6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Closely missing out on the top 10 would be...
Bioshock
Grand Theft Auto 5
Red Dead Redemption
Heavy Rain
Binary Domain
EDIT: just to say that there is a pool of about 15 that hover below these lists for me... point being that this has been a damn good generation for video games.

Despite it covering an entire generation, I still adhered to the rule of 1 game per franchise to give new IPs a chance.
someone should tally these & make a composite Giantbomb community top 10 games of the generation.
Check the OP, that is exactly what he is doing. Though I think you aren't the only one who missed that and the number of replies are wayyyyyy too little to be anything close to reasonable.
- Mass Effect 2
- Persona 4 Golden
- Minecraft
- Uncharted 2
- Skyrim
- The Walking Dead
- Bioshock Infinite
- Portal
- Batman: Arkham City
- To The Moon
- Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
- Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Fire Emblem: Awakening
- The Last of Us
- The Walking Dead
- Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Ver. 2012
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations
- Bayonetta
- Persona 4 Golden
@fancysoapsman: Damn, you liked Dark Souls so much that you put it on your list twice. I can respect this.
Edit: OP, disregard this when it comes time to tally these. My real answer is below.
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
- Mass Effect
- Minecraft
- Uncharted 2
- Gears of War
- Portal 2
- Demon's Souls
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- The Walking Dead
These aren't a list of my favorite games, but a list of what I think are the objectively most important and influential games of the generation, spanning all genres. There were certain games that were absolutely amazing, and sold extraordinarily well, but they were nothing more than fun diversions (lots of Wii and WiiU games fit into this category), rather than games that played an integral part in the industry's growth. I'd love to hear how people disagree with any of these, provided you aren't too confrontational or emotional. There are about a hundred games I'd put at the number '11' spot, so I'm glad this is limited to 10. I omitted any racing games because I really don't think the genre has progressed much at all in a really long time, excepting some creative online components from Burnout: Paradise. I also don't think either of the two GTA games this generation really took things too far in any direction. They were great games; but if I had to pin a medal to any "GTA-like" game it'd be Red Dead Redemption for its groundbreaking story arc... at spot '11.'
I never even owned CoD 4 or any of the Gears of War games, and didn't particularly love any of them, but its undeniable the influence the former has made to every first-person shooter since. And Gears of War spearheaded a huge advancement in third and first-person games with its cover mechanics (...even if Kill/Switch did do it first). I'd have put Gone Home on my list, but I'm just not sure of the importance of that game in the long run, so soon after its release. The GB community knows enough about games to guess why the rest were put on the list.
@development: I can't do that with my list because I don't want it to be a list of influence but a list of my top 10 but I can definitely see where you are coming from. I even mostly agree with you outside of a couple. Like why Portal 2 instead of 1, Minecraft should be lower, the only one I don't think should be on the list at all is Walking Dead. It did nothing to forward the point and click genre, it plays exactly like every other Telltale game and a ton of other point and clicks do. It only got so much spot light because it was "The Walking Dead", no one gave a damn about Back to the Future and mechanically and artistically they are the same game.
@development: That's a damn good list of influential games from this generation, but voting is always going to come down to emotional investment over objective analysis. That's sorta the fun of it. Still, you earn cred for really thinking about it.
That said, you somehow forgot about MOBAs and their current influence on the industry, which is massive.
It's difficult to sort so many games into a definitive top 10 list, but..
- Super Mario Galaxy
- Minecraft
- Arkham Asylum
- Portal
- The Witcher 2
- inFamous
- Mass Effect
- Borderlands
- Red Dead Redemption
- FTL: Faster Than Light
Here we go: All Xbox 360, except The Walking Dead and Saints Row which were PC
- Halo 3
- Bioshock
- The Walking Dead
- GTA IV
- Skate
- Saints Row: The Third
- Assassins Creed II
- Fable II
- Rock Band: Green Day
- The Bigs 2
