Dragon Age: Origins is an epic fantasy role-playing game featuring a rich story, personality-driven characters, and tactical, bloody combat. It is considered a spiritual successor to the Baldur's Gate series.
I've beaten it 3 times ask me anything
I just completed the game myself for the first time.
But I was wondering what was your favourite class/species? and your favourite people to use?
@XxHugeBuddhaxX: I know that the question is intended for the TP, but I'll answer it as well. My favorite classes are always Human Warriors or Elf Rogues. When you are thinking about parties remember that this game is a traditional rpg so focus and build upon that. One thing I would recommend is get Wynne as soon as possible so that you have a healer right off the bat. Also a good party is Alistair as Tank, Lelianna as a Ranger, Morrigan as a caster, and Wynne as the healer. You could also substitute yourself for whichever role you fit into. Another good party would be the traditional party of a Tank, Rogue, Caster, and Healer, but I found the previous party more effective and it helped me whoop the Dragon's ass when I was doing the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest. That way you have the tank attacking and having the dragon focus on him the whole time and you also have Lelianna attacking from a distance as well as Morrigan who really fucks them up if you choose the right spells and you have Wynne constantly healing the tank so no one is actually taking any damage. Also set their tactics too, that helps a bunch. I also beat the game three times and am waiting for my new gaming PC to come so that I can play it more since I LOVE THIS GAME. The game is very easy once you have the proper party and also the Blood Dragon Armor helps so much." I just completed the game myself for the first time. Do you feel there was a need for a new system or should they have just retained the use of the DnD license?
Why didn't you play Movie Game three times instead?
(I call ME2 Movie Game because it's a movie that's also a game.)
if you rush through and do nothing like 20 hours if you do everything and your going to want to because everything is fun 45 hours" What's the actual length of the game? How do you recommend I spec a mage? "
spirit healer is the best thing and never use shape changer it's awful
I have myself (healer), Sten, Morrigan, and Dog. I have not seen this party anywhere - I'm surprised, I fucking kick ass on hard in this game.
" @EpicSteve said:Yes, and if you play on the harder difficulty settings you can double that.if you rush through and do nothing like 20 hours if you do everything and your going to want to because everything is fun 45 hours spirit healer is the best thing and never use shape changer it's awful "" What's the actual length of the game? " Who can light a fart on fire faster: a dwarf or a human? "dwarf everyone knows that
what should i start a new character as: dwarf warrior or human mage? if dwarf, which origin, and if mage, which spec?
which would be more useful?
Blood Mage. This combo works best with another mage in your party to offer support spells." What's the actual length of the game? How do you recommend I spec a mage? "
Put everything you've got into magic and willpower until they're high enough to allow you access to every spell. Continue on, but branch off some points into Constitution after that. Everything else can stay bare minimum for what you need (just enough str and dex to be able to equip the items you need, keeping in mind that if you're dead-set on wearing armor and using large weapons, it's best to take a specialization in arcane warrior).
- Go through the line of blood mage spells asap. Blood wound will devastate large groups of creatures, blood control can often be used to snag a higher-level creature and have them fight for you for awhile. Blood sacrifice can heal you back quickly (use it on a character in your party with a ton of health), and the ability to exhaust your mana and go directly back into casting using health means you don't run out of spell-casting juice until the hardest of fights.
- Go through at least one line of elemental damage spell of your choice (I'd suggest either fire or electricity, and then cold if you can take another).
- Take mana drain, health drain, and vulnerability hex, as the two former are potent when combined with the latter. Good for healing and gaining back mana.
- Take mind blast. Mind blast is invaluable for when your mage is being attacked, as it stuns enemies immediately and will reset their targeting, meaning they will seek a different person to attack when they snap out of it.
- Take force field. You get three important uses with this one. Protecting a character who is about to die. Drawing aggression with one character, force fielding him/her, letting the enemies bunch up around them, and blasting them with spells while you remain immune to the damage. Finally, if you're facing a large number of enemies plus a really powerful one, you can force field the difficult one to keep them out of the fight until you've thinned out the ranks a little
- The whole hex line of spells. Obviously vulnerability and affliction hexes compliment your direct damage fireballs/what-have-you. Then there's misdirection, which means that the enemy you cast it on pretty much won't be hitting you for awhile. Death hex means they'll be dead before they're much of a threat, since every attack that strikes will be a critical hit.
