Incredibly addictive and fun... until you hit the wall.

So finally someone has come up with an online equivalent of Magic the Gathering that removes a lot of the unnecessary mental gymnastics while maintaining the strategy of both deck crafting and game play.

Set in the World of Warcraft universe, you take on one of that game's popular character classes, Mage, Rogue, Warrior, Priest, Shaman, etc. and battle it out using minions and spells. The game play is fast (thanks to a built-in turn timer), and of course like all CCGs, you can buy new card packs to give you more options.

That's where the trouble starts. Unlike, say MtG which can put limits on decks (say starter vs. starter only), Hearthstone has no such limits in place. They do allow players to advance without spending money if they are smart and strategic - token 'gold' is awarded based on number of wins. BUT, at least for some character classes, that's only good up to a certain point - once you've leveled into the 20s somewhere you hit the wall, now you're facing other players who've spent money and have very powerful epic level cards that make them practically unbeatable. You still might be able to advance after many, games from people conceding or logging out, but since it takes 2 wins for 10 gold (EDIT: that was a typo, actually it takes 3 wins for 10 gold) and 100 gold to buy a new pack of cards (in which your chance of getting rare epic cards is pretty slim), you might have to play hundreds of games to get past the mid 20s, maybe even 1,000s of games if you're really unlucky and get only packs with cards for other character classes.

Sure, it's a drawback of the pay-for-play system (someone has to pay the game developers, right?), but when faced with spending hundreds of dollars on virtual 'cards' or quitting a hero and grinding a new one, that old monthly WoW subscription doesn't look so bad after all.

First, it's 3 wins for 10 gold. But you get a lot of gold from daily quests and even more from one time quests. If you use your gold to play in the arena, you'll get a pack of cards for every run and if you play smart, the gold you get in the arena plus the gold from daily quests is enough to play arena indefinitely.

Also there are several streamers that have obtained all the card (even for multiple accounts) now without ever spending real money.

@tsuhai: Yes, 3 wins for 10 gold, sorry, '2' was a typo - so yeah, even harder.

The daily quests are usually for a particular class, so if you don't play that class, you are out of luck. For example, I exclusively play Mage, however after nearly 200 games as Mage, the only 'daily' quests/one time quests I'm offered when logging in are things like 'reach X level with Priest' or some other class - no daily quests for Mage.

As to the arena, I wouldn't know - I've never played there, saving my gold for new packs. Maybe I will try it - I didn't know you got a pack for every single arena match, that does change things.

I do know there are those (with 8 hours a day free time) to play constantly and get all the cards, however I am not that kind. Nor do I believe in reading 'cheats', strategy guides and watching youtube tutorials, I believe everyone should learn the game on their own without taking 'hints' from more experienced players, but I realize that's just me - there's a reason why bookstores are filled with strategy guides that IMO take the fun out of gaming.

And who has time for multiple accounts?

    UPDATE:

I have now been grinding for over a year. I have gotten 2 legendaries, one 'Old Murk Eye' only useful if you're running a Murlock deck, and the other, Maexxna from doing the free Naxxramos solo adventure.

Still stuck around rank 20 - it doesn't help that Blizzard insists on 'resetting the ladder' (zeroing out scores) every month.

    UPDATE July 2015:

I STILL have not acquired all the cards for Mage (the class I play) and feel like I'm hitting my head against the wall. Every month the ladder resets and I can climb back to 20 or 19 in ranks then get stuck there. BUT today I played in 'Casual' for the first time. Wow, what a difference, I can kick ass there against people with roughly(?) the same decks... but maybe that's because all the Pay2Win players are busy re-climbing the ladder after a reset. We'll see how that goes. Oh, and I'm only halfway to the amount of dust I need for that legendary card that will hopefully make ranking a LOT easier. Right now the way ranking works is I can beat off 1 Legendary, maybe 2, but once they drop multiple Legendaries, I'm pretty much screwed.

I don't think this game is for you. It's not "pay2win" as you say, it's much more likely that you just are not good enough to get out of the low ranks. If you're really so good that the only thing holding you back is having worse cards, then you should be making piles and piles of gold in the arena since that's an even playing field.

Also, only playing Mage seems like a surefire way to not be very good at the game. Try learning all the other classes.

UPDATE: two years into this and I'm starting to peek into the high teens, but the Whisper of Old Gods release that forces Standard vs. Wild may just set that back - I've converted my mage deck which was capable of taking out any pre-League of Explores deck to standard and that gutted some of it's Goblin-vs.-Gnome power. Afraid it's gonna be a long slog to ever reach Rank 1 with Mage.

The barrier to entry in a trading card game tends to be enormous. Acquiring enough cards to form a deck can be an expensive endeavor, particularly if hoping to play competitively, and as a fresh-faced newbie nervously shuffling a fresh stack of cards, finding a match or group to practice with is an intimidating prospect in itself.Fortunately, the internet has stepped in to save those cards (and you) from sustaining nasty battle scars. With the rising popularity of online card games, more compani...

Hearthstone : An incredibly beautiful boardgame 0

Well i never played any card games before. i don't really like them, but man this game is addictive. i have spent so many hours. As for the the pay to win thing some people say, yeah sure more money = better cards. but i haven't spent any and still doing good. almost got legend too. you must have patience. The one thing i'd like to mention though is how difficult the game has become for newcomers since the release of Naxx and GVG. I think blizzard should do something about this. Besides that, h...
