I sort of agree with you, for instance in the first season when Petyr is telling his back story while 2 lesbian prostitutes dry hump. (That sure wasnt in the book) But Theon is a bad example because that's kind of an important part of his character, those scenes are there with him to show you what a complete dirtbag he is.

@ryanrulez: I thought Gregor was The Hound?

EDIT: Ok, Sandor is similar enough. My mistake.

Nope. Gregor = The Mountain and Sandor = The Hound. They're usually mentioned by those names anyway. I used to have trouble with it, too, but Mountain and Hound is all you need to remember.

Yes, it's gratuitous and way over done without much taste. Takes away some from the show imo, and there's not that much room to take away anyway as it is. I'm going through the first season bluray set, and it's just barely keeping me going through them. Do wanna see how everything works out for the Starks.

As other people have already said, just be happy the more violent and disturbing sex scenes from the books haven't appeared in the show.

I think most HBO shows have too much sex. It's not that it bothers me, but I really don't know how to react to a sex scene in a serious drama. It's not supposed to be porn - it has a dwarf in it, for god's sake, or in other shows, the actors are generally not porn-hot. So I'm not supposed to be aroused. But there's not much drama in it either. It's just skin and sweat. Maybe I could admire how well the actors portray sex?

I'd say it's just HBO going for ratings. The books don't play up the incest or just general sexuality as much as the show does. Though, every chapter with that dwarf he's pretty busy having a boner 24/7.

Um what? Have you even read the books? There is far more sex and the incest is much more prevalent.

There's way more sex in the books. There's way more rape. And extremely frank discussion as well. Bunch of TV viewers got all taken aback by Jaime's "the war for Cersei's cunt" which is mild compared to the book.

@Bakumatsu: Lollys Stokeworth is 33 years old. Sansa is 14 and she got almost raped.

@Toxeia: Was it all that graphic in the show? In both book and show I think the full extent of what Bran saw was Cersei bent over and Jaime behind her? No nudity or anything and it lasts like 10 seconds. Maybe it's just viewing "incest" creeps you out more than reading about it.

Unless there was a second scene I don't remember. Which I don't think there was.

Just re-watched the first season and I gotta say it's way more of it there than it has been in the second. Why would you suddenly get a reaction to it now ?

Premium cable shows love to throw out the fuckin' and cursin' because they can. Basically years of blue balls from working on the much more restrictive basic cable channels leave creators feeling like they have to blow their load all at once when they get to the big leagues and have no more restrictions.

I always find scenes of gratuitous sex and violence off putting. It is much better when it's inferred. A storyteller can elude to it in a way that shows off its true nature or intent of the character without shoving it in your face. It's like with Geoffrey: How many times do we have to see that he's a sadist before we can move on to the show just inferring he is? It's not moving his character forward at all. I get really bored seeing scenes with him anymore.

@Brodehouse: You're right sir. When I red the book, got the impression that Lollys was Sansa's age.

You guys are just lucky they aged up all the characters.

If not we'd all be put on FBI watchlists just for watching the show. Dany is fourteen in the books and the author does not let that stop him from including her in explicit sex scenes.

Anyway I watch for the pretty green explosions:

Two episodes into the series and I already feel like there has been too much sex; it feels pandering.

I felt the same thing when I watched the first season (not sure if it's changed). I also thought Boardwalk Empire and The Borgias had the same problem. In all honesty, I'd rather they leave it out all together. I don't really want/need to see it and it rarely serves any purpose (sometimes it's interesting and necessary). Just takes time away from the actual show.

You know what's funny...and I don't think anyone has really thought about it?

Channels like Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, etc were always known for showing skin shows and softcore, and it was considered nothing but trashy.

Now, they decided to make shows of quality with nudity and sex all the time, and they are considered award-winning greatness.

Just an interesting thing...

I kind of think it's too much, there is a lot of sex in the books but they do spend a lot of on screen time with it. But I guess it's for the ratings and it's just a trade off to keep the series popular enough to sustain it for the many seasons to come.

@Bakumatsu: I thought she was younger, also. I think this is due to the fact that they describe her as something of a simpleton in the books? She's not all there and was unmarried still by age 33 so I imagine she had some sort of disability or something that they didn't really diagnose "back then."

no, not really.

sex is part of life. its just something that people do, acting like it cant be part of a story, or a meaningful occurrence is crazy. theres actually very few scenes where its not used to show character development.

perhaps the most "gratuitous" use of sex in the entire series so far was the scene with little finger and the two prostitutes where he's monologueing while they have sex in front of him, sure its pretty gratuitous, its also a pretty important character scene for littlefinger. showing how he uses people and thinks little of them, ect. its a well done scene that the average viewer will see as a gratuitous sex scene.

i think alot of people arent used to the amount of sex and nudity in general. in most shows and movies its pretty brushed over and not really explored, while it is in this show thus it feels overblown when its not really if you think about it.

Nah. The sex in Game of Thrones is part of the story and world the characters live in. Its part of what makes that world.

I wont be so haughty as to suggest its "realistic" or historical based, but it is fairly accurate as in medieval eras sex was everywhere. It wasn't as much a faux pas (sp?) as it is now. The show shows that in a way that doesn't get in the way of the story and is generally serving a purpose (most often character development or scenario setup).

And yes, you are squeamish if the sex in Game of Thrones bothers you. It's more naturally done then most shows or movies that just shoe horn it in just to have a sex scene but serving no other real purpose.

Not at all. It's just sex. They're mature about it, and it's appropriate.
