GUTS by Brazilian developer Flux Game Studio is a bold attempt to change the status quo in its genre. It's been over 25 years since fighting games became a solid, fascinating genre with fans all over the world and great and successful IPs out there. Maybe that is why many popular games usually stick to the winning formulas. Well, GUTS aims to change that in a big way by breaking a few rules and bringing new ideas to the table. So it is still a fighting game - but it surely is not your regular one.
GUTS is all about dismemberment. Players fight to chop off their rivals' limbs with special moves and scenario hazards. And as arms and legs are lost, there's no problem: fight with what you've got! Armless and legless versions of each character keep on brawling with shoulders, headbutts and body slams as their moves change according to whatever they have left.
All of GUTS' mechanics are dismember-oriented - everything was designed to make the game's most unique feature stand out. There is no health bar - one's gotta sever all four limbs and deliver a final blow to win; dynamic audio changes according to how many attached limbs are there on the match; there is no timer, but only some interventions that make everything more deadly; and the passive Underdog Points which are earned only when players lose limbs!
The result is a Tarantino-style funny gore fest where hilarious over the top situations happen all the time. Both novice and experienced players can jump into the action, deliver some combos, unleash GUTS moves, and have a laugh.
