Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Used by protagonists when opening a door that is locked, or just for looking really cool.
Two people test their strength by trying to push the other person's arm to the table. In video games, developers often use control methods to try and make your arm tired.
A party that takes place on a beach.
The concept of moving blocks around to certain areas such as highlighted squares, or switches, or in order to get past a maze.
Bonus levels, rounds, or stages give players a chance to gain extra points, powerups, or lives. Occasionally bonus stages will play completely different than the rest of the game, like as a slot machine or pinball minigame.
A minigame in Mario Super Sluggers where pinball is played, Bowser style!
Button Mashing is a term used to describe gameplay where certain skills can be only realized explicitly through mashing buttons, a reckless player trying to get results or when the game rewards the player(s) who bash buttons the fastest. The latter example is common in Party Games.
Sparks fly as you fight to avoid getting cut into bits!
When the protagonist is pursuing someone or something in an effort to kill or capture.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.
The ability to dodge an attack, making the player untouchable for a brief period.
DS games that feature gameplay elements requiring the player to speak or blow into the handheld's built-in microphone.
A physical confrontation between two opponents without any outside interference.
A form of repeatable side quest, the character gets a job that he usually reports to at a set time. This could be doing deliveries for a shop, making cakes, operating a forklift, or collecting coconuts.
A puzzle where you have to use your surroundings, i.e. "environment" in order to progress.
To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require players to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
Games where the main character acquires a base that grows as certain requirements are met. For example, when characters join the group, bosses are killed or when items are found.
A line that signals the start or the end of the race. Even though it is used for racing, it could mean any type of racing game.
A gaming genre of its own, but also frequently featured as a mini-game in other titles, especially RPGs.
Rings that your character can fly through. Usually used for mini missions and extra playtime (filling)
Games that feature an unexpected change to the core gameplay (not just a minigame).
Golf is a sport in which golf balls are hit with golf clubs in holes on a course. The fewest swings wins.
Taking advantage of computers and machinery as weapons, in solving puzzles, etc. or otherwise changing up gameplay.
Hammer Bros. are a species of Koopa that throw hammers at plumbers.
In some games, either after completing the main game or as part of the game itself, players must replay a harder version of the same level. This is not classified as a different difficulty level, as the levels usually add new mechanics or enemies.
Skating on ice.
The ability of a player to interact with items or geometry in the game world, whether for story or gameplay reasons or simply for immersion.
Take an item and throw it at the enemy.
It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto a building, a platform, or a skull, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game.
