Doom: Still One Hell of a Ride
Actually the PS3 version Off the Doom 3: BFG Edition
I was 4 when this game first came out so I have never really played Doom the way it should've been played. Usually it consisted of spurts every once in a while when I visit family or friends. So with the announcement of the BFG Edition containing all 3 Doom games I jumped at the opportunity to finally play the Father of the FPS Genre and to say the least it is still a hell of a lot of fun.
First thing that comes to mind is that few games today are still as satisfying as the combat in this game. Being able to dodge several fireballs as you pump some shotgun shells into a Cacodemon, as the last shell enters the enemy it turns it into complete mush. The action has obviously aged but it is such a different experience compared to shooters we have today that it basically stands the test of time. Escaping a battle with a Baron of Hell unharmed brings a sense of pride that few games today have instilled in me.
The game's weakest point, and most people agree, is the level design. The early levels are pretty easy and straight foreword but since the combat is enjoyable that you really don't notice. But once you hit Episode 2 you start to notice the poor design to say the least. Some levels are just poorly laid out, the map is no help at all and once you spend 20 minutes running around a level trying to figure out what you were supposed to do, you just look the level up on youtube and say f**k it. It's disappointing to say the least and extremely frustrating to run around a empty level.
Even with it's flaws it is still a lot fun to play and at some point everyone should play this game to appreciate where we were and how far we have come.
Positives: Action is still a blast and very satisfying, 3-5 hours to playthrough depending on skill, classic and monumental game that is important landmark in the history of video games
Negatives: Poor level design that can be tedious to completely frustrating, little to no story arc but that's not why you play these games
