Thoughts? Controversy? Debate? There can be only one great host!
Personally I think Jeff does a better job, he doesn't need to force the podcast to move on and even with all the weird tangents and the Nintendo Downloads he still finishes the podcast at a decent hour and whats most important is that it's still listenable after 2 hours, you'd still want more.
Is Jeff a better host than Ryan?
Yeah, however, I feel Jeff totally dosent care about being host and i'm guessing has a rather "whatevs, ill do it if I have to" view on it.
I feel Ryan kind of thinks as his role as a host is an integral part of who he is both on giant bomb and in real life, despite not (in my opinion) being that great at it.
I'm more than happy with the current set-up and I'm sure its like that for a reason. Getting a jeff hosted podcast every now and then when ryan is ill is enough for me. We still have NDX after all.
Edit: Nobody i repeat NOBODY will surpass rich gallup as a podcast/live show host.
They're both great, hell Vinny was a great host back in the Hotspot days. The whole GB crew has been doing this for so long I figure any of the 4 could run a solid podcast.
I really don't think Brad has the charisma to host the Bombcast to be honest. I think I'd prefer him just as a regular cast member." Personally I think they are both great hosts but I am still curious to see Brad host the Bombcast at some point. "
Vinny, Ryan, and Jeff however, can all do host duty equally well.
This seems relevant:

Funny, I was having this exact conversation with one of my friends last night.
I think when Jeff hosts, he tends to get more invested and animated in the discussions, which I think is great. Look at the livecast last night for no better proof of that - he was using things being said by other people as a way to springboard into talking about some really interesting stuff. There's something to be said about what Ryan usually does, which is attempt to push the conversation in a direction to have other people talk about it, not use it as his own soapbox, but I was really grooving on what Jeff was doing last night. That said, Jeff also doesn't seem to give a fuck about keeping things in order. And that's great when they want to go off on completely insane tangents (again, last night's fucking hilarious livecast), but not so much when everyone starts talking over one another.
They're both good really good hosts. In general I think there's a bit more of a professionalism to Ryan which makes him preferable, but there's an "really smart inmates running the asylum" quality when Jeff hosts that I revel in.
Ryan is great at keeping it moving forward, but sometimes too good at it, cutting off what could be a good side discussion.
Meanwhile, Jeff sometimes goes too far off on tangents, but those tangents often lead to some good stuff.
Whateves, they're both pretty good.
The choice is obvious, the Bombcast is very much like an RPG party with everyone filling out the required classes. Some party members may be able to fill other roles adequately but is that what they were spec'd out to do? I break em down like this:
Ryan: Cleric - keeps things moving, he's the logical, level headed host who keeps things on track
Jeff: Wizard - massive knowledge base for spell casting, with a imaginative mind and wisdom of age
Brad: Archer - the baritone voice who is fairly average at all skills, specialized in certain aspects (Starcraft, ect) but like to get in and out of combat as quickly as possible
Vinny: Fighter - The drunken comic-relief dwarf who deep down punishes himself (grinding RPGs).
Each has the capabilities to host but i think Ryan and Jeff are obviously both good at it and i find myself missing Ryan when he's out. Think he's my choice....
Ryan is way better.
Jeff seems apathetic about sound mixing. If you listen with headphones, like I do, you notice this. The sound will go from eardrum splitting when someone yells into the mic (usually Jeff) to inaudible when someone else speaks softly (usually Brad).
Ryan, by contrast, always keeps a nice steady level. Just look at the great work he did on the GOTY podcast in 2009. Vinny and Brad lost their mics and you could still hear them. If Jeff did that it would have been unlistenable.
Also Ryan keeps the Nintendo download talk to a minimum.
Thank you Mr. Davis.
I think they are both great hosts though Ryan does seem to have a knack for it.
One thing I've noticed is that sound mixing is really bad when Jeff does it. There are a lot of HIGHS and LOWS. Jeff has a way of talking really loud when he starts saying something and then gradually gets quieter as he goes on. Yesterday when I was coming home from work I got on the highway and had to turn up the volume to hear what they were saying. All of the sudden they all got loud and it scared the living shit out of me. I was so pissed off for a second, cursing the guys for giving me a heart attack. Haha.
I don't know what Ryan does to make the whole podcast easy to hear, but I wish it was done when he wasn't around.
It seems completely crazy to me that Vinny hosted the hotspot back in the day. I can't imagine him hosting now for some reason. Guess its been too long. Would love to see(well, hear I guess) it though.
To me Rich Gallup is the greatest host of all time. That man can host anything.
" @Monkeygb21: Being a host and being an audio level manager and mixer are totally different things "
True enough.
However, since the podcast host is the one who also mixes the audio (on the Bombcast, I know there are other podcasts that have separate hosts and producers) I count it as one job. The way Jeff mixes (or rather doesn’t bother to mix) is a pet peeve of mine.
That being said I still prefer Ryan as a host. He does a nice job of keeping things on task and away from Nintendo downloads (hey look, another pet peeve).
Jeff is a fine backup, but Ryan is the better host.
I think Jeff is more lively, and funnier as a host, but technically Ryan is the better host purely because he knows when to move on and how to keep things (relatively) on-topic. Jeff would just go on and on if he had the chance.
They both do a great job but you gotta love Ryans enthusiasm. I think it's hillarious how he just screams over anyone else when he feels its time to change topic.
" Personally I think they are both great hosts but I am still curious to see Brad host the Bombcast at some point. "Really? I think this is probably a good representation of what that might be:
Ugh.. This is the Giant Bombcast. I'm Brad Shoemaker. I'm really tired right now guys, so everyone at this table tell them your names and also any games you have been playing. Oh God I'm soooooo tired.
Emails?
It's probably a pain on their end, but I think they should rotate through the crew (minus Brad if he doesn't want to / is leaving). It'd help keep things fresh, plus I think Ryan (also the Ryan & Jeff dynamic) is kinda wasted when he has to keep one eye on his hosting duties all the time.
