Summer Games Done Quick 2014 Master Thread

Intro

Hello everyone! Coming hot off the heels of Awesome Games Done Quick Earlier this year Summer Games Done Quick is almost upon us! GET HYPE! If you've never heard of Summer Games Done Quick I've got a handy FAQ below I'm going to write up along with links where to watch and where to donate. To limit the clutter this will also serve as the discussion thread for the week for SGDQ as well.

What is SGDQ?

Summer Games Done Quick is a Week long marathon where a group of speedrunners from the Speed Demos Archive community gather together to raise money for charity! The games are played 24/7 there are prizes and incentives like extra games being played for donations. Its also streamed on the internet via Twitch.tv This is the sister event to the January held "Awesome Games Done quick" This January over a million dollars was raised over the course of the week. A MILLION!

What is Speed Demos Archive?

Speed Demos Archive is a group of gamers who have dedicated themselves to speed running games. They help each other find optimal routes give each other advice and basically just discuss and speed run video games! They are an awesome bunch of gamers who have raised a ton of money for great charities!

Where Can I watch?

Well, starting June 22nd you can watch on the Speed Demos Archive Twitch Page. However you have another option! If you want to avoid the twitch chat room and instead chat with some Giantbomb duders you can head over to Explosive Runs. Explosive runs is a site made and curated by mod @chaser324. The site is usually used for community streaming events such as Extra Life. Earlier in the year he was gracious enough to let us use the site to chat and watch AGDQ. And I've already talked to and confirmed that he is cool with letting us use the site again.

Who does this benefit?

This event is going to benefit Doctors Without Borders. A non-profit organization dedicated to providing medical aid to people around the globe. They are neutral and impartial and provide aid to people in need regardless of politics, race or gender. They do awesome work so lets raise a bunch of money for them!

What is being played?

So, a week long gaming event can't be possible without some games! You can see the scheduled list of games being played right here on the Games Done Quick Website. There is still a week until the event starts so there could be some changes. There is also an alternate schedule posted here on Google Docs if you prefer looking at that one.

I'll be sure to have SDA Twitch stream pinned on Explosive Runs well before things get underway.

Thanks for the reminder, finally have finances in good enough condition to donate this year.

So, question to you guys. Do we pool for a donation incentive again? Earlier in the year we got Robo in chrono cross named after The late great Ryan Davis. It would be cool to focus all of our donations again to do something like that. I think we'll know more about the incentives come next week but something to think about.

@demoskinos: If there's something like that, where the GB crowd can leave its mark, then yes, 100%. But if all the donation incentives are things like "kill the animals," then I don't see the point.

@mooseymcman: There might be usually for games with characters that you name they do incentives to name them. And Final Fantasy VI is ending the marathon. So I think good chance there that there is a donation incentive for names.

GDQs have become some of my favorite events of the year

Can never get enough of speedruns. Of course I will be tuning in.

Hype for that Essentia FF6 run and Studio's Warcraft 3 run.

Most notable games have to be Banjo-Tooie and Paper Mario Thousand Year Door. Far as I can tell either they haven't appeared at a AGDQ/SGDQ yet or they did at a point where archiving wasn't what it was now.

I'm donating 200 dollars during Tooie. Looking forward to hearing it read aloud! Putting it towards Metroid Prime 2 because man is that a good run. So much out of bounds. Plus they did Metroid Prime during AGDQ this year and a dev phoned in. Hoping for that to happen again only with the second game this time.

So long as we're posting previous runs I also rewatched the Banjo-Kazooie run from AGDQ. Features a call from Grant Kirkhope in which it is learned that all of Mumbo's voice samples are from him saying "Come and have a go if you think you're hard enough."

@yurimegumi: There are long games every year. It's wonderful that Tooie and TTYD are among them this time.

I never really watch people doing speedruns just by themselves, but I totally effin love these events. Looking forward to spending way too much time watching these in the coming week.

Looking at the incentives, the only one that sticks out immediately that relates to us is an incentive to run Pokemon Snap.

They are doing another one of there? I am done quicked out.

Am I missing something, or is there just not a full list of donation incentives yet?

The donation tracker is getting some updates pushed to it right now, incentives should be up in the next couple of days.

So many hours of good video game related content within only one month. If only I had enough time to watch it all.

@studibro: I've got a not fun question and not sure if you'd be able to answer it but. Given the gross trend of charity gaming stream stuff getting DDOSed in the past year, is there a contingency plan to keep donation sites up and running this year once things get going?

Double checked with the dude who would know about it, we've had issues with this in the past and we've made some preparations. Operation Supply Drop got hit so hard :(

I recently rewatched this Paper Mario run from SGDQ 2013 to prep for this year where Thousand Year Door will be ran. This run has some fantastic bits in it.

Watch it if you have 4 hours before next Sunday and this year's SGDQ starts. It's a great run. Also watch the Banjo-Kazooie run I posted earlier to prep for Banjo-Tooie. It had a call with Grant Kirkhope in it! Really fun!

While I am looking forward to this, I am bummed that this and Mario Marathon are running into each other this year.
