E3 2013: A Torturous Nine Minutes of Metal Gear Solid V
I think Kiefer sounds perfect as Snake. He's got the right mix of "tough guy" edge to his voice while still sounding like a person. Hayter eventually sounded like a cartoon.
It's not Hayter. It's just not the same. Good for some I guess. I think it sucks.
I'm the same. Metal Gear is my favourite franchise. There's an instant disconnect in my mind, seeing but not hearing Snake.
I'd accept it if they announce Solid/Hayter is in the game. Two different voices make sense. If they've just shit-canned him for the bigger name, i'll pass. My loss.
Kiefer Sutherland's Snake voice is actually good. All you loyalists should have stopped giving a shit about canon and tradition after MGS4 shit the bed with that series, even more so with Peace Walker. Getting a new voice actor is a step forward in wiping the series clean of the shit stain that MGS4 left on the series. This may sound harsh coming from a former die hard fan of the series, but MGS4 was the Mass Effect 3 of the series for me. So they can do whatever the fuck they want with it.
Maybe a tiny bit.
I don't really care about the Metal Gear "fiction", I just like the character and the dumb stuff Kojima does with him. The voice was like 80% of that character for me, it's a huge bummer to hear a generic hollywood voice coming out of that dude's mouth.
Oh fuck! FUCK!!! That made me feel more disgusted than the Saw films. I'm... I'm not even sure that people who played the previous games could stomach that. The MGS series has never had grit like that, has it?
Kojima stated he wants to do just that with this one, pushing the boundaries of what people are willing to do/portray in video games to the point he himself fully expects to "upset" some people with this one. It would be nice if more studios were willing to do the same.

It's less harsh than people dismissing a game based solely off a voice actor. At least I played MGS4 to be able to shit talk it.
Also which character? Solid Snake or Big Boss? They may have been virtually the same in MGS3, but clearly from the dark shit that goes on in this trailer, Big Boss is far from an older Solid Snake. I think Hayter's voice would just undercut whatever emotional drama that Kojima might be trying to make. His Old Snake voice certainly did that in MGS4 as well as Otacon's actor's fake crying over Naomi in MGS4.
Also does someone having a big name make their voice acting automatically generic? Unless we get long segments of Snake talking, I don't think we can fully judge. But going solely off of this trailer, I think he does a great job thus far.
Man, Keifer Sutherland is so much of a better actor than David Hayter it's not even funny. The fact that people are still against the change in casting boggles my mind.
@kevin_cogneto: It's the same debate that happened when the Silent Hill collection came out. Troy Baker is without a doubt a better actor than whoever voiced James when SH2 first came out, but by changing the voice you are changing the character, and what boggles my mind is that people don't get how it's a bummer for some of us.
It's obviously not the end of the world, and for the record I think Phantom Pain looks amazing.

SH2 HD is a remake. Phantom Pain is a sequel. Different things. Recasting in some remaster is retroactively changing the foundation of the character. The other is evolving the character. Big Boss in Metal Gear 1 and Big Boss in MGS3 are the same person, yet at the same time fundamentally different. Phantom Pain looks like he is coming into being as "evil" Big Boss.
I understand people being bummed about it, but going so far as to boycott the game over it? Ridiculous. MGS4 was my tipping point and now I just enjoy the series casually. So to me, it's like seeing people love Mass Effect 3 and then in Mass Effect 4: The Phantom Pain they don't have Jennifer Hale and people go "NOW THAT IS MY TIPPING POINT THIS FRANCHISE HAS BEEN RUINED!" despite the fact that the game looks amazing.
MGS V: Gitmo Simulator 2013
Edit: Also only about the first 3 minutes are new footage, dick move Konami.
@minipato: I loved Mass Effect 3. :D
Anyway, boycotting video games is the stupidest thing regardless of your reason. Also, many people would tell you MGS2 (or Mass Effect 2 for that matter) was the tipping point and that you're kind of crazy to think MGS4 (or ME3) could've been a good game at any point.
Opinions.
I think Kojima has finally accomplished his dream of making his version of James Bond as a video game. This game looks really cool and I think kiefer does an all right job as snake.
@sunjammer: Yeah, all games should be generic and the same. People who dare to be different or non-mainstream should be shot.
Even if they feature child soldiers they still won't allow us to shoot kids. Best just not to feature them at all if they are going to be so immersion breaking
They pulled a birthday present out of her belly! She must have spent so much time hiding it there, way to ruin the surprise Snake.

Well done Kojima! And well done to the minion who had to investigate source footage for what it's like to take out a bomb from someones body whilst they're still alive. FUCK!!!
That scene with the kids holding guns almost as big as they are, is scarily accurate. You have to wonder why the guerrilla forces even use child soldiers - they're not effective at all. Yes, yes, we've all heard the "wonder" stories of 13 year old german kids taking out Russian tanks, but the truth of the matter is that most of those hitler youth soldiers near the end of WWII performed terribly. Children, for the most part, make bad soldiers.Honestly, they'd just be a liability on a battlefield - you couldn't really trust them to do anything right. So why use them? They just take up ammo, take up food, and are virtually useless for any serious assault.