This was tough, I really wanted to include Portal, Forza and Far Cry 3 but couldn't cram them in. I really enjoyed The Bigs 2!
I also went ahead and made a list of indie/downloadable games. Incidentally, none of these would get on my main list but the top 3 were close.
- Super Meat Boy
- Trials Evolution
- Limbo
- Bastion
- Puzzle Agent
- Fez
- Braid
- Thomas Was Alone
- Dear Esther
- Little Inferno
- Mass Effect 2
- Red Dead Redemption
- BioShock
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Uncharted 2
- Dead Space 2
- Batman Arkham Asylum
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
- Portal
Some tough names to leave out like Sleeping Dogs, BioShock: Infinite and Saints Row, but I feel pretty good with this.
And I'm like 90% sure the crew is gonna go with ME2 as the best game of this gen as well.
- Team Fortress 2
- Diablo 3
- Borderlands 2
- Skyrim
- Mass Effect 2
- Uncharted 2
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Dark Souls
- Portal 2
- Dragon Age: Origins
Took some thinking, but that's what I came up with. In recent years I've valued games that can just horribly addict me to playing them late into the night. That's pretty much the first four. The rest are games that have left the biggest impression on me over the course of this generation.
- Fallout 3
- Uncharted 2
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Batman Arkham Asylum
- Mass Effect 2
- Infamous
- Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
- Red Dead Redemption
- Skyrim
Honorable mentions; Uncharted 3, GTA IV & V, Yakuza 3 & 4, Sleeping Dogs, Fallout: New Vegas, Football Manager 10 & 14, Borderlands, Assassins Creed 2, NBA 2K10, God of War III, Mass Effect, Batman Arkham City, Saint's Row 2, XCOM and Civ V.
Yeah a lot off honorable mentions. I've yet to play Last of Us but I'm pretty sure it would be in my top 10. I didn't play any Nintendo games this generation since I didn't own a Wii or Wii U, which I now feel is a shame cause I love Mario and Zelda games.
1. The Last of Us
2. Portal 2
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2
4. LBP 2
5. Bioshock
6. Mass Effect 2
7. inFamous
8. Uncharted 3
9. Fallout 3
10. Bayonetta
This was difficult but here they are in descending order.
10. Dead Space
9. Batman: Arkham Asylum
8. Super Mario Galaxy
7. Portal 2
6. Bioshock Infinite
5. Dark Souls
4. Alan Wake
3. Halo 3: ODST
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
1. Mass Effect
Had a look at everything I played this generation (I think) and managed to easily cut it down to 17 titles. The top 4 were easy picks, the next three were hard to place the order on and the final 3 was some hard decisions, in which Uncharted 2 and Burnout Paradise got cut. So here's the list.
- Dark Souls
- Valkyria Chronicles
- Minecraft
- Rock Band
- Mirror's Edge
- Professor Layton & the Curious Village
- Sleeping Dogs
- Motorstorm Pacific Rift
- Where is My Heart?
- Limbo
I'd even recommend the DLC for all these titles (when applicable).
Based on the amount of time played, and fun that was had:
2. BioShock
3. Spelunky
4. Borderlands
9. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
10. GTA V
I'm so sorry Rogue Legacy I wish I could fit you on there too ;_;
Ok, I'm copping out and not doing these in order, but mine are;
- Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare
- Mass Effect 2
- Uncharted 2
- Dark Souls (A game I once sneered at, but have come to utterly adore)
- The Last Of Us
- Bastion
- The Walking Dead
- Red Dead Redemption
- Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
- Saints Row The Third
I really wish this was a top 20 list so I could squeeze some more bangers on there. It's been a pretty fantastic time of games duders, here's hoping it keeps going.
Hmm, this is close to impossible to do but we'll try:
1. Dark Souls
2. The Witcher 2
3. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
4. Starcraft II
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Far Cry 3
7. Terraria
8. Mass Effect 2
9. Bioshock
10. Skyrim
Honorable Mentions:
Tribes: Ascend, Torchlight II, Bastion, FTL, Diablo III, Borderlands 2, Sleepy Dawgs
1. Mass Effect 2
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
3. Bioshock Infinite
4. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
5. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
6. Portal 2
7. Batman: Arkham Asylum
8. Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
9. Rock Band
10. Left 4 Dead
That's my top 10 list. Very interested to see what the consensus is for everyone.
- Witcher 2
- Bayonetta
- Dead Rising
- Saints Row the Third
- Halo Reach
- Red Faction Guerrilla
- Portal 2
- Just Cause 2
- Skyrim
- Mass Effect
Close, but no cigar:
- Tomb Raider (reboot)

