It's going to repeat itself vertically no matter what you do (unless you get an image that is like 50000 pixels in height). It should center itself horizontally though.
Once you assign the picture as your background though, reload the page or go to a different page of your profile. Sometimes when you first attach it, it doesn't look right until you refresh.
