Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon review

Recently I have been looking for a good, old, dumb FPS for a while now, I like blowing off some steam by ducking behind something and shooting until everyone falls over into a ragdolly mess. However, short of paying full price for Call of Duty Ghosts, there isn't much I haven't played or want to touch. In my despereation I remembered that Blood Dragon was suggested to me awhile back and I haven't gotten around to it yet. Now I wasn't the biggest fan of Far Cry 3, it had its issues with story and gameplay but was still a good game. How pleasantly surprised I was to find that Blood Dragon was everything I needed and wanted at this point in time, 1 week before Wolfenstein releases.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon delivers everything it promises and reinvigerated me in what a fun FPS can be. Where Far Cry took everything seriously and dramitic, Blood Dragon takes the piss out of everything from the tutoral, to how you reload guns. Taking place in the far flung future of 2007, you play as Sgt. Rex "Power" Colt, a cyber-commando armed with a gravelly voice of one-liners and a pissed off attitude. You are sent to a mysterious island, to track down a rogue agent. The game has a 80's sci-fi action movie feel with its soundtrack, characters and setting. While short compared to what it has spin-off of, it doesn't over stay its welcome, I spent a sunday literally running through that game unable to put the controller down. The controls feel great, the're light and snappy, the weapons shoot bullets and they tend to kill things but match the setting, except for 1 or 2 they are not surprising since its based off of Far Cry 3. The setting of the landscape is lovelly if your sick of the sun, it gives a very bleak vision of a post nuclear war future, there are alot of references to 80's movies through out the land that are worth investigating and the ending, without ruining anything else, it inhabits my dreams. Which unlike the other Far Cry games ( that is my take, don't take this personally) is a surprise.

I will now talk about a moment that I thought was worth mentioning. (Spoilers, sort of) On my play through there was a spot where I had to blow up a dam, an oppotunity arose where 3 bad guys came out to a ledge, I proceeded by sniping the guy in the centre then used a zip line to jump off and land with my knife in one of their chests then stabbed his mate before I ran uo stairs and shotgunned a flamethrower guy which caused him to explode. This happened in about 7 seconds and this was the least exciting part of the mission.

I didn't find a Far Cry 3 in my must have collection but the direction the DLC has gone follows the crazy fun of the Siant Rows or Just Cause's of the world. Not the longest ride in the world but one worth taking. I know its late to the party but if you haven't played this, buy it now.