Psychological warfare, mostly. A lot of these kids are sent into battles against their own families/relatives and generally people who would more likely hesitate to open fire on young children. Also, as young as they are, they can be indoctrinated with whatever bogus world-view their new "owners" follow much more effectively. Best case gets you a loyal servant, morally immature, not doubting the atrocities he commits, as long as he's got the approval of his new "father". Worst case? Well cannon-fodder and another "baby-killer" in the ranks of your enemies. :/
Wow, I find myself actually pumped for a metal gear game again. This could end up bad if I get dissapointed. No David Hayter though =/ well, one can hope he returns someday to play the actual solid snake.
They weren't kidding about the oddity of adding that torture into the trailer. And that bomb in that person's abdomen. Just kind of creepy.
Other than those aspects of it, it's still my favorite trailer out of E3. I'm starting to get hyped about this game.
Also what the hell was that an electronic cigar?
Sure looks like it. There are indeed electronic cigars. And they even look similar to what he's using. Check it out.
Hate to say it but welcome to what's going on in the world. People kill puppies. If you're a person with a difficult time killing dogs in games even if they're zombified enemies, well - what are you doing having no problem killing humans?
Take pleasure in it instead.
He did those kids a favor.
And I was going to take one shot for every "waaaaaaa hayter-sama" post but I ran out of scotch..

Just because things are happening in the world doesn't mean people have to be okay with it. I can still feel uncomfortable with depictions of abhorrent things. Isn't that part of the point of having them in the game? If everyone is just jaded and desensitized to what the content is, doesn't that remove the intended impact?
Elements of this make me feel uncomfortable because you're meant to feel uncomfortable. When a horror game makes someone feel scared, it isn't a bad thing which calls for someone to point out that people should get over what scares them because scary things happen all the time. They're scared because they're meant to be scared. And with scenes like these, you feel uncomfortable because you're meant to feel uncomfortable. In a tense situation, the player is meant to feel tense. Some people can just laugh off any scene, but the developer means for there to be that tension as part of the overall experience.
It isn't bad that people recoil at content like this. It's just the intended effect. And if it doesn't hit you, then it didn't achieve what it set out to do. For me personally, parts of the trailer bothered me. And that's alright. Because I came into it with the willingness to be made uncomfortable for the sake of a larger experience.
I love the controversy around this trailer, that shows Kojima hitting the pulse of the current times with some of these topics.
But that trailer is maybe a little bit too spoilerish to me, with all those cast introductions going on or seeing that snake gets an decent robo arm/leg as replacement. Especially after that rather disturbing reveal trailer that's maybe a little bit too much "reveal". I rather don't know stuff like that in advance, as to dive into the game without as little knowledge as possible.
@truthtellah: I noticed as I grow older I've started to recoil a lot more from straight up gore while resonating positively with the emotional aspect of "torture" I suppose. By positively I don't mean I get enjoyment out of watching it of course, but rather that I can get behind that as a concept of making me feel something for these polygons on my screen whereas pure gore and blood is slowly making me turn my head away.

Are we then slowly turning into the nagging parents that back then cried in terror for their children's exposure to violence in media, especially in video games?
Edit: I'd like to add that maybe what they're trying to showcase here is how horrifying and uncomfortable it is to be at the receiving end of these tortures in the name of peace and freedom.
Given what the media has exposed to us regarding wars of this and that, and detention camps, maybe they're attempting to let us empathise us on how horrible those people under those circumstances might be in.
If you take it at face value, sure it's violent. But there might be undertones to it that the creators wish to impart to us. Heck, maybe I'm just reading it all too much from a storytelling/interactive medium.
I always get a chuckle out of how much Giantbomb seems to hate Metal Gear Solid.
I for one and looking forward to MGS5 quite a bit.
Giantbomb who? If you mean the crew they did a very positive spoiler-cast for MGS4.

I called it! Thanks to Kony 2012 and that Invisible Children bullshit it's the year of the child soldier.
Black Ops 2 teased at it but the new Beyond Souls had it and so does the new Metal Gear.

Yes Patrick is the only one who said he didn't like MGS4, and then they all started getting cynical about Metal Gear in recent years for some reason. But Brad stated on the livestream he is back on board MGSV, and I think the rest of the crew will be soon. This looks pretty damn stellar, and also for the moment something I can barely wrap my head around. Kojima plots are always so crazy.
Okay so I know a lot of people are like "OMG KOJIMA U SO CRAY I LOVE THAT CRAZY SHIT YEAH FIRE WHALE!" and they act like the storyline of MGS is absolutely inscrutable, but I've always enjoyed the overarching plot of the MGS series, and I like how it all fits together (even if they have to use some pretty clanky deus ex machinas to tie up all the loose ends), but this game seems like it isn't paying any attention to continuity at all, I mean, its obviously going to be some kind of prequel to the original Metal Gear, but I'm pretty sure Big Boss didn't have a robot hand and fucking horns. Is Kojima throwing out his plot just to have crazy shit going on? I hope not.
