A Godzilla simulation that just isn't fun to play

Upfront I'm letting everyone know that this game is bad but that doesn't mean it doesn't have things I like about it. The things that make this a bad game also make it a good Godzilla simulator. The main mode in this game is God Of Destruction which is about using Godzilla to rampage throughout Japan fighting other Kaiju along the way. The game is set up like a arcade game with separate destruction zones that can be destroyed in order to grow Godzilla. Other than making him look larger the only thing height does is unlock the final stage if you get him over 100m. As noted before you do fight other Kajiu with a limited move set. Every monster has a similar move set with them having a light combo, heavy attack and two special moves. They also have a roar move which gives you a few moments of invincibility to set up a heavy counter attack.

Evolution mode lets you upgrade all the Kaiju. At this point I had played through the game with Godzilla about 7 times to unlock everything.

The set of monsters that are unlockable in this game span the entire set of Godzilla movies. Between Destroyah or the ever present King Ghidorah you will be able to play any of your favorite monsters from all of the films. Along the way you will also gather evolution points that can be used to upgrade whoever you playing at the moment. Which is unfortunately hindered by the fact you need to collect parts from other monsters by beating them. Since each stage you encounter in the main mode is semi random you might not get the part you need till much latter. Like I didn't get to upgrade Godzilla much till after I played through the main mode 3 times. This game also has a few other modes like King of Kaiju which just makes it a traditional fighting game instead of having to worry about destroying G reactors. The Vs mode is the same thing except it is against other online players.

Some monsters like King Ghidorah obscure the action. Which made me wish the game had a wider camera angle.

Now that I have explained the game it is time to tell you why it isn't a fun video game. First up Godzilla is so slow that it feels like it takes forever to get through a stage. Which fits in perfectly with his movie persona yet as a video game it could become a chore. His moveset is also very small so you'll be doing the same thing for every level. Other than adding a time limit or a different Kaiju to fight every level feels really similar which could also get old fast. The game doesn't seem balanced as a basic fighting game either since monsters like Mothra can corner a CPU Kaiju and do a endless combo on them even if they use their escape move. The reverse can happen to the player when the game decides to throw a 100m monster your way which always feels unfair since they can attack instantly while the player must either fire breath them or use a 3 hit combo to break their guard. Also unless you like replaying the game like me the main mode can easily be finished in a few hours with the only saving grace being that it takes a few more playthroughs to unlock the real ending.

I never knew playing a giant moth would be fun in a game till now.

But even with all those flaws something about it makes me come back for more. Maybe my fandom of the Godzilla movies makes it more fun to play as all the Kaiju I grew up watching on tv. Destroying a entire city is always fun too as noted by the Rampage games. If you a fan of Godzilla it might be easier to look past all the flaws and enjoy it for what it is trying to emulate. But if your coming in as a general video game fan this game will not be fun in any way.