- Finish off the entropy (drain life) branch to get death cloud. Combine death cloud and death hex for the highest instant damage amount in the game.
Like I said, this works best if you've got another mage to back you up. It will let you get off spell combos faster. Some good ones that aren't specifically recognized as combo spells are:
- Area effect spell (inferno, blizzard) + a narrow path between you and the enemy + glyph of repulsion = the enemy takes constant damage and can't reach you for the duration of the repulsion glyph.
- Similarly, area effect spell + earthquake = constant damage while the enemy keeps falling over and has a hard time reaching you. Great because earthquake is an instant-cast spell, so you can set this up easily with one mage.
I also suggest having someone around who knows haste. Set them up to always have it active, and it will help you out in fights and make traversing the world faster.
More general advice: read up on the spell combos, and choose a couple that sound good to you. Focus your spell choices on those.
Is there a lot of cool loot? I always wondered how much of that game was loot-focused, if it is at all.
@Alphiehyr: If you have the game on PC, there are a few community created female armors that show some skin. You can find them over on dragonagenexus.com.
Only 3 times? I've beaten 3 times with just a mage class. Twice for warrior, and twice for rogue.
Mage is by far the strongest, unless you get mods for the game. You need an archery mod. Archery is incredibly underpowered.
Arcane Warrior was so overpowered. Well, they made him a lot weaker now, but you could solo the entire game on nightmare with an Arcane Warrior.
My favorite combo:
Human Mage (Blood Mage + Healer) --> Go for a more Necromancer/Warlock type character
Morrigan (Shapeshifter + Healer) --> More Elementalist style mage
Leliana (Bard + Ranger) --> Archer with a pet
Alistair (Templar + Berserker) --> A tank
I'm happy that Awakening is making Warrior and Rogues stronger. Mages were just way too overpowered.
I was looking for some advice on my non-mage playthroughs. I do just fine on mage - crowd control is not a problem, neither is healing. When I try to play Warrior or Rouge I noticed a distinct lack of support - is it best to hit the Mages tower 1st and get Wynne for a non mage game? Should I convert Morrigan into a healer instead?
The reason why the Mage tower is so important is because of how your attributes increase a lot. Mage Tower should always be first.
What is your party? I need more info. Is your main character a DPS? Or a tank? Do you use a Rogue? DO you use the rogue as an archer? Or an assasin?
"You need an archery mod. Archery is incredibly underpowered.Archery isn't underpowered. It's just poorly designed. (Without the archery mod) You just need Song of Courage and Rock Aura. With some good equips, you can get close to autocrit and rapid fire attack speed. It makes the dragon and mage bosses on Nightmare stupidly easy because you don't need to move at all. It's just too bad that the archery talents are pretty bad.
Well I had a struggled a few times with the following:
2handed Warrior + Allister + Morrigan + Lelana
Dual wield Rouge + Allister + Morrigan + Lelana
I think what I want to end up doing with Warrior is a dual wield build (I liked Champion the most of the advanced class but seems better suited to a tank than a DD), likewise dual wielding with Rouge (going for assassin and maybe duelist? not sure on second class). I'm a fairly novice player at this point - just noticed a night and day difference when I started a mage vs the melee classes.
I guess I've got a question on the Mage tower too - it was fine when I played as mage, but I was able to run crowd control and healing - how can a Rouge or Warrior stand up to the sections where you're forced to solo? or do I just stay in animal form and collect the stat boosts when I can?
Use health poultices to heal. Try to get the AoE talents like dual sweep. Switch between forms to use all of the spells (fireball, hurl) but try to get all the stat boosts since they're permanent and there's no going back once you're out."I guess I've got a question on the Mage tower too - it was fine when I played as mage, but I was able to run crowd control and healing - how can a Rouge or Warrior stand up to the sections where you're forced to solo? or do I just stay in animal form and collect the stat boosts when I can? Note: I hate the fade...
