That raid wasn't just my first Destiny raid but also my first raid experience in any MMO style game ever. And holy shit.

Going in I was hopeful that it'd take around 3~5 hours. 5 hours being if things went sideways. What actually happened was... well... I canceled dinner plans and ended up with a headache and feeling pukey due to playing a game for the first time in over a decade. (Oculus rift gives me the spins but doesn't make me want to vomit)

Even with that being the case. That was fucking dope.

Prior to TK I'd only played vanilla Destiny and in it, only to the completion of the story. I then stopped completely till TK at which point, I played thru the story and ground a lil bit to hit 290 light so I could join the raid. I've heard a lotta gripes about Destiny and I understand them but I genuinely enjoyed everything I've played of it. Probably because I didn't play it in excess and I've never cared about gear much. The shooting feels great and the game is pretty so it did what I was looking for.

The raid was the single best team PVE experience I've ever had and the game also felt like something completely different from all the Destiny I'd played before it. The weakest part of the whole thing (besides kinda shitty loot) was definitely the platforming but I mean that it's weak relative to everything else which was amazing. The punishment for missing jumps wasn't that bad and the jumping felt perfectly fine. Maybe even good. It felt good.

There was a real adrenaline pumping, heart racing thrill to some of those boss fights that I haven't felt since I was a kid. And the thrill I felt when we beat the bosses was on a whole nother level. It was joyous. I totally get why people would be way into these things. Tho like, I would NEVER want to go into something like this blind. That's just insane and torturous. Also, I will never do it again. Since I'm pretty whatever on the loot side of the game and it's such a huge time commitment, I don't see myself ever coming back to this particular raid. Tho if there's one in Destiny Year 3... I might actually try to get some people together to check it out =]

It's always super interesting seeing people that have never done raiding of any kind seeing this sort of thing for the first time - both you and also many in the chat. For all the headaches it causes, there is definitely something to it. Downing a boss for the first time really is unlike anything else in gaming.

I remember having a similar high and crash after my first raid. It's definitely a unique experience if you've never played real MMORPGS before. I also similarly remember bad loot and apart from the fun part of besting a challenge with a fun group of friends clearly thinking "man that was not worth the time we put into it" which was a feeling that followed me around until I eventually decided to stop playing.

Taken King and all the praise sort of had me itching to get back in it and seeing the raid ironically had the opposite effect. I'm glad I watched most of it because it's like I was vicariously able to get it out of my system. Those can be fun times especially with the right people but man do I not want to dedicate that much time into a single activity ever again.

Yea, I definitely think it would have been just as enjoyable on my part even if it only lasted 3 or 4 hours rather than the almost 7...

I've played a lot of the bigger MMORPGs starting with EQ all the way through FFXIV but never did any big group stuff beyond some smaller instance dungeons. Those were always fun just because it was a good way to be social with my friends while playing a dumb game in the background. And yea, main reason I prob won't do this again is because it's such a time investment. Tho I don't regret doing it this once =]

You did really great under pressure. The only downside was that those of us in chat did not have "chat fobwashed" churning out GIFs for our enjoyment during the stream.

@fobwashed: It's specifically the part where you literally have to start cancelling dinner plans and reserving 5+ hours of your time for a video game that kind of burned me out after a while. It was this huge commitment to keep up with the group, whose every member had all three classes fully leveled up and ran every event on each and every one of them.

This happens to me in every MMO. I just am not the type to commit so much time to a single game. I like to play a lot of different stuff, and watch TV and movies and read and play music and stuff. I definitely was that person for a few years while playing World of Warcraft, but with Destiny I'm happy to play the raid once or twice a month and just have a more laid back attitude. I also have some serious school obligations so I'm normally looking for a not so intense experience during my recreational time. Luckily I have a really awesome and understanding pack of friends on the PS4 who I can jump into a raid or nightfall with every once in a while and they help bring me up to speed on mechanics.

As someone who's never truly gotten into MMO(ish) games this seems like it'd be waaaay too high stress for me. I don't have enough available friends to do something like this with, and any randoms I'd play with would just get royally pissed off at me. It also seems to be stradling the line of what I would consider fun (just because of what's expected of you, it's like you even fuck up once and that's IT).

@fobwashed unless you have no desire to play the game anymore, don't wait until year 3. Going through the raid a second time will be faster smoother and you will for sure see better loot.

Also people who get pissed off about someone making a mistake in video game need to fuck off, i don't care if add's 2 minutes or 2 hours to what your doing its a game and its for fun, so don't let asshats like that discourage you.

I watched it live for the first 4 hours, but by then it was midnight and I had to go to bed. I will definitely be watching the end when the archive goes up.

I play a lot of destiny but I don't know anyone who has it so I've never done a single raid, watching this and GB's vault of glass it looks like its too much of a time sink and overall stress for me if I'm honest

@fobwashed: What do you feel now, it's what I feel when I finish the Vault of glass for the first time, many days and ours later I get tired about this game, same mechanics over and over again, and really, the game now it's not to much different from vanilla Destiny, they only added more things to do, that is all.

You picked a good group it seems for your first Destiny raid experience. Little risky with the whole it being live streamed thing since the internet is what it is...but all in all I think you did well. I watched the stream from start to end...and yeah I can see why it made you feel sick. Sitting for that long, being super focused for that long....with limited breaks...is not fun for the body.

ANYWHO! Good job dude! You did it! Now go take something for the nausea and get the heck away from pc and consoles and rest. *thumbs up*

Hell yeah. You haven't raided properly until you've put off at least several other things you should have done and ignored sleep/food or both for hours on end. For real though, glad you had fun. Being in a tight knit group like that and finally overcoming what seem like impossible odds is always amazing. Clearing Turn 9 in Coil of Bahamut in FFXIV is one of my favorite moments by far in video games period.

@fobwashed You guys killed it! I've never experienced a raid myself but now i'm getting hyped when I finally hit enough light to do it. I'm ready to feel all the raid feels :)

Yea, I had friends that were way into MMORPGs and raiding. It was pretty much a second job for them. I stuck it out because I knew if I stopped, I'd never come back to it. Also, it was being streamed so it'd be pretty shitty to drop. Especially after we lost someone already.

Yea, it was kinda stressful but everyone playing was cool people so nobody seemed to lose their cool when shit went bad.

Yea definitely! It was a blast playing with that group. It mighta been a little funner and looser if it weren't being streamed but on the flipside, if it weren't being streamed, I woulda tapped out before finishing. I'm happy we finished.
