Fallout 3's first 5 minutes really got me sucked into the game. All of the MGS series also have pretty good intros.

I'm so incredibly hyped for Borderlands 2, so the original Borderlands intro is my favorite right now.

Not sure if they count, but I like all of the Persona intros before the start screens - even though I've yet to play one.

Nobody mentioned this yet? Ugh, the hell with you all...

Best of all, that intro was customizable!

The first 5 - 10 minutes of Mass Effect 2 where the Normandy is being destroyed was pretty awesome.

A lot of my favorites were already laid out in the thread, so I'll just say that I liked Red Faction 1's intro because it laid the groundwork for the story out pretty concisely and the music used in it didn't get in the way of telling it.

I'm thinking about it and I'm mostly coming back to Fallout 3.  I kind of wanted to stay in the vault.

Saints Row The Third. Jesus Christ, the beginning.

  Also, Brutal Legend. Including gameplay.

  And Undead Nightmare.

I love them all for being unapologetically stupid and funny. They pull you into ridiculous situations and expect you to just roll with them, which is great.

The most remembered beginning of a game would probably be the confusing opening of Planescape: Torment, but that translates badly to video.

Great pick. Too bad it's all down hill from there.

The ones that usually stand out in my mind with a strong opening is Brutal Legend, Batman Arkham City (post the Catwoman tutorial bit) & Skyrim.

edit-forgot about the American McGee Alice games, Psychonauts & Bayonetta.

I think the original Silent Hill has maybe the greatest first five minutes in games.  The music, the way the camera moves, and the PACING.  Games are terribly paced as a general rule, but the beginning of Silent Hill is excellent.  It gives you a little information, and then a little more, and then a little more, and it increases in intensity until it becomes too much and the crescendo happens.  It's the exact counter to the jump scare, which lulls you into security and then surprises you... this one lures you into dread, and things progressively get worse and worse.  Sometimes I turn on my PSN copy just to play the first five or ten minutes because it's so incredible.

Like many have already said, Bioshock has one of the best intros of any video game I have played.