Warrior:
If you want to have a DPS warrior, 2handed or dual wield is up to you. The thing with 2handed is that you need a high dexterity but that means your accuracy is a lot higher. You can do a shit load of damage with 2 handed, but you attack a lot slower and are lot less accurate. Berserker is a must for DPS characters obviously. See, Morrigan is great a offensive mage, but I might actually recommend trying out Wynne because of how good of a healer she is. I don't recommend using Leliana unless you get an archery mod. Zevran can be far more useful with his backstabs.
Try having all the enemies attack Alistair, and Zevran and your character kill all the enemies. You can then have Wynne heal all your guys, and boost their defense and attack. Make sure Alistair always has enough stamina to taunt. A lot of the time enemies will attack the enemy doing the most damage and the one carrying the heaviest armor. Give your strongest defensive armor to Alistair, and make sure he always has taunt and threaten. Have Zevran and your guy clean up. And actually, be a 2H DPS warrior. You're going to have two many people on your team using 1H swords.
For rogues, the only way to go IMO, is an assassin style rogue. Archery, like I said, is useless without a mod. I also wouldn't recommend two rogues. Assassin rogue as your main character with Alistair tanking, and Morrigan and Wynne would be a deadly combo. You could replace one of the mages with someone like Sten, but the more mages, the better IMO. Duelist and Assassin for your rogue.
Is the problem that your enemies don't attack Alistair, who I'm guessing is your tank, or your enemies kill Alistair and then just overtake you? This is an important question.
Mage tower, just stay in the forms. Like continuously switch between the forms and use their powers. It is pretty easy, but I found it to be incredibly boring. Change into burning man and throw some fireballs, and when they get close to you switch to Golem and use Quake. Try to stay in your warrior or rogue class as least as possible mainly because you character isn't built for having the enemies attack him since he is a DPS character

It is underpowered. Like Song of Courage is great. People need to use that more. If you have Wynne, you can constantly have her increase your archer's attack as well. But they are still underpowered compared to the other classes. Ranger is a must obviously. Arrow of Slaying is important as hell. Like they don't suck, but they are underpowered. Thankfully, Bioware realized that and they are making them a lot stronger in Awakening.
Just for clarification, 2handed is not less accurate than dual wielding. Strength and Dexterity both increase melee accuracy by 0.5 for each point above ten. So if you put all your points into strength, you're not going to be less accurate than someone who puts points into dexterity." @SteamPunkJin: You can do a shit load of damage with 2 handed, but you attack a lot slower and are lot less accurate.
It really isn't. I actually thought the same at first because my first character was an archer. :(It is underpowered. Like Song of Courage is great. People need to use that more. That was a bad mistake. It almost made me quit DA:O altogether. But going back to an archer, they're really really strong when built right.
So in normal combat, I can get ~50% crit rate on my archers since I only have 1 rouge in my party. The greatest advantage that archers have over melee is that they don't need to move. They start attacking right away and if you put a Glyph of Warding/Glyph of Repulsion and Glyph of Neutralization over your archers (and Shale), you don't have to worry too much about melee enemies or mages.
Concerning archery, it is still underpowered. The only way to get a powerful archer is if you have another rogue and Shale with Rock Mastery. Does a mage need that to be strong? No. A warrior? No.
That is why I find archery underpowered. Because while my mages aren't required to have so and so party members to be effective. How about having just one archer and having Alistair as your tank instead? The archer is the weakest member on that party. Archers shouldn't need all this equipment either to be powerful. Like the only reason that fight was so easy was because it was one enemy and Flemeth would hurl a fireball at Shale once in awhile. You try to fight Caridin (and imagine if Shale was still withyou), and that wouldn't work. Golems would rush you, and archers wouldn't be able to do anything. Hell, I'd like to see that guy to that same party and build against the high dragon.
If you want to be as effective in that video, then you need all that equipment, you need Shale and Rock Mastery and you need song of courage from two rogues. To be an effective archer, you need to build your entire team around it just to have a good archer. It shouldn't be like that.
And you're right about the dexterity thing.
