I'm a big fan of FF13, I've been playing it on and off since release, and I've logged around 13 hours now. I love the battle mechanic, the visuals and a lot of the characters seem very interesting to me. However, I really, for the life of me don't understand the story, I mean I understand the urgency of them trying to escape, and they're fugitives of the state, but beyond that, I'm completely lost when they speak of things like, pulse, grand pulse, cocoon (sic) fal'cie and l'cie. Did any of you have trouble with this? does it become any more clear, or is there some place online that helps explain the details of the story? Cheers for any help, love you all.
P.S. Got my coffee talk achievement! \o/
Final Fantasy XIII
Game » consists of 17 releases. Released Mar 09, 2010
This entry into the Final Fantasy universe is set in the worlds of Pulse and Cocoon. Players take control of multiple characters who are caught in a war between these worlds.
I don't understand the story.
Pulse= the planet
Gran Pulse= what people from Pulse call it
Cocoon= The artificial floating world.
Fal'cie= Powerful magical beings
L'cie= Fal'cie slaves, if they dont do what their told they become monsters, if they complete their mission they turn to crystal.
Pulse Fal'cie = Gods of pulse
Cocoon Fal'cie = gods of cocoon.
Pulse L'cie = Enemy of cocoon
Cocoon L'cie= Saviors of Cocoon
Focus = What L'cie are given, a action to take, if they don't figure out their focus they turn into Ce'ithe
Ce'ithe = Monster's that roam the halls of a Pulse Fal'cie, these are L'cie who did not complete their focus in time.
so on and so on.
It wasn't too hard to understand
It's pretty simple but then I guess FF does have a habit of having retardedly simple storylines but then explaining them in such deliberately convoluted ways in an attempt to obscure just how simple (and often silly) they are. FFX springs to mind as an example, which really milked the notion of "Big monster called Sin (*groan*) is going around, you have to escort a woman who can kill it but this shit has happened before and Sin keeps coming back - oh damn it's all a conspiracy from the obviously creepy church. Let's defeat Sin with the power of friendship and an aquatic version of American football".
There are a lot of complaints about the incomplete story, I liked that, kept you wondering and speculating. I suggest to check out the FFXIII Wiki, if you don't mind reading spoilers:

I didn't really had an issue with it. Then again I'm into TYPE-MOON, which is the epitome of back-story and explanations.
I had a good idea of what was going on, then the final cinematic just totally didn't make sense to me.

The story is just horrible. Even Square employees agree, or at least one did. My brother and a friend "kinda" scammed their way in to E3. Guess they were BSing with some Square employee and ragged on FF13/ the general state of games since they merged with ENIX. He pretty much agreed with everything they said.
