your favorite game of all time? I'm sure somebody has done this before, but I just got the idea and decided to see how diverse your opinions are. Also your favorite game of all time could be a game that came out this generation. My favorite game this generation and of all time is Minecraft. I've probably spent more time with this game than any other game ever, even though I have only had it for a year. The things that have been done in Minecraft astound me, from devices like elevators to creating Columbia from Bioshock Infinite. Thats why Minecraft is my favorite game: I can do whatever I want. If I ever got bored, I could just download a mod or texture pack too.
What is your favorite game that came out this generation and...
This generation would probably be dark souls but as for all time? Not sure if I can answer that right now. I really loved world of warcraft but its hard to say.
These games change all the time, ask me tomorrow and they could be different. Today let's say current generation No More Heroes and all time Super Mario Bros 3.
@Cubidog1: So then the 3DS and Vita are next generation platforms? Alright.
Favorite game this generation:The World Ends With You (or Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney)
Favorite game of all time:Persona 3 FES
Favorite this generation is Uncharted 2. Favorite all time is Ocarina of Time because I'm blinded by nostalgia (not that the game isn't amazing, though).
This gen - dragon age or mass effect
All time- too many to choose, but maybe world of Warcraft or Alien vs predator 2
This generation, my faves would be Valkyria Chronicles, Atelier Rorona, Bayonetta, and SSFIV
All-time would be Xenogears and Final Fantasy VI
Current Gen: That's a toss up between Bastion and GTA IV. I really can't decide between the two. Give it a few years, then I'll be able to sort them out.
All Time: Super Mario 64
Current Gen: Binary Domain
All Time: Persona 4, i guess.
The only 2 current gen consoles, so far, are the 3DS and Vita, and PC doesn't have generations - so I guess my favourite would be Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.
All time: Braid.
This generation: Fallout 3 or Disgaea 2 on PSP
Of all TIme: Damn, don't have one. I have put the most hours into Disgaea 2 on PSP though. I'm just shy of 500 at the moment and I still am working on my ultimate team.
Current generation: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (X360)
All time: Paper Mario (N64).
These are my favorites but they aren't necessarily the best games.
My favorite game of all time would be Metal Gear Solid. It was the first game I've played on the Playstation.
However, for this generation it would be both Heavenly Sword and Enslaved Odyssey to the West. Ninja Theory always has a way to keep the cinematic's so awesome and the story is very compelling. I did not hate a single minute of those games. I should also point out that the music in games is the number one thing to keep me interested in a game. Like that one scene in Final Fantasy X-2 when Yuna was singing that song in the Thunder Plains. Made me cry damn it.
My favorite game of all time, hands down, is Super Metroid. It's the game that solidified my interest in gaming and drew me in like no other game before had.
This generation, though, is a bit trickier. Portal 2 is a great contender. I have no personal complaints about it. It's one of the few shining examples of positively amazing writing and dialogue in games, and the story is top-notch and well-done to boot. Its pacing is perfect, its puzzles are intriguing, and its atmosphere is engaging. But I hesitate to call it my favorite game of this generation. I've only beaten it once and I actually didn't play it all at once. I picked it up every now and then over the course of a few months before actually beating it, so something about it kept me from really wanting to play it for hours on end.
Dead Space 2 is another great contender, but again I'm quite wary of saying it's my favorite of this generation. Its gameplay and presentation are both top-notch and its dialogue is also quite well written. Its storyline, though, left me with more questions than answers and there's no sign of a third game yet. Its atmosphere is pretty good, though it almost completely eschews the horror atmosphere of the first game for a more action-y atmosphere - think the Alien-Aliens progression here. But some parts of the game annoy me and there are some crazy difficulty spikes in the latter half of the game, like they didn't have quite enough time to get it perfectly right.
Call of Duty 4 is also quite a contender. I don't think any other game balances its story and its gameplay so perfectly. Neither ever takes precedence over the other and it serves to make one of the best FPS campaigns of all time. Unfortunately, it's far too short and has less player agency than I would like, so I can't really name it either.
I'm also tempted to say Skyrim, but then I feel that its quests aren't as good as Oblivion's. The game feels less like a world and more like a to-do list at times, especially the Civil War quest which should have been much better. I also find the Companions quest to be downright bad, it never feels involving and just ends. It's then weird when you have many different honorary titles but people still treat you like they did in the beginning of the game.
Halo 3 is pretty far up there, but at least one level sucks pretty badly. Its multiplayer is what kept me coming back to it. In fact, I think I'll just nominate Halo 3. I can name some problems with it but I remember finally putting it down because I got tired of playing it sometime in 2009. And I still bring it out every now and then for old times' sake. Yeah, I'll say it.

Really? In Call Of Duty you walk in a line, shoot walk-a-moles then watch a scripted sequence. It's pretty inferior to Halflife.

Yes, I would say that Call of Duty is pretty inferior to Half-Life. But other than expansion packs (episodes), a Half-Life game didn't come out this gen.
In the meantime, Call of Dutys 2 and 4 are fairly open compared to their successors. They aren't even as open as, say, Halo, but you seem to be looking at CoD4 through MW3's glasses. The formula's the same, but it was much better and more open then. Besides, I do believe that I mentioned the limited player agency in my post, a fact you seem to have missed.
It's a 3-way tie between Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, and Skyrim. I've put way too much time into all of those games.
Runner up would have to be Mass Effect, which I've played through 3 times. For some reason.
All-time is a tough one. But I guess if I had to pick, I'd say Super Metroid.
My all-time favorite game is probably a tie between Morrowind and Majora's Mask.
My favorite from this generation is Mass Effect (trilogy).
