Most of the revered Giantbombers here like me have already speculated the reason of his dismissal from Gamespot but regardless, there's still no clear answer or fact on why he was.
This is pretty much the official news:
"Gerstmann was dismissed from his position at GameSpot as Editorial Director on November 28, 2007. Immediately after his termination, rumors circulated proclaiming his dismissal was a result of external pressure from Eidos Interactive the publisher of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men which Gerstmann had previously given a Fair rating, which is relatively undesirable, along with critique. This was at a time when Eidos had been putting heavy advertising money into GameSpot, going as far as transforming the entire website to use a Kane & Lynch theme and background instead of the regular GameSpot layout, regardless of which game or page viewers were seeing. Both GameSpot and parent company CNET stated that his dismissal wasunrelated to the negative review, but have never cited any reason why his termination was deserved. Following Gerstmann's termination, several other editors left GameSpot, feeling that they could no longer work for a publication that caved in to advertiser pressure, with scores being "softened", and management going in and deliberately editing the staff's reviews to appease advertisers."
From what I remember, Jeff didn't even comment why. Is he still under some sort of contract stating that even being fired, his not allowed to talk about it or so much as to bad-mouth the company? If so, why don't he just sing about it?
Pondering Gamespots Boot Rendezvousing with Jeff's Ass
" If so, why don't he just sing about it? "Yes, it'll be I'll Stick Around all over again.
Besides, Jeff may not want to talk about it. It may sound odd, but trust me, Kane & Lynch sucks that hard.

Not that he'll go back to Gamespot, but he doesn't need a bad rep as "that guy who talks shit about the companies he leaves." or to unnecessarily make enemies with people in his field. There's no reason for him to harm his business relationships over this.
Considering there's no link and there's a grammatical error, I'm inclined to believe the OP wrote it himself.
Really, if they wouldn't have fired him, don't you think he would have just quit if they changed his review? I think any self-respecting reviewer would leave at that point.

Exactly. It's this kinda thing when people translate your "thinks" to "knows" that piss me off so much.
I'm all for dicussing this as there was no official answer. However opening old wounds only rouses up the people who thought they knew everything then, which they still don't. Alas room for speculation only gives ammo to smug assholes who assume it was some conspiracy and not some more probable and less epic reason. I saw it personally for a full week following the event.
The actual people who put content on the site have not been negatively affected by the circumstances which means the credibility that Jeff represented is still there. That's all I need and care about and why I'm done leaving this issue behind.
That and Jeff's departure giving a personal reason for the others to leave led to the creation of this awesome site. One suit at the top's mistake actually gave us a net gain. I now have two great video game websites that I can go to for information and entertainment.
That's my take anyway.
Gamespot is the Ravenholme of video game sites now. A bunch of fanboy zombies running around forums with no sense of government or law, right or wrong, logic and reasoning.
We don't go back to Gamespot. We don't talk about Gamespot. It hurts too much you see.
" @ThatFrood said:Personally, the "your" in place of a "you're" offends me more. This dude's so important that he doesn't even have time to make proper contractions." @Alphiehyr said:Exactly. Well for one its better to let the past be, and second, i am pretty sure that he is under court order or under agreement with Gamespot that he cant talk about it. But I am sure everyone knows that it was because of the Kane and Lynch thing and Eidos along with 3DO have a track record of trying influence scores and put pressure through advertising. Remember that Batman and Tomb Raider were subject to being alowed early reviews only if the reviewer agreed to an 8.0 score or better. 9.0 or better for Batman I think.
The past is the past, what's done is done, let's just look to the future of Giant Bomb, ok?
If only you guys could've been at that awesome drunken party last year. Jeff told the secret. Or didn't, rather. Well, he made it clear what DIDN'T happen.
Does it really matter? All the stuff we've heard is probably how the whole thing went down. At this point, it's over two years old and all the people responsible for his termination are no longer at CNET or their new CBS overlords, so what's the point of still harping on it? Even if Jeff could talk about it (which he probably can't - grounds of his termination were probably such that he got a very nice severance package in exchange for signing a non-disclose agreement for the true nature of his termination), do you even think he'd want to? It's called being a professional and moving on with your life.
I never really liked Gamespot and only visited it because I thought they did awesome video reviews and I liked Jeff and Alex. Now we have Giant Bomb, which is millions of times better than Gamespot will ever be and is pretty much my second homepage and the only video game site I now visit outside of NeoGAF and checking 1UP every other day or so. Seems like a win to me.
