Any MMOs out there holding your attention?

I've been looking for another MMO to get into (WoW being the main one I play).

With the cavalcade of F2P MMOs I was wondering if there are any out there worth playing, ones that don't paywall a lot of the good content. Something that I felt got even worse when I booted up Neverwinter to check out the new content. There's about 3 new money stores and a wild amount of currency that made me feel pretty damn depressed. As well a bunch of new character types that you have to pay for.

I'm also totally willing to pay for a good experience. I've tried to get into Guild Wars 2 and lost my attention many times. I'm thinking I'll renew my Wildstar subscription, but I was still wondering what all of you think!

I've been playing FF14 for the last several months and really enjoying myself. The GB guild is super active, and that game does a lot to fix common design problems in other MMOs.

The Old Republic's story stuff is holding my attention well. There's some nickel and dime stuff there that's kinda shitty though (dungeon passes, pay for hiding helmets). Subscribing gets rid of all that though. Game just got housing, and recently added spaceship PvP.

But man, the story stuff is a ton of fun, unless you don't like BioWare RPGs I guess (or MMOs).

ArcheAge has been grabbing my attention for the last few days. Queue times are pretty rough, but the idea of a sandbox, open world MMO with land ownership is neat to me. And the crafting system is really, really deep and complex, which is an insta grab for me.

The whole world being player driven is also really intriguing to me. I'm only level 20ish, but when I get higher level and understand the game more, I really wanna join a guild that tries to enforce law and order in the world. Hunting wanted players, escorting merchant players on trade routes, and serving in the player ran court jury.

It also feels more like an Elder Scrolls game then ESO did, which I find ironic. If you can see a place, you can pretty much walk or swim to it. You can even rowboat across the ocean to the other continents, though survival is not likely.

So far the game seems like it will easily distract me until Warlords of Draenor launches.

I'm neck deep in the Destiny pre-raid gear grind and enjoying it quite a bit!

Other than that I've thrown in the towel on ESO and back into WoW for pre-Draenor fun.

No but the problem is likely with me. I just don't want to dedicate so much time to one game anymore, having already played WoW for some 6 years straight. As a person who enjoys playing a wide variety of games, MMOs just sap all my free time away by playing the same content over and over. I really like FFXIV but I just don't want to spend my time there anymore.

I tried to get into The old republic about a month ago and hated playing as my first character, a light side jedi. After a couple hours with that I made a new character (Bounty hunter) and had a bit more luck. Unfortunately even though I was having fun, the MMO tropes were just too much for me, so I had to drop it before getting off the first world. Really would've loved to keep playing, but I just couldn't get past that gameplay.

Besides that I've been playing a lot of Destiny, which I know isn't a traditional MMO, but I guess it still counts. I very much feel like most people about it. The story's barely there, and what is isn't great. The mission design is wrote and repetitive as hell, but goddamn if it isn't super fun to actually play, unlike the old republic.

I would love to find something that would grab me like WoW has, but for the moment it still seems like the only option for me. Tried FF14 and Wildstar and a few others, but there's something ineffable about WoW that makes it hard to take up anything else. It's had its ups and downs but it's still an incredible game.

Have you tried FF14 since the relaunch in August of last year? I convinced a friend of mine who played during the original launch and didn't like the game to resub, and he says it feels like a totally different game.

I'm gearing up to get back on board the WoW train. With 6.0 coming in a couple weeks after so long without any major new content now seems like an unusual time to be looking for something new if that's your main thing. But I can relate to that hunger for something new. GW2 and Wildstar would be my recommendations, but you're familiar with those. It could be a long shot, but I personally enjoyed my time with Champion's Online, it's probably the MMO I've put the most time into since WoW came into my life.

@ajamafalous: My guess is Rorie is in so deep in WoW in terms of play time that anything else feels hopeless lol

At least that seems to be the trend I notice. Once you spend so much time building a character then it feels dumb to do it all over again.

I was probably only able to separate myself from FF11 (and the thousands of hours of playtime) because the game has changed and isn't what it used to be. There is no point for me to play it anymore. It can give you that push to say its time to move on.

Guild Wars 2. I got super heavy into it for a year after launch, burnt out for a while, and now I'm back with it. It's a fantastic game.

