Nothing has replaced Shining Force II yet and I doubt anything ever will. What Shining Force II replaced though I can't remember, maybe Final Fantasy?
When was the last time a new game became your all-time favourite?
i dont put alot of stock into things being my "favorite" but i'll bite.
Skyrim. i've dumped way too many hours into that game and still havent seen everything, and im excited to get back into it with that DLC thats coming out next month.
WoW. It's strange that my favorite game of all time is a game I haven't played in 2 years. I can't go back though because I love it too much. The satisfaction from downing a boss you and 24 other people have worked on for weeks is beyond anything else in gaming for me.

Nothing has topped Diablo 2 for me since I played it when it was still new. Sometimes I doubt anything ever will.
This year's February release of Wargame: European Escalation has become the best real-time strategy game I've ever played, edging just past venerable greats like Homeworld and Total Annihilation. There's so much I love about that game.
Last year's Battlefield 3 is hands down the all-time greatest shooter I've played, though, on its multiplayer merits alone. It's still hands-down the best multiplayer game I've ever played. I guess it's a tossup between these two titles, with Wargame being the most recent and Battlefield taking most of my time.
There are some that have slipped into my nebulous top 10 (Fallout 3, Just Cause 2, Viva Pinata: TiP) but World of Warcraft (2004) was the most recent to become my absolute, all time favourite and still holds that spot.
Earlier this year with The Binding of Isaac. I very rarely add to my list of games I think are all time favourites. I have added about seven or eight new ones during this current generation, including MGS4, Bayonetta and Super Meat Boy.
I think it may have been Fallout New Vegas. It's kind of a tie with Skyrim, but the post apocalyptic setting and the story of New Vegas completely blew my mind. I still have a hard time dealing with the fact that Baldurs Gate 2 Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal still aren't my favorites, though. I was pretty certain that BG2 would be my favorite game forever. Weird thing is I don't really consider myself a big RPG fanatic, but RPG's tend to be my favorite games. I'm hoping Dragon Age 3 will take the spot when it comes out.. Really REALLY loved DA1, hated DA2.. Split the difference and maybe DA3 will become something amazing.
There are many games I absolutely loved, such as Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption.. But if we want something that truly became a favorite, something I call a masterpiece, it's Human Revolution. Crysis before that.
This year actually. Dear Esther and Journey are unforgettable games. I think Fez and the Walking Dead have the chance to become those types of games but I guess I'll have to wait and see. But Dear Esther and Journey offered the most interesting experiences I have had in a really long time.
all time... probably have to go with GTA 3/VC or morrowind. those games when they came out were so much better than others of the time they are forever seared into my brain. i can still remember both of them vividly, very few games from before this recent gen I can do that with.

12 Years ago, when I first encountered the beautiful beast called Deus Ex.
Heh, I saw your avatar and knew you were going to say Deus Ex before I read your post. Also 12 years ago with Deus Ex for me...
Although a couple games that came close were Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Portal 2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
It's really hard to pick favourites. Is Mass Effect better than Baldur's Gate? They are so different games.
Going by what game I have spent the most time in, definitely Dark Age of Camelot. The game itself was fun and challenging, but the greatest part about it was the community it created. Each faction in DAoC had their own home realm which the other factions could never enter. There was also no way to communicate with players from other factions from within the game. This created an awesome feeling of "us vs. them" and inspired realm pride in a way no other game has done before. When the enemy invaded our frontiers and started taking keeps, the realm would respond instantly, grouping up and heading out to defend our goddamn land against the invaders.
I am still waiting for an MMO to recreate what DAoC managed to achieve in those early years. It was released in October of 2001.
2001, maybe 2002.
They haven't made a game better than Tomba! 2, so, that.
Bayonetta and Skyward Sword are the closest modern games have come to upsetting that throne.

Dark Souls is probably the only good game that's ever been released.
At least to my knowledge.
Dark Souls isn't everything, it's the only thing.
All-time favorite? Oh, I don't know. But last year's Mortal Kombat is definitely in my personal top five.
For me nothing has dethroned Rome Total War as my all-time favorite game. It dethroned Super Smash Bros Melee to become my favorite game when it came out.
Modern games closest to beating Rome have been Arkham City, Mortal Kombat and Uncharted 3.
2007: Bioshock.
