Mission Vao from KotOR is pretty useless and annoying, being a skills character in a game that doesn't need many skills.

EDIT: Oh right. Anders in Dragon Age II is the actual worst.

In terms of the character himself I'd agree, but once Bethany is out he's the only healer in the group. I found it almost impossible not to use him. Personally I'd say Merril because she had access to all of the least useful spells and died all the time.

From a gameplay perspective, certainly he's not bad. But he also ruins my two favorite characters from Awakening by being simplified to "Guy that makes you want to sympathise with the mages, except not really because he's a massive prick". I actively avoided using him, and made my game more difficult as a result. Merril is great for at least being the sort of eccentric and kind of batty elf... who also happens to use the single most dangerous kind of magic in that world.

To add in, I feel like Edward from Final Fantasy IV is a given, though he at least is redeemed somewhat in the GBA port where you can bring him along in your final party. If we're going down that series hole though, I feel like there are similarly bad candidates, none of whom I can point out from experience (I guess Gau is pretty lame. Also the three protagonists from FFX2 are clueless idiots, but that's kind of why I love that game)

Vanile from FFXIII was pretty terrible, annoyingly enough with the high pitched voice and just boring character but then they have to make her sound like she's in the middle of a porn whenever she is fighting.

Wakka or whatever his name is from final fantasy 10.

You two, let's go have beers some time. Wakka is irredeemable, just. . . . Just awful.

You guys are alright.

Man, you guys are nuts. Wakka's change from an asshole racist cultist into a respectable gentleman is one of the best things about X and X-2. How can you not love a dude that decides the most effective way to defeat a gigantic ancient evil is to throw a volleyball at it? Plus the fact that he has a weapon that gives him a 100% chance to dodge all physical attacks and then counter-attack.

I know you all meant it personality-wise, but Wakka's overdrive is the best overdrive in the game. His Attack Reels allow you to hit with 99,999 damage 12 times - which is enough to kill a couple of the Dark Aeons in one turn.

@reisz: My impression is that a lot of people are so conditioned to hate religious people that they can't appreciate them being portrayed well. Personally, I always thought that Wakka was very well-portrayed all the way through his eventual disillusionment.

I have to imagine that's the same reason so many people hate Ashley simply on the grounds that she's biased against aliens. Then again, I am too, so what do I know? I rooted for the humans in Avatar and Nausicaa.

Myron from Fallout 2. Completely useless in combat and a goddamn awful human being. He also invented Jet, so blame this asshole if you managed to pick up a nasty addiction in Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

His epilogue was damn satisfying though: He's stabbed to death by a Jet addict.

Aeris. What a fucking waste of XP, and oh way to go bump off the healer, thanks guys.

Ugh. That game.

Final Fantasy 7 distributes experience to every character no matter who you're using, so it's never a waste of experience to use anybody. Also everyone in that game can be a healer, and stats are heavily influenced by the Materia you have equipped. So since you don't lose her materia when she leaves, the worst case scenario is that you are forced to use a character whose like 2 levels lower but has exactly the same spells and very similar stats. Maybe you're talking about her healing limit breaks, but I think these were intentionally made overpowered because they knew they were almost impossible to get in time, and you wouldn't have them for most of the game. Otherwise they would never give the player at will Invincibility, that would make all of the super bosses no fun.

@arbitrarywater: Agreed the story treatment of Anders and Justice in that game were one of the most sour parts of the experience for me. Though I got too frustrated to keep Anders out of my party, because I found the later parts of that game pretty difficult. If there's one thing I feel they need to fix in DA3 it's the restrictions placed upon branching character growth. I would've loved to use Fenris, Merril, and Varric, but that would've meant rocking 4 DPS simply because they didn't give me a whole lot of options. If you want a Tank and a Healer you're basically forced to use Aveline and Anders if you didn't spec Hawke that way.

The 4th slot temporary characters you get in Final Fantasy 2 that sticks with you for all of an hour at a time and is horribly under leveled and is only there for plot purposes / to open one door and die. I really hate those temporary characters.

Also; Edward and Telah from FF4. Edward is completely useless and Telah (for plot purposes) never level's up for S***! Can't stand those guys. There okay characters in there own respect, I love what they do in the story... but they have like zero combat use. Telah is an "okay" caster but his mp limit caps him immediately.

Everyone in the Resident Evil Outbreak games. THEY WALK IN CIRCLES SCREAMING FOR HELP TILL THEY DIE EVEN IF NOTHING IS ATTACKING THEM AND RANDOMLY PICK UP AND MOVE ITEMS YOU NEED! I HATE THEM

As a counter argument, with Dead Rising 2, if you give everyone weapons and have those two particular books that up their skills/speed or whatever, you can basically mow your entire way through the shopping mall and through every single boss. Seriously, if you're having trouble, just find a few survivors and gear them up before a boss fight. Makes for hilarious viewing.

I particularly liked taking those three metal heads you find performing on the stage and sticking em all with their own assault rifle. They have some dumb/funny quips like referencing Spinal Tap, plus they're perfectly timed since they show up close to when that Antoine psychopath boss battle opens up as well.

Penelo in FF12. Her awfulness is only overshadowed by her irrelevance...
