I see this thread going bad places. Whatever I love that game. Haters can stuff it.
Right there with you.
off course
PS The battle system was all right and it had it's moments, but there are a lot of things in the game that are really fucking dumb!
It's quite good. Unfortunately, the internet can be Hyperbole Land at times, and so often these debates fall into hilarious black and white arguments composed of people calling it the greatest game ever made on one side, and people overcompensating in their hatred of it because fuck-fanboys, on the other.
I loved it back in the day but have no desire ever to play it again.
Exactly. I've tried to play it again periodically over the years, and never made it very far. Revolutionary for its time, it does not hold up well.

I know that feeling. Just look at these guys dismissing the shit out of FF7 because it happens to be a big game.
It was a technological marvel but had poor characters and a bland battle system.
That said, Golden Saucer is still awesome. I am pro at that snowboarding game like you wouldn't believe.

I liked it. I never actually finished it so I'm also replaying it, just left Midgard. There are obvious downsides to it...equipment was dumbed down to only three things, the materia system was generally pretty boring and the story tended to dip into the convoluted. At the same time the condensed equipment system didn't really loose a whole lot, support materia added a lot of cool ways to break the game and I still think the story is a lot of fun.
I replayed it a couple summers ago. It's aged fairly well in the gameplay department, but the graphics have not. Nothing a good old dose of nostalgia can't help, but otherwise you need to really squint to look past it all. Manage that, and the game's good. It's hard to explain why nowadays, it's just a really good JRPG. The combat is as slow as your ATB bar, but otherwise the commands execute quickly.
The materia is fun to play with, though it does mean that the only thing to distinguish characters is their slight innate stat differences and their limits (which really only applies to Aerith I feel. Everyone else could be a fighter or a mage except her mostly). And even the plot is solid if you ignore some of the compilation complications. So yeah, overall a good game with maybe an overzealous fanbase.
It's all right. It's fine. I only first played it earlier this year and played it for about ten hours, and while certain things don't hold up (those ugly fucking graphics!), most things are fine.
Hell, even the story is fine. I don't know if "dumb" is quite the right word. "Cheesy" came across as a much better one, but it still has some good twists (that I already know of).

Fuss the trust?
I only played and beat it couple years ago myself. I really liked it but found the pacing to be poor. The 3rd act is quite rushed and is a bit disappointing. Still, I put in 80 hours so that should speak volumes.

This. I'm actually replaying the PC version right now modded out like crazy. Brings back some great memories. For me it's one of my top five games of all time. It's so easy to pot shot it and talk shit about it because that's the cool thing to do nowadays. So many misconceptions about it, but whatever. Haters can hate, but they can't deny the fact that it's probably one of, if not THE, most important JRPG's of all time.
For me, FF7 will probably always be one of the best. It was my favorite for a long time. I played it when it was new, and I wish more people could have experienced it like that. It's hard for a lot of people having first played the game years after it was released to appreciate it the way that so many of its fans do , so I get why people who have only recently experienced FF7 don't always feel the praise is justified.

Music is great, art direction is awesome, the characters are cool (yo, you have a freaking talking dog in your party, and a guy with a gun instead of a hand) and the battle system's fun. The story is a bit jumbeled and very... anime-y? Yeah, I think that's the right word. But it's a great game that gets a lot of shit because people are horrible. In general, people are horrible.

The greatest spoiler reveal I've seen today
Final Fantasy VII is pretty awesome don't get me wrong but its not my favourite today, that honour goes to XII or VI : P however instead of just arbitrarily posting which one is the best etc cant we all just sit back and appreciate each entry for its own unique and interesting setting/central themes. Except VIII lol that shit can suck it!!!!
Best thing for me about VII.... The soundtrack, so many awesome songs.

Costa del sol = best town theme ever!!

FFVIII was awesome, easily my favorite Playstation Final Fantasy game. FFXII on PS2 is my favorite(because it's basically star wars with a sexy Chewbacca)
I mean come on, FFVIII had this when it comes to soundtracks:
I actually just replayed it last year. Better than I remember in some spots, but.... yeah.... not real good.
It's pretty good. I've played through it three or four times. The prequel is almost as good, but it ends a little abruptly. I'd say XII is my favourite though.
It's just so ugly, and the synthesizer they used for the music shreds my...brain..thing..! M;urg..
I had somehow forgotten just how terrible the music sounds, especially those awful "BWAH BWAH BWAH" horns. Most of the compositions are pretty forgettable too, though there are a couple of good tracks.
I loved it back when it came out and I really enjoyed replaying through it 5 or 6 years ago. IX is better though.
@zeforgotten: I see your video and raise you this:
All the PSX Final Fantasy games hold a special, nostalgia-tinted place in my heart. IX's my personal favourite, though.
