boj4ngles's Return to Ostagar (PC) review

    More great questing and looting

Return to Ostagar (RTO) is not an expansion, but more akin to a large side quest in the same family as Warden's Keep (WK).  Upon download you automatically recieve a quest in your codex to send you on your way.  My character was level 13 at the time of completion and felt slightly overpowered.  It felt like the range cap might have been around 10 or 11.

The battles are fun and varied, taking place mostly in wide outdoor areas.  Some of the encounters involve a whole lot of mobs so I'd recommend bringing some aoe or crowd control.  There is also a boss fight that has a cool little twist to it.  All in all there is not much dialogue, although Wynne and Alistair will have some comments as they were Ostagar survivors.  Without giving too much away, I should also say there is some interesting codex filler for the main story that I suspect may have some implications in the coronation segment when my character gets there.  The entire mood feels somewhat somber and lonely (as this is the site of one of Ferelden's most catastrophic military defeats) but it also fits in very nicely with the main story.

And of course there is loot.  It is beneficial only to mid level warriors and rogues, but there is a fair amount of it and a very cool set of armor.  As with the WK DLC, the gear feels slightly overpowered but is fun to have anyways.

So is it worth $5?  Well it took about an hour to complete, there is some great gear, and it definitely adds at least some info to the main story.  However it does not feel as "stand-alone" as Warden's Keep, and I felt just a little pissed off that it hadn't been included in the original game's release.  I've become something of a DA:O fanatic over the past few months however, so I was going to buy it no matter what.

Return to Ostagar: Short on story, heavy on combat. 0

Dragon Age is a great game with a lot of content. Return to Ostagar is yet another little diversion to keep you busy until the next game comes out, giving you more of the same great story-infused tactic gameplay, but ultimately not offering anything different or meaty enough to be of much worth. The gist of things is that you’ve been tasked with retrieving the gear of the late King Cailin. That means, as the title suggests, returning to the battle-torn Ostagar. What you’ll ultimately get out of O...
