Poll Would you play a kojima-less metal gear? (466 votes)

Yes 52%
No 35%
Only if it got the ok from kojima 13%

SO. seeing as longtime metal gear creator and director hideo kojima is out of the picture, would anybody play another metal gear, with a new creative head? Personally, i wouldnt, but if it got kojimas approval (which considering how relations between the company and kojima goes, is highly unlikely), i might change my tune.

A game has to be pretty damn offensive for me to say from the get go "I will not play this".

Basically this. Pinning everything on Kojima dismisses the contribution of the teams that have worked on this series for years. Just because Kojima isn't heading it doesn't mean the whole machine grinds to a halt.

Not specifically because he is not doing it. More so I have reservations about handing it off to another team, and especially if it ends up being a in house Konami team. IF the new dev team is up to the AAA quality that Kojima has set, then Im ok with it. Just think that a rather high bar has been set, and the whole fucking world will rain a hail storm of shit down on them for screwing things up if it goes that way.

Definitely, if the game itself looks good. I see no reason why somebody else couldn't pick up Kojima's torch and make a hell of a good Metal Gear pachinko machine.

At this point that's a more interesting prospect than a Kojima Gear.

Bet you the next Metal Gear game is either a Clash of Clans style base sim or some kind of gambling machine. Even if there was another main line one I'd kind of prefer that story to just be over at this point. That said a Rising style spin-off would be cool but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon.

@jthom252: well that turnout would certainly would be devastating. but im def. down for a MGRR sequel, but as far as big boss/snake goes, that storyline left along with kojima. They are just too much one in the same for anyone to do anything else with that specific storyline and please me, thats how high that bar has been set by kojima. i couldnt see anyone doing anything better/different with it.

Maybe, as long as it doesn't have a Konami logo on the box.

I would if it's a good game. I would not if it's a bad game.

What does Kojima have to do with it?

@officer_falcon: while ill agree that mgs is the sum of an entire team, and not just kojima, you have to figure he's taking alot of people on that team over to his new studio. so you have something similar to the case of halo/destiny, where another new team (primarily new) would be picking up where it was left off but 1. isnt the MG storyline wrapped up already? and 2. Metal Gear's story is one which relies heavly on the story so it would be MUCH harder to give it the same "flare" kojima did. Id say if they chose to make another one, gameplay would have to be the main hook.

That hasn't stopped anyone before. Look at Snake's Revenge, Acid 1/2, Revengence...

Voted no, but then remembered Revengence. If it was something like Platinum and Revengence, then maybe. Though I'm kinda treating the series as "done" now that Kojima is gone.

I'd really like another game in that engine. It played really well. I'd prefer a spin off or a Gaiden vs. another numbered sequel.

I've never really played a Metal Gear game, but even I know that a Kojima less Metal Gear wouldn't be anywhere near the same, or it would be an emulation of his style at best.

That doesn't mean that it would be bad, however, just different.

I would be interested to see it for sure and I wouldn't have a bias against the fact. If it was good it was good.

V was so good in large part because it's gameplay. Wouldn't complain at all to see a rather direct sequel.

Yeah totally. I actually really want that, just to see what it looks like without his involvement.

Not to diminish his achievements but aside from the story and direction parts, I don't know which parts of the actual gameplay come from Kojima and which comes from the other talented individuals who work on those games.

If Konami continues with Metal Gear, it would either be with another MGSV style game or random spin offs like Revengance. Or maybe another remake of MGS1.

If the game is good, sure. If the game is not good, no. They sound like a pretty not great company and the fallout with Kojima and Silent Hills is weird, unfortunate, upsetting, and so on. But I'm not going to feel super duper loyal to him to the point where I won't play any future Metal Gear games because of what Konami is doing.

The only reservation I would probably have would be if they create another cut scene, narrative heavy game, just because who knows how well, interesting, or crazy those stories will turn out.

The way they're supporting MGSV, they're pushing that as the platform. It'll be interesting to see if that game's longevity can carry the online component. The new challenges add to the feedback loop but the online missions are right in your face, along with the FOB stuff.

They're desperate. Those that remain at Konami's game development studio want to stay in work and the company wants to stay in green. It's life support unless they decide to push mobile development. Jack it in and a whole heap are out of work and, in Japan, where are you going to go?

I think people give Kojima WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much credit for being a "genius". Now that the "style" of Metal Gear is set, I think you could actually wind up finding people who make a BETTER Metal Gear, not unlike how taken Jeff was by Platnium's Metal Gear Rising.

I have the utmost respect for Kojima and I love that Metal Gear brings so much joy to so many people.

That being said, I haven't personally enjoyed a Metal Gear game since MGS1, which I still consider to be one of the best and most influential games of all time, 'long side the the original, NES, non-solid, Metal Gear.

Both of those things being said, I don't believe Konami has any teams that could actually make a Metal Gear game that I would like.

All that being said... maybe?

Absolutely, as long as the quality was the same. It's not like Kojima was locked in a room for five years coding every single part of the game and drawing all of the art himself. He had a huge team and even if some of those people leave with him, I'm sure it won't be everyone. That said, given the direction Konami seems to be going, I think licensing out the IP to another studio is more likely than them paying to develop another MGS internally.

Where is the 'they will never makes another real game' choice? I honestly do not thinking we will see another actual games come out in that series. Oh, they might allow/pay some 3rd-rate company to make a cellphone game for them - but that is it.

I would bet $2, that we never see another "full size" home console game ever. (Full size being a story-based 3D game that would take more than 4 hours to finish.)

I agree. They'll support MGS V and that's your lot. Not counting the Pro Evolution Soccer series which is a different scenario entirely.

Yeah, the degree to which the studio behind MGS has dissolved/left Konami and went along with Kojima to his new operation is kind of a big factor in me having little faith in a new MGS game.

I mean, MGSV was the result of that dev team clearly having their budget/target release date pulled out from under them halfway through and told to just ship what they got, lack of original missions and cutscenes be damned. That game has flaws, so I'm not looking forward to the next game, that will probably have even less budget and even less of the people who made prior MGS games.

Curious that you say MGS is influential. What elements of it do you feel are influential? I feel like it's not really very influential at all, except for the fact that some people REALLY love Metal Gear Solid. We got a few lame knockoff games like WinBack, or whatever, but most of them were just me-too attempts that copied nothing from Metal Gear but the idea of a modern super-spy (much of which MGS took from the popular-at-the-same-time Mission Impossible film)

I will be very, very, very curious to see what happens to Kojima in a fresh franchise without the brand name backing. He'll be starting fresh, which is both a good thing and potentially a bad thing. He will be starting fresh with a whole generation of consumers as well.

@bananasfoster: You're telling me you've never played a game that felt like a movie? I love Metal Gear Solid but it started one of the worst trends in gaming.

Of course I would play a Metal Gear game that wasnt directed by Kojima, i've already played 2. (Portable Ops and Revengeance)
