I'm talking about games you had no idea what they were about or even thought they would suck but turned out fantastic and engaging.

Mine has to be Vanquish. I thought it was going to be your typical action shooter made to milk cash while reviews were in the process of being written, but it turned out fantastic. I loved the mechanics of slowing down time while dodging and pwning some robots.

What was the story of that game? The fuck do I know, all I remember was some dude in a suit and a beefy reject from Gears of War, but it was a blast! Now share yours!

Metro 2033. Just finished it, highly atmospheric and fun game. It's a bit short, but given how the price has fallen it's not really a problem.

I'm playing Metro 2033 right now too and it's awesome. Kinda like Condemned meets Stalker. Really surprising how good it is seeing all the not-so-great reviews. Stealth sections are a bit too strict how you have to do them, but youtube helps.

If you're playing on hardcore, I'll give you some important hints:

Two Worlds 2 I guess, though it appears to have offended Giant Bomb's mother or something.

The only game I've bought this year is Magicka, and that kinda sucked.  Srsly nothing new out that I want to play at the moment.

Ghost Trick for the DS is pretty good. Not really a game people thought would suck. More of a game that people didn't even know about.

Yeah, they didn't ever even mentioned the game, I can't understand them sometimes.

Also the only game I can think of is Mount & Blade Warband, not exactly recent but not that old as well, got it last year in a steam sale not expecting much but it ended up being the game I most played in the last 5 years, I just love the damn thing.

What's that about? Did it get a bad review or something?

No, they just ignored it completely, I was really looking forward for a quick look...

Darksiders and Alpha Protocol.

Darksiders I cannot understand why its not more known and AP, well, its fun but lots of silly things.
I mean, if I'm a spy and I have to sneak my way through the game at least make the freaking sneaking animation bearable to look at! T_T

This might not count...but, Final Fantasy 13.  I really expected to hate it based on reviews and popular opinion, but I'm 45 hours in and loving it

@TaliciaDragonsong:
Darksiders was quite unremarkable in my opinion. Good premise, but absolutely boring to move along the game. Slow movement speed, repetitive fighting mechanics and akward progression made the game crappy for me. I haven't played it in over six months.

If portal 2 wasn't coming this year, I'd say ghost trick would have a shot of being best of 2011. It's really really excellent.

This is what I'm playing right now.

Radiant Historia, another game that's coming out for the DS soon looks like it could be quite good as well.

Fallen Earth (...it's an MMO)

I won't lie. That game is the definition of janky, but I'll be damned if I didn't say it didn't make up for it with everything it tries to do differently from the competition.

Singularity, it's much more than just another FPS. Some of the mechanics in the game are pretty cool and the story isn't terrible.

I guess the game I started ready to hate the most and finished loving the most has to be Getting Up. Oh, I'm sorry: Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Over Pressure: The Official Game of the Man: Reloaded.

Infinite Space on DS, I have a hate for jRPGs and a love for everything space, so I was totally unsure how that one would turn out, but I ended up loving it. Taking as a regular game it certainly has its faults, as there is little freedom and the battle system is primitive, but when taken as Visual novel it is really neat (battle system can be exploited to avoid grind) and as far as story goes, it is pretty well done and offers plenty of complexity and goes on for some 50h, which is probably the most I ever spend with a DS game.
