Fallout 3's first 5 minutes really got me sucked into the game. All of the MGS series also have pretty good intros.
I'm so incredibly hyped for Borderlands 2, so the original Borderlands intro is my favorite right now.
I'm thinking about it and I'm mostly coming back to Fallout 3. I kind of wanted to stay in the vault.
Saints Row The Third. Jesus Christ, the beginning.
And Undead Nightmare.
I love them all for being unapologetically stupid and funny. They pull you into ridiculous situations and expect you to just roll with them, which is great.
The most remembered beginning of a game would probably be the confusing opening of Planescape: Torment, but that translates badly to video.
I think the original Silent Hill has maybe the greatest first five minutes in games. The music, the way the camera moves, and the PACING. Games are terribly paced as a general rule, but the beginning of Silent Hill is excellent. It gives you a little information, and then a little more, and then a little more, and it increases in intensity until it becomes too much and the crescendo happens. It's the exact counter to the jump scare, which lulls you into security and then surprises you... this one lures you into dread, and things progressively get worse and worse. Sometimes I turn on my PSN copy just to play the first five or ten minutes because it's so incredible.
