I didn't see any other threads about it, but Microsoft has registered the name "Xbox 8". My guess would it be having to do with the launch of Windows 8 later this year. Then again it could mean virtually nothing and just be another name Microsoft locked up.
Xbox 8

But... I've already got an Xbox 360. That's a whole 352 versions ahead of 8...
So thats why we've been getting nothing but sequels

Would you prefer prequels?
I'd prefer original ip's. Please dont make me explain the joke

@SomeDeliCook: Awww man. I was again trying to be as obviously sarcastic as possible, but it internet-failed.
So we double failed?

If Microsoft doesn't use that branding, or at least snatch up the rights...
Except, how do you say that? If it's just "Xbox," there's market confusion.

Nope, I got your joke! That just means I double-failed in the execution of mine.

With what, their own product? Sure, there might be a period of time where everyone would call it "The new Xbox," but after the 360 phases out, everyone will be fine just saying "Xbox."
That's assuming Microsoft does go with this name though. They might just be registering stuff that is possible or interesting to them.

"I bought an Xbox."
"What, that big old black box that plays Halo?"
"No, the new one."
Okay, admittedly that wouldn't last long. Microsoft could totally just call it the "Xbox" again and it would work out, considering the install base of the original console VS the PS2.
With Windows 8 hitting soon, calling the new Xbox 'Xbox 8' could make a frightening amount of sense.

Nope, it's for the eighth Xbox. See, the reason Microsoft repeatedly shot down rumours that they're bringing out a new Xbox this year is because they're actually releasing six of them.
I think a reboot is in order. Microsoft may learn from Apple's recent adaptation of that movement with the iPad - and I think it would work out well. However, there is a lot of market research out there that might contradict that kind of thinking. Playstation "4" vs. the "Xbox" will make it sound obsolete in the eyes of consumers.
This may or not be true, as Nintendo hasn't number their systems yet, but we'll see.

There is a thing I learn with the show Pretender. Eight sideways is the simbol for infinite.
infinite > 360
So there is a good chance that is the codename of the new Xbox. Probably not the final one because chances are Microsoft will still make field research for the final name.
What do they do for the generation after that? Because infinity plus or times any other number just equals infinity.