I've never been bitten by the MMO bug and that kind of makes me sad, or at least left out. I have tried plenty of MMOs and even played quite a bit of WoW (up to level 20 or so). I was hoping Knights of the Old Republic would entice me in but I never had the chance to play it until my friends had moved on from it. I think with someone to drag me along I could be persuaded to throw in 20-30 hours or so.

That said I have been thinking about Old Republic recently. I over got just past level 10 and didn't leave the starter area. I know I wasn't shown everything that game has to offer.

@rorie: That's what has kind of happened to me. WoW is the only MMO I've actually gotten to the late game in. However, if I can find a good community I'll definitely sink time into another, but it will always be secondary it seems.

Not really. There was a time in my life when I would try every mmo they put out and I was always let down. I'll probably play WoW when WoD come out mostly because I already purchased it. But I doubt I'll get further than level cap once. I'm not a very social person in the first place so I might as well be playing single player games.

I totally understand that sentiment, but I have characters on WoW with months of playtime as well. I played from vanilla to Wrath, then off and on for Cata and Mists. FF14 is the first MMO I've played since WoW to really recapture that feeling of being totally immersed in everything about an MMO, from the progression to the design mechanics (I really enjoyed my time with TOR as well, since it was basically BC-era WoW, but there wasn't any endgame to speak of when I played and BioWare didn't seem like they knew how to balance things. I've read it's gotten much better since then, but that ship has sailed).

I like to play Tera on and off - currently known as Tera: Rising. It's super streamlined where you really just roll through content. On top of that for a free to play MMO the money hooks aren't as pervasive and in your face.

Yeah, Tera's a lot of fun. Most action-y combat I've played in an MMO, outside of something like Planetside 2 of course. It plays more like an actual action-RPG as opposed to stuff like Guild Wars 2 or Wildstar.

Good podcast game too.

Oh yah definitely. I think it's a game that learned all the right lessons from games that came before it and integrated them into it's own systems. Good instance matching, good auction house, fun gameplay and it doesn't hurt that the graphics are really nice. It would be great if there was a Giant Bomb presence but I don't think anyone really cares much for it. I blame the whole pedophile controversy for turning people away. Also since the game is quite literally splintered into a EU and NA version that doesn't do it any favors in getting people together.

Whenever there is a real gaming drought I fire up Tera and continue leveling my warrior. I'm closing in on the max level.. few more years now and I can start a new character.

For what it's worth I've tried pretty much every free to play MMO under the sun, and a couple paid ones as well. The only MMO that ever hooked me was City of Heroes, which is now shut down. Since then the only thing that has come close is Star Trek Online, which I think is a fantastic game, but idk that a person could get into it if they didn't care at all about Star Trek.

With the cancellation of Titan I believe I have no future MMOs on the horizon that interest me (not that there were many to begin with); though I certainly made a good go of it in the two that I played extensively so I don't really have any reason to feel bad about it. I'm more sad that there's no new RTS to play to be honest, looks like the future of strategy games rests solely on the shoulders of Paradox. I'll probably play WoW for a month once every 4 or 5 years because BRD.

ArcheAge has me hooked, whenever I'm actually able to play anyway. Other than that, been playing Planetside 2 a lot more than I thought I would after trying it last week, loving the hell out of it. Beyond that I'll be jumping back on the WoW train as soon as the expansion pre-patch hits in 2-3 weeks.

I've been playing around with a game I found that is currently on Kickstarter called Project Gorgon. The game is being developed by a couple of people who worked on Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2. The game definitely doesn't have the triple A look like ArcheAge being an indie game and the gameplay is extremely reminiscent of old school mmo's and I really like it. The game is definitely a gem in the rough still but it sounds like their vision for the game is better than most I have heard lately.

The game is in Alpha and is currently free to play. If their Kickstarter fails which is looks like it will, I would definitely start paying to continue playing this game and see where they take it.

Guild Wars 2 was rather boring and lacked in depth and complexity. I didn't care for the themepark of Wildstar. Archeage seemed okay for a little while, but I don't think it really hits the mark in terms of "sandbox" gameplay. FFXIV is a backwards step from FFXI. FFXI is getting up in years and has changed so much that it's no longer recognizable as what it once was.

What is left for me? Is there anything on the horizon that's actually offering something different and interesting?

Recently re-subbed WoW. It's a been a few years since I've played. Bought the latest expansion pack and created a new character.

It's charm has certainly faded, but it's still a fun game.

Kind of interesting to only see Guild Wars 2 mentioned once.
