Best 3rd person shooter to You?

Never really thought of Max Payne as a third person shooter...guess it is tho. I'd say Gears easily, although i really liked...get ready for it... Lost Planet >_>

Mass Effect 2

Fatal Frame, it's kinda like a shooter... but with films...

Pure 3rd person shooter: Dead Space  
 Hybrid shooter: Mass Effect 2

Does ArmA 2 in third person mode count? If not, Mass Effect 2.

Uncharted 2 or Dead Space recently for me. 
 
I haven't played ME2 yet but I hear it's pretty solid, shooter mechanic wise.

Well Mass Effect 2 is the best 3rd person shooter game. But if you're asking which game has the best gunplay and 3rd person shooting mechanics I have to say Gears of War.

Lost Planet for me. I love the setting and mechs. 
 
I would also say ME2 but I'm talking strictly 3rd person shooter, no RPG.

Resident Evil 4. Dead Space and Gears of War are also right up there too.

Max Payne all the way, baby.

Resident Evil 5 if you consider that a third person shooter, Gears 2 if you don't.

People seem to forget that GTA IV is basically a third-person shooter and that it has some of the smoothest gameplay mechanics in that genre. I don't ever remember finding Niko having any weird glitches whilst crouching against a wall. and he popped out of cover really quickly, then back into cover just as quickly.
Also, I might go as far as to say that GTA IV has better 3rd-person shooter mechanics than Gears. Gears is sometimes just slow maneuvering and can be a real pain in the ass to get the character that's under your control to do what you want in terms connecting to a wall or bounding right over the top of it and finding yourself standing out in the open while the opposition just opens fire. Especially annoying when you're playing on the hardest difficulty.
 
(Please note that I've completed Gears of War 2 on insanity and I'll always be at the last boss in the first one on insanity difficulty, so any comments about me just not being very good at it are moot.
The game mechanics simply need to be worked on a little more that's all. Oh and the dumbass team AI too. If you play on Insanity, you'll come to hate the team mate AI. Dumb as shit! Lol.)

My favorite is Mass Effect 2 probably, but the best one is Resident Evil 4.

Tho Max Payne is a killer choice - an awesome and influential  game.

Mass Effect 2 if that counts.

The first Max Payne. I could replay that game over and over again and never get tired of it.

Max Payne 2 was great, and I probably enjoyed it more than other TPS games I've played... yeah so I'll go with that. Hope for Max Payne 3, the king is back, and they don't bother with cover mechanics.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 feels like it has the third person shooter thing mastered.

Off the top of my head, I'm leaning towards Resident Evil 4. It counts, right? Not exactly a traditional control scheme, but I'd say it still qualifies as being a third person shooter...

 And old game but still holds memories to this day, I also go back and play it when ever given the chance.

You might not be shooting bullets, but shooting lightning is even better.

As a strictly third-person shooter, Gears of War for it's tight mechanics in that field. Most games could be a "third person shooter", but we should make some specifics. This topic should be a "you know what I'm talking about" criteria. However, I see people bringing up Mass Effect 2, GTA IV, and other titles that are technically third-person shooters, but are more "action games that have a third person camera that also has shooting in it".

Resident Evil 4 for me.

Uncharted 2, it's just too evolved and controls so fluidly that it seems to have spoiled most games for me.

Mechanically? Gears of War 1/2 (take your pick) 
 
Best TPS Game? Probably go with Max Payne 1/2 (take your pick again) as well.
