Hey guys. I just installed my first game to the HDD on my 360 (thank you. thank you all.. now if you please..) there's just one thing I don't understand: Shouldn't I be able to play the game without the disc in the drive? Didn't it install properly? Thanks :)

You still require the disc to play installed games on your 360, it's an anti-piracy measure. The point of the installation is to help load times.

I believe it just makes the game run a little faster. It also makes the disc drive much quieter.

My guess is that Microsoft probably could have made it so you don't need the disc to run the game however if they did that then everybody would only ever bother renting games.

    Edit: I agree with Driadon

The only reason you need the disk in the drive is for a disk check

One of the other benefits to installing on the hard drive is that the disk doesn't spin while playing, which will help your drive last longer. You do have to put the disk in to play though. It's inconvenient, but it makes sense. They don't have any other way of verifying that you own, or at least are currently in possession of, a copy of the game.

Yup, them's the breaks. Even the 20GB install on the PC version requires the disc in the drive to play.

Really!? you'd think with all the digital distribution these days that wouldn't be the case. Then again I haven't bought a boxed copy of a PC game for a while.

They should implement some kind of system that creates a temporary image for 1-2 days in your console when you insert the disc. I have no idea if thats even possible but it would own if you swap installed games constantly

Yeah I hear you. But digital distribution is also the reason they love to lock it down to the disc as well. I think it sucks to take up that much space and still need the damn thing in there, but there it is. The pirates win again, I guess.

LOL virtual drives for consoles... that seems complicated, but it would also save me having to get a new HD, which I need soon, haha.

Where's the harm in having your disc in the drive? The whole point of installation is to cut down on load times and to reduce the risk of system failure through having the drive going for hours. As has been pointed out.

First of all, thanks for the replies guys. :)

I never said this was a problem. I just wasn't sure if it was installed properly, since I had to insert the disc (I just thought this was one of the perks). But the guys here cleared  it up for me. I installed for the reasons mentioned, and now I am sure I can benefit the advantages ;)

I've personally never installed a game to the hard drive as I've heard that sometimes this can make the game run wonky on older titles. I'm thinking about doing it with Dragon Age however as I can forsee playing it quite alot. Has anybody ever had any issues with installation of games?
