Power Moves (SNES version of Deadly Moves)

I don't think the guys here at Giant Bomb even use half stars, but let me be one of the first to grace this new page with a half star review. All that I can say about this game is, "Wow." Just wow. This game has got to be the absolute worst fighting game I have ever played on any platform. And I'll admit, maybe there were a couple horrible classics that I missed due to me being so young, but man. This game is just downright disgraceful to games like Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting or even Battle Arena Toshinden.

First off, the story mode has only one playable character that goes by the generic name of Joe. Really? Joe? Some people aren't very creative, but come on. Anyone with a brain can muster up some kind of ridiculous name for the main character. There is a V.S. mode, which does offer more characters, but they are all cheap Malt-O-Meal rip-offs of characters from other fighting games. Anyway, besides that there's the pitiful combat. And since it's a fighting game, what is there left to be excited about? The combat seems way too slow and sloppy to me. There are some special moves, but again most of them are just ripped from other characters in other, better fighting games.

Oh wait, I forgot about the RPG elements during the story mode. You can level your single character (only Joe is available to play) up as you progress. Man, these guys... they were ahead of their time on that one, huh? It's too bad they didn't focus on making a decent fighting game rather than adding stats to a genre that really doesn't need them. Awesome, Kaneko. I applaud you. Seriously though, at the end of the day, don't waste your time on this version of the game (and I'm guessing the other one too). And I would have given it no stars, but this game is holding up my Star Fox cart, and maybe even then I'm giving it more credit than it deserves.
