one.  Last night, playing co-op, seeing a grown man in a ninja outfit riding a child's tricycle through a mass of zombies was worth the tears and laughter that followed.

DR2 is packed with more zombies and crazy ass weapons. It still stays true to the first DR's game play style. Escort missions might get repetitive but there's so much to do on the way to and from the safe house while rescuing survivors. You just have to multi-task. It's not for everyone. It can be stressful. Save often and keep trying new ways to kill zombies. It's a riot. The online arena is a nice addition. I've been having more fun than I expected so far. No buyers remorse here. I haven't tried the co-op yet. Looking forward to that.

Yes. Jesus don't let GB's review turn you off. It's a brilliant game, honestly. If you enjoyed the first in any small way then you are 100% bound to enjoy this game. If you're still unsure give Case Zero a spin, then picture that, in a way cooler setting with 100's more weapons, psychos, and a kickass story to boot.

3 stars isn't that bad. Brutal legend was also a 3 star-game that had flaws, but I looked past it's shortcomings and enjoyed the hell out of it.
I guess Jeff got a little disapointed seeing as he liked the original for it's mad japanese antics(which was apparent in the last 3-4 podcasts)

@Jimbo:   You make a good point, but for some areas of the game Jeff said he just wasn't having fun.  I think he meant the weapon building part was awesome, but the rest of the game is kinda clunky.  I got the impression that everything that surrounds the crazy weapons and zombie killing was mediocre and outdated, like the boss battles, inventory system, multiplayer mini games, firearm control, story, timed missions, and the tacked on co-op (although it's still better than having no co-op at all).  After reading his review though, and seeing the gametrailers review (which was like an 8.1 or something) I just bought the game now on Steam.  So I don't know man, gametrailers gave it 8, IGN even gave it an 8.  There's reviewers out there who are enjoying it, but Jeff apparently didn't find it awesome enough to give it another star.

It's pretty awesome! I do enjoy that each run through the game requires a different approach to accomplish things. Do I save survivors and progress the story or just go for the 70,000 zombie achievement?

seriously buy dead rising case zero. Its 5 bucks and a way to see if you would like it. If you dont have a 360 then ummm..... watch some gameplay footage like the quicklook and see if it looks fun. Read the review but ignore the score.
