Who's The Greatest Band Ever?

Best modern(since 2000) band... probably The Red Hot Chili Peppers, consistent, catchy tunes. The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow was also a pretty incredible album.

I find mixing influence with favourite to be a bad idea, for example, COD4 compared to DOOM wipes the freaking floor with it, makes it look like a turd on the pavement, but influentialy ( is that a word?), its defining.

Sorry if that makes no sense, it's 5AM here in England.

Personally I don't think there is one great band.  

I'd like to add that when it comes to the best ever metal band, its a tie between Iron Maiden and Megadeth for me.

The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever.  In my book, that's a given.  Number 2 is a bit more of a head scratcher, though.  I tend to sway toward the Allman Brothers, with the Stones taking up the number 3 spot.

Off the rock charts, though. Billy Eckstine's big band from 1944 to 1945 was the best band ever featuring Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakley, Sarah Vaughan, and Fats Navarro.
