Sorry if this is a dumb thread to ask this question. I'm new to the forums and this site in general.
But is there a way to make the backdrop darker so it doesnt strain my eyes so much in a dark room? Maybe I'm an idiot and just can't see it.
For the record, the default white site is, and always has been, an abomination.
Yeah, the white default site should probably be reported in the "Bugs" forum.
@believer258: Yeah, one of the redesigns ruined it for everyone. And yeah, the A|A black and white button is just a meaningless symbol you would never click on until someone explains it to you. It could be made a lot clearer that the site has two colour schemes.
@bisonhero: Or, better yet, burn the white site option to the ground.

freedom from choice
is what you want

Yep!
I wish more entertainment sites used the white text on black background thing. I know, every fucking web design course ever says to do it the other way, but the black site just feels easy and relaxing on my eyes. I don't hate the white site and I could use it if it suddenly became my only option for some reason, but I can practically hear my eyes breathe a sigh of relief (it's a figure of speech!) when I get on Giantbomb for an hour after spending a week staring at my bright computer screen at work.
I remember hearing somewhere that younger people prefer dark backgrounds and light text, while older people prefer the opposite, but I have no idea where I heard that and no idea where to find a source (read: too lazy to look it up).

I was going to mount a vigorous defence of the light theme, but everything that pops into my head makes me sound like a white supremacist :(
@believer258: It's a rough situation, as lots of people feel a light background and dark text is more aesthetically pleasing, but it really is rough on the eyes when using a computer for longer periods of time. There's a reason most programmers use a black terminal with green text.

When using the Kindle app on my phone, I find that a sepia or cream colored background actually has the same sorta "calming" effect on my eyes. Perhaps that's the best middle ground? It's better than walking away from the computer feeling like I just spent eight hours staring at bright lights. It's not so much that I always want a dark background in everything, it's more that I just don't want websites and UI's in general to use the brightest, most solid shade of white they can produce - darkening it even a bit just makes everything that much easier to look at and read.
@believer258: Yeah, whenever I designed something in a class I tried to shy away from harsh coloring. Any sort of dimming helps a lot. I normally run my phone at half or less brightness for this exact reason.

I maybe would be able to accept Your alternative lifestyle, if it only didn't make me sick to my stomach.
Y'all need the magic of f.lux in y'alls life. https://justgetflux.com/
Seriously I've been using it for about a year now and it's great imo. If you let it transition over time you'll hardly ever notice the colour difference. I could be imagining it but it feels like it has made a real difference in terms of eye strain.
I forget about the white version of the site for the longest times and then suddenly come across it for some reason and it bothers me.
Giant Bomb is two words!
"Giant Bomb - it's two words, motherfucker." - Jeff Gerstmann.
I think white on black is horrid (except at night because it's easier on the eyes) because if you stare at it long enough and move to another webpage that's light colored, you start seeing text everywhere that's not there for a couple seconds.
I'm going to say that perhaps those other sites are the problem. :p

Yes I was going to say this to the OP. Highly recommended.
I feel very bad for all of the duders out there that aren't even aware of the black site. Those poor souls.
Yeah the white version of this site is trash.
Black on the other hand, that's a website I'd pay to watch premium content on. It's a classy black.

Man I forgot that the new default is white. The fuck is that about? GiantBomb default is traditionally black. If it's (not) white, it's done.

I prefer the it too.

an abomination of AWESOME
@quid_pro_bono: The problem I have on the site of using the darker background is the text is white, as an IT nerd this is brutal to my eyeballs compared to my sweet sweet terminal (as you mentioned). I've considered a grease monkey script to modify the color settings of the font but have more important side projects to work on.
Edit: Fuck I went in and modified the text to be #859900 and it looks pretty damn good... @jslack who do we have to bribe around here to get the dark color scheme text color changed to a sweet sweet solarized dark match up?

I'm black and I'm proud!

What default white site? The site has always been black ;)
@dudeglove: Yep I use the white design at work and black everywhere else.
