There's a drink called the Flaming Nazi already, right? Someone has to have invented that.
There's a drink called the Flaming Nazi already, right? Someone has to have invented that.

Hey, remember when Gearbox announced that it was working on a new Brothers In Arms game? Albeit one that looked a good deal more cartoonish and gun crazy than previous versions? You'd be forgiven if you didn't, since the first and only trailer for the game debuted last E3 (as in 2011), and Gearbox has gone on to say exactly nothing about the game since then. Given its absence at this year's E3, many assumed that Gearbox had simply quietly shelved the project while focusing on Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines. Turns out that's not true.

Gearbox head Randy Pitchford told CVG in a recent interview that Brothers In Arms: Furious 4 is most definitely in continued development, and "still evolving."

"One of the reasons why we're not talking about it now is that it's evolving and we need to make further changes before we can start talking about it," he said.

The original trailer showed a version of Brothers In Arms that looked like a cross-breeding of Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, and Inglourious Basterds (second reference today!). What, exactly, Furious 4 has evolved into, Pitchford wouldn't say. He was also clear that we won't be hearing anything about Furious 4 for a little while, or at least not until Borderlands 2 ships this September.

But at least you can rest easy knowing the game hasn't disappeared entirely. Assuming you were ever worried about that to begin with.

This seemed cool, but I really hate that they have to stick the Brothers in Arms name in this thing. It just doesn't seem to have anything to do with the franchise. I guess it makes some kind of business sense but it's still a bummer.

This is a company that completely changed the Borderlands art style (for the better!) mid-way through development. Who knows what this game will end up being. I kind of liked the tactical action of the BoA games. It was fun actually using suppressing fire to flank an enemy. I hope there's some form of that in this new game.

@Kaiserreich: Me too, the last one was the most realistic shooter with the best MP to date, fuck this new arcade shit, they need to raise the bar on realism, add more sqaud mechanics like the old ones, have an open world maybe... This one just looks shite.

Still mixed on this BoA. I don't mind spin-offs, but I would definitely like a proper sequel to the series. The ending hinted at the Battle of the Bulge being the setting for the next game.

I'd be open to them creating the original vision of the game, but keep it outside the Brothers in Arms series. I think that would keep both sides happy. Those that love the series don't have this within it's walls, and those that are interested in the game still get the game they were curious about.

@Stinky51012: You played the first two and then liked Hell's Highway? You're probably the first I've heard say this. Hell's Highway was a good game, but as part of a series it's just a train wreck.

@iAmJohn: I honestly never liked any of the Brothers in Arms games. They were neither graphically nor mechanically pleasing. and if storytelling is their selling point, I'd rather watch Saving Private Ryan again.

I think they did a lot right with the story, but in terms of gameplay the whole thing was a step back. I hated the addition of regenerating health and thought it was poorly implemented; you took way too few shots fired your way to get in the red and then it took one goddamn tag to bring you down. It's the complete antithesis of having the health bar, which allowed you to take risks in trying to flank and get the drop on enemies without having to rely on making sure they're completely suppressed. I get what they were going for in trying to translate the suppression mechanic to an effect on the player, but it was just done poorly. And that's not even getting into the overreliance on putting Baker alone with no squad and forcing you to play a mediocre first-person shooter with Brothers in Arms mediocre shooting, or inexplicably getting rid of Situational Awareness View.

It was a complete step in the wrong direction that couldn't decide if it wanted to more emphasize the shooting or more emphasize the strategy. As someone who enjoys shooters, the series still couldn't hang with any of the other World War II shooters out there; as someone who loved Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood, I felt like my strategy options were far more limited and that I was being railroaded into that bad shooting that I did not want to do.

Agreed. Last year when I first saw this new "reimagining" of the Brothers in Arms franchise I said to myself what a stinking pile this new rendition was. Gearbox just let this project die and move on...Your new ideas are not worthy of the Brothers in Arms name.

No kidding. I have been playing Red Orchestra 2 for the past little while and it seems like a totally fresh concept. The whole "slightly futuristic" modern warfare game is more tiring than the WWII shooter ever got.

Marketing realities are things that exist, people. If you're intelligent enough to recognize that a brand label doesn't make it the same type of game, you're intelligent enough to determine whether you want to buy it.

I honestly thought it was a joke when I watched the trailer. I don't know what's more unfortunate -- that something this shitty hasn't been shelved, or the fact that there's actually (probably) a market for it.

This game was revealed way too early. How about you finish that damn Aliens game first so it can be disappointing then move on to this. One of SEGA's "pillars", too funny.

Maybe that strategy game will be good but if it's just a Star Craft style game I doubt it. My dream is for it to be something like X-Com or Jagged Alliance.

Still waiting for an actual sequel to Brother in Arms: Earned in Blood. Hell's Highway was a shit-sucking travesty and Furious 4 has absolutely nothing to do with the gameplay and feel of the first two phenomenal games.

I just want an actual BIA release, personally.

    They promised me snow.

    I want snow. :/

In all honesty, this doesn't seem like it will turn out bad. I just don't like that they are selling it on the BIA name, while ignoring the actual series.