- Brutal Legend
Edit: OK, I forgot the Walking Dead. What a great experience.

- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

In no particular order:
- Dota 2
- The Walking Dead
- Dark Souls
- The Last of Us
- Gears of War
- Assassins Creed 2
- 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
- Team Fortress 2
- Left 4 Dead 2
- Shadowrun (the FPS)
Mmmm.
Still thinking about how handle lists like this. Right now I think I'm just going to give 10 points to the first game listed all the way down to 1 point at the end, just as if it was a normal list. The other option is to give every game on the list 5.5 points, but I don't really want fractions in the final tally, though that might make more sense.
I don't want people to feel like their votes weren't counted, but at the same time... I don't know. I have 'til Friday to figure this out.
EDIT: Actually, the 5.5 thing makes more sense, as no order means no order, and I don't want to arbitrarily influence the vote. In the end, it adds up to the same total.
1. Red Dead Redemption
2. Grand Theft Auto V
3. Burnout: Paradise
4. Saints Row the Third
5. Grand Theft Auto 4

Just in case there's a decision to split those up. I get that a true distinction between the two is getting ever more obfuscated, though. (Also, these standings probably change by the day, depending on how I'm feeling. I'm just going to hit "post reply" and try to forget about it rather than keep micromanaging.)
@viking_funeral: You're right, I totally forgot about MOBAs. I guess the original DOTA barely makes the cut, coming into its own (development-wise) close to the 360's launch. I'd probably kick
@karkarov Yeah, I might have been a bit hasty with The Walking Dead. It's bumped off the list now, anyway, with DOTA being added. I actually wrote a long tirade about how influential Minecraft is, but in the interest of everyone I'll enclose it in spoiler tags so you don't have to read it. TL;DR: It deserves its spot.
Minecraft's influence is absolutely undeniable if you have a deal of familiarity with indie games. Games are coming out all the time based very directly off of Minecraft's block-based building system, usually marketing themselves as some kind of off-shoot niche of the Minecraft "genre" (without saying so directly, of course), and these aren't small unheard-of "too indie for you" things; they're popular. Think of something like "Delver," or "Eldritch" and "Space Engineers" (the two games Drew recently showed off). You'll have to trust me or do a little Googling to find all the prominent other examples of this, as I can't just name-drop them all up off-hand. Similar to those close spin-offs and direct clones you have games like Terraria, which by itself has become massively popular and now ostensibly has two "sequels" in production from its original creator and a separate from its lead artist. Then you have to think about how many games have come out with "craft" in the title, leaning heavily on the kind of digging and crafting mechanics propelled by Terraria (and, by extension, Minecraft). There have been many, many of this as well; the Quick-Look Brad recently did of "SteamWorld Dig" comes to mind. Same here: search for these games and you'll find plenty. (I also frequent game dev communities where about 30% of every game showed off is inspired by Minecraft). Then you can also go into how the single game of Minecraft has spawned an enormous zeitgeist in the lives of many all around the world, reaching the hands of elderly and toddlers alike. Even some classrooms have adopted using Minecraft to teach kindergartners cooperation, and I'm sure some kind of geometry or some... thing. I think only Mass Effect and CoD 4 have had consequences within the industry great enough to be placed above Minecraft.
Maybe it should be Portal 1 instead of 2. I forget that what made 1 so popular were the same interesting developments in story that made me add 2 to the list.
@viking_funeral In the interest of your thread, I'll make a more proper list of my favorites that you can add to your final data. Disregard the other!
